CEA92692-8C9F-40E7-BCDC-FF790DB8A727.jpeg Optus has 5000 drop in seats it can use to bring some fans closer. I sat in the corner at back of lower bowl for the double header at Optus and it was a good view and didn’t feel too distant. Not ideal but the stadium is awsome and if we could get 35k plus to NRL Pirates games I’d be more than happy to have it as our home ground. Nib is great for 15-20k fans but does need another $150mill to sort the rest of it out and get it up to around 25k which is likely more than enough for nrl in Perth.

You can see here the drop in seating

Mentioning NIB reminds me - it's now called HBF Park (the third sports venue in Perth to gain naming rights from the same company). Etihad in Melbourne is now Marvel Stadium too.

Only Etihad as far as I understand, Adelaide and Optus don't roll in at all
Etihad/Marvel theoretically yes, but apparently it destroys the turf so I don't think they've actually used the moveable seats more than a handful of times. Now that the AFL own the joint I would not be surprised to see a future redevelopment revert to permanent fixed seating.

This was often the problem with ANZ when used for cricket and in particular AFL, the sliders had to then be turfed over each time and on occasion there were issues with exposed bolts etc - eventually this sort of thing led to both codes abandoning the venue. The plus side of course being now the middle of ANZ is no longer ripped up each summer to accommodate a cricket pitch and as a result the turf seems to be doing better than in past years.

there were a few occasions last year where I was in awe of the turf at ANZ from the view on TV, makes sense now.

I'm guessing the climate in Melbourne is different (or they have better drop-in pitch tech?) because the centre square at the MCG during winter is rarely an issue.

Probably a good thing the A-League game wasn't at HBF Arena.

Or HBF Stadium for that matter.

Rarely seems to be problem in NZ either, with Eden Park and Wellington both having drop in pitches.

Proves that sponsoring a stadium is actually a decent investment.

10 years on, i still call the SFS "Aussie"...
I'm just disappointed AAMI Park never got a year or two before sponsorship as "Melbourne Rectangular Stadium"

So what is Suncorp called without sponsorship ?

Preger a naming convention that keeps its original name

Eg Sponsor "Stadium name"

I'm fine with stadiums and arenas selling naming rights and names changing over time. What I don't understand is when they change the name of the type of facility it is - for example, NIB Stadium changing to HBF Park or Docklands going from a stadium to a dome and then back to a stadium.

Depends - ABC Grandstand (who cannot mention sponsor names as part of their charter) use the old 'Lang Park', but I don't believe that's the official name anymore (similarly, they use Olympic Stadium when the official name is Stadium Australia for ANZ).

For all major tournaments in recent years where Suncorp has been de-sponsored due to governing body regulations (i.e. FIFA and RLWC), it's been called Brisbane Stadium.
