The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

It’s funny how some names stick and others don’t.

A lot of people, especially younger people who weren’t that familiar with jubilee oval prior to us leaving there, still call it “OKI jubilee” despite that sponsorship ending 10 years ago. WIN Jubilee and UOW Jubilee never took off.

The Sharks home ground is Shark Park or Toyota Stadium to many, despite many other names like Remondis and Southern Cross Group.

Will always be Caltex Field to me.

In the nine seasons since AAMI Park opened there have been 101 regular season NRL games at an average of 14,597 (36.5% of 40,000 - ballpark of “one-third”) . Counting all 114 club games, including finals, there have been just five games in those eight years that have drawn > 27,000. Only one club game has drawn > 29,000. The game did not need a 40,000 seat venue in Melbourne, does not need a 40,000 seat venue in Melbourne and the vast majority of events the game holds in Melbourne would be a poorer fan experience if played in a larger venue with an extra 10,000 seats sitting empty. I really don’t know what else to tell you,

Leigh.
Wrong!
Capacity of AAMI Park is 30K (officially 30,050), not 40 K as you suggest. Capacity was limited by clauses in the agreement between the Vic state government and the developers of the Dockland Stadium (I think they are calling it "Marvel" this week).

Throws major doubt over the rest of your figures. And - given the fact that even half full it is a better place to watch League (or union or soccer) than ANZ or the SCG - I reckon your whole argument is trash.

Endeavour/caltex/shark park/Toyota - I guess it depends on your age and what it was first called when you started following league.

I’ve finally gotten used to Mount Smart Stadium, but it will always be Ericsson Stadium to me.

Other notable mentions include Dairy Farmer’s Stadium, Marathon Stadium, Bruce Stadium.

I respectfully suggest you re-read my preceding two posts and what I was responding to. I did not suggest the ground has a capacity of 40k but argued against an opinion that “AAMI park however should have been built to hold 40k as it is in a major city” rather than the 30k that you correctly point out was ultimately built. I said that if it were built to 40k it would only be one-third full for most games Rugby League plays there. When another member queried where I got the idea that an increased capacity would only be one third full, I demonstrated that the average crowd for regular season games over the last nine years was indeed around one-third of 40k.

Throws major doubt over the rest of your figures. And - given the fact that even half full it is a better place to watch League (or union or soccer) than ANZ or the SCG - I reckon your whole argument is trash.
My figures are drawn from the following...

https://afltables.com/rl/crowds/mrs_vn.html

Feel free to dispute those as you see fit.

Leigh.

Probably because you're looking at the whole nine seasons rather than the last few, where the Storm's membership base and home crowd averages have spiked significantly.
Three successive Grand Final appearances and one Premiership in the “last few” seasons tend to have that effect (an average of 15,678 for 33 regular season games in last three seasons - 39.2% of a hypothetical 40k capacity). But it doesn’t change the fundamental point that if there were 10,000 extra seats at AAMI, they would be 10,000 extra empty seats for nearly every game we play there. Do you or anyone else here truly dispute that 10,000 extra seats that we don’t use and won’t likely need for many years to come can only serve to detract from the atmosphere at the majority of games we play there and thereby actually hamper our efforts to build crowds?

Doesn't seem to hamper 25-40k crowds at Suncorp, so no. Provided it's well designed I don't see an issue.

I'm not advocating for its expansion immediately but I don't see why it wouldn't be in the pipeline in the next decade or two.

On that note - both Kogarah and Woolooware's grounds have name changes going into the 2019 season.

Jubilee Oval is now officially Jubilee Stadium, while Southern Cross Group Stadium has reverted to Shark Park.

You’re comparing greater than 50% full for a monopoly team in a Rugby League stronghold with less than 40% full in a non Rugby League frontier market where we really have to work just to keep patrons coming back, let alone build on that figure. An extra 10,000 empty seats simply won’t help that effort. I’m all for ambition to grow but not ambition founded on the deliberate ignorance and self delusion of our current position and unrealistic expectations for short and medium term growth.

I'm not advocating for its expansion immediately but I don't see why it wouldn't be in the pipeline in the next decade or two.
If the Storm start selling out the existing capacity for regular season games then absolutely, a capacity expansion is justified. But it shouldn’t be on some arbitrary timescale of a decade or two. Nor should it have been built to 40k from day one, as in the original proposition I responded to. It should happen when it is actually needed. We didn’t need the extra capacity when the stadium opened in 2010, still don’t need it nine seasons latter and won’t need it for the foreseeable future. It’d be a waste that can only harm the majority of events we hold there as fan attracting spectacles.

Great post and I was just about to ask the question on stadium name lists. Doesn’t have New Zealand though?

Wow there’s some in there I’d long forgotten about, some I can’t remember at all! Such as..

McGrath Foundation Stadium
Sportingbet stadium
Ausgrid stadium
Malanda Stadium

Like some other posts, I’ll only ever remember certain names for stadiums

Newcastle will always be Marathon Stadium

Kogarah will always be Jubilee oval

Cronulla is Shark Park

Penrith is just Penrith coz nothing else sticks out.

Glad to see some things just can’t be bought - Ie Leichhardt Oval.

Parra Leagues Hotel development has been submitted.
The little house stays!!

Parramatta Leagues Club Hotel

DA on exhibition..

Construction of a 17 storey hotel comprising 209 hotel rooms, one basement level for services,
ancillary uses including a pool, gym, cafe, bars and function room on lower 4 levels.
Pool/Fitness and Wellness Centre.

Vehicular access from Connell Street.

Architecture, Urban Design, Landscape HASSELL

No additional parking is proposed, with parking to be accommodated in the adjoining large carpark, which provides parking for 773 cars.

The 4-star equivalent hotel is intended to be run and managed by the Parramatta Leagues Club (PLC).

However, this will obviously be reviewed over time, and if not the PLC, the entity will report to PLC.

Added NZ now!

McGrath Foundation's naming rights were once-offs for women in league round, I think twice for Penrith and once for Brookvale.

Sportingbet and Ausgrid were both short-lived changes because of parent company buy-outs (Sportingbet bought out Centrebet while Ausgrid took over EnergyAustralia's network in the local area).

Malanda I barely remember but I think it was only for a year or two in the late 90s.

good list mate.

On NQ it got changed to Malanda in 1998. Was kinda weird for us locals because Malanda was the milk Brand for all of NQ but it’s also the name of the small town in the tablelands where most of the milk comes from.

It’d be like having Bega stadium in Wollongong.

Is this off-season over yet?

I’ve finally gotten used to Mount Smart Stadium, but it will always be Ericsson Stadium to me.

Mount Smart was Mount Smart before it was Ericcson- it just happened to have that sponsorship arrangement for a relatively short period that coincided with the Warriors early years (1995-2006). But for the vast majority of its existence since it was opened in 1967 it’s been Mt Smart Stadium.
