I think you’re in the minority tbh.

If the stands on the side have a good rake, they’ll provide good views for both ends of the field.
I’m telling you I was 100% anti sitting behind the posts.
I hated the idea.
Only reason I did it was my mate who I go to games with could get us in a box right behind where we sit.
( long and cunning story to get free beer )
It’s really cool watching the two teams trying to cover holes .
It’s the same perspective as the players.
In my case
When someone like Fifita scores under the posts only metres from where sit it is exciting.
Your not looking at their backs all game.
Anyway
That’s just my opinion

I’m not disputing your story, I’m saying most people prefer the sides. And clubs can therefore charge more for those seats.

It won't leave Sydney!
TBH i'd rather the GF at Bankwest than the SCG. Even tough it only holds 30k, its a purpose built stadium and would look much better on TV. In the grand scheme of things it holds 18k less than the SCG which is a drop in the ocean compared to the 4M that watch on TV, and its only for a couple of years.

I dunno, I think ANZAC Day showed the atmosphere at the SCG is pretty amazing when it's full.

I have developed a slight problem with Bankwest which would feed into this - the capacity is 30,000 exactly. There's a reason grounds are often built to a capacity of 30,050 or 30,100. Because even if you sell all 30,000 tickets, you'll never get a crowd of 30,000 - someone's car will break down on the way to the ground, their kids will be sick, they will have a work emergency, etc.

I'd almost be OK with a GF at Bankwest if it had been built to 30,500 - but we'd be guaranteeing a GF crowd starting with the number '2' which just isn't that great for the game.

I reckon the ends at AAMI are better than the sides. More atmosphere, better rain protection, you can see plays unfold much better and they are half the price. Id never pay $50 to sit on the 20m line again!

NRL's not going to miss out on $5mill of ticket sales.

I think you guys are missing the point, what do *most* people prefer at a Rugby League game? Sides or the end?

At some stadiums it would seem the ends as they are often fuller, this seems especially true at AAMI. Maybe its a GA thing or maybe a price point decider? I dont mind pay premium price to sit between the 40m's but when they want $50 to sit on the 10m or try line they are taking the proverbial.

such parochialism. No wonder the game remains geographically confined.

This is an opportunity for NRL to go into bat for something more for the game though. You can keep the GF if you upgrade Penrith and cronulla, for example. Also wasnt the 25 year GF guarantee based on ANZ getting a full rebuild? Isn't it null and void if it is just a refurb?
Originally yes, but they reaffirmed that agreement when the refurb was announced.

AAMI is the only one I can think of, I think there’s a few things going on here.

Sitting behind the posts is a bigger thing in AFL, and more importantly the price of the sides is quite expensive in Melbourne.

Sitting behind the goals definitely more popular at AAMI, buts yeah that's probably a Victorian/AFL-influenced thing. I used to sit on the sides but then realized the ends are cheaper and usually more packed, meaning a better atmosphere.

I'd say both have pro's and con's. Seeing the defence/attack formations from behind is a pro for behind, as well as being closer for tries at that end. For overall unobstructed viewing the sides are better though

Sydney privilege at play again, I'm afraid.

Yes, we get that the current competition is an outgrowth of the suburban competition.. but there's more to the game than one city.. and the dogged refusal in *some quarters* to widen the elite level's reach is just exasperating.

Here's a chance to do something the AFL never could, and the door is being slammed shut due to political parochialism.

Sitting at the ends of AAMI Park is purely because it's general admission and the cheapest ticket and membership option. I sit in the Eastern stand on the 40 but I've gone to sit with friends in the GA area a few times over the years. It's perfectly fine (provided you're not sitting near the casual, drunken idiot type of fan) and the lower roof arguably leads to a better atmosphere. I prefer where I am, though.

I don't know if sitting on the ends is an 'AFL thing' or not. Despite being from Melbourne I've only ever been to two AFL games in my life - and one of those was at Waverley Park which shows just how long ago it was. If I was going to an AFL game, though, sitting behind the goals certainly wouldn't be my first choice.

It's all to do with GA... there is more behind the posts in AFL because that is where the cheap tickets are as well
