NRL is reportedly demanding compensations for delays to ANZ stadium and having to host the GF in smaller venues. It's asking for $20 million in the form of a chunk of land adjacent to ANZ where it can build a new HQ. The NRL is also again threatening to move the effected GFs if the compensation isn't paid, and apparently some inside he government are calling the request out as extortion

The NRL is reportedly asking for $20 million in compensation from the State Government, over the displacement of two grand finals due to delayed renovations of ANZ Stadium.

As revealed by Cannel 9 the NRL is seeking compensation for the loss of revenue stemming from having to shift the 2021 and 2022 NRL grand finals to the SCG due to delays in the redevelopment of ANZ Stadium in Sydney.

The NRL is demanding $20 million in compensation, but is seeking it in the form of a 99 year lease at Olympic Park, a move that could be used to relocate its Moore Park headquarters.

The NRL could opt to take the games interstate if it is not compensated for it’s losses.

The government spent $1.8-billion upgrading three sporting venues in the lead up to NSW state election this year, including ANZ Stadium, which has become the home of the NRL’s showpiece event.

Nine News State Political reporter Liz Daniels reports some inside the government are comparing the NRL’s move to ‘extortion’.

“The League could take the games interstate, if it’s not compensated for the loss of revenue from holding the extra deciders at the SCG,” Daniels said.

“Some inside the Government have likened the NRL’s moves to extortion after the Coalition already spent $1.8-billion upgrading three venues.”

Can someone please explain these two sentences. No they didn't.

I would prefer if a NRL club with bars and restaurants be built along with the NRL museum on the land.

I understand what the NRL is saying, but f**k, the reason it is being renovated is to become more rectangular sporting friendly! Particularly more NRL friendly! There is a a world class stadium, "best rugby league ground in the world" up in Brisbane, a new stadium out west, and one being built next door to their current headquarters current, so it's not like we have to play at Kograh now. Take the loss and look forward to the future.

Surely there are other ways to build a headquarters without trying to stir up the government. I'm sure if you tell Holden or KFC you'll name the ground KFC National Rugby League Headquarters or versa, they'll agree in a greasy heartbeat.

Really wish we had people who really truly love the sport in control. Yes, profit is important, but surely cater the support of your customers first, and the profit will follow. I've lived in NSW all my life, and a lifelong Roosters supporter, and I'd rather watch the game from Suncorp then SCG. Allianz would be good, but again, we need to cater our QLD fans additionally.

https://www.smh.com.au/national/plan-for-mega-hotel-at-moore-park-stadium-20190718-p528ko.html

The Berejiklian government has received an unsolicited proposal for a mega hotel at the redeveloped Moore Park stadium, just as the $730 million rebuild of Allianz gets under way.

Just don't tell the neighbours, those prickly Centennial Park luvvies whose complaints about local developments even put Jim Molan’s continuous political gripes to shame.

Government sources confirmed to CBD that a proposal had been received — and, it appears, run by some in the powerful Sydney Cricket & Sports Ground Trust.

But it remains unclear who is behind the bid, which has yet to progress to a stage where it must be publicly disclosed, with some within the government and others at the SCG Trust hoping to put the project on the backburner until at least the bulldozers have finished.

Meanwhile, it appears at least one big name had the same idea in the near past.

Accor Asia Pacific boss David Baffsky floated a similar project past the SCG Trust chairman Tony Shepherd and in some form to former premier Mike Baird’s office several years ago.

Could Baffsky, the longtime chair of Gary Weiss’ listed investment outfit Ariadne and a board director at Destination NSW, have decided to come around for another go?

At least a few SCG Trust sources thought it could have been a chance once the stadium policy was finalised, and suggested something of a tetris-style arrangement.

If, the thinking goes, Sports Minister John Sidotiwas to grant the NRL's wish, in the form of a 99-year-lease adjacent to the stadium in Olympic Park for the relocation of its headquarters from Moore Park, that could free up the space needed for a sizeable hotel.

ANZ Stadium unable to host grand final for three years

ANZ Stadium won’t be ready to host a grand final until 2023, prompting the NSW government to attempt to strike a new deal with the NRL to prevent the showpiece event leaving Sydney.

When the NRL and the state government signed a memorandum of understanding to keep the next 25 grand finals in Sydney, it was on the understanding ANZ Stadium would be ready to host deciders from 2021. However, the Herald has learned the earliest the venue will be ready is December of 2022, meaning three consecutive grand finals will now need to be held elsewhere.

As it stands, the 2020 fixture will be held at the SCG, 2021 is up for grabs, while a rebuilt Allianz Stadium should be ready in time to host 2022. However, the reduced capacity of the SCG and Allianz could prompt the NRL to take at least one of those fixtures on the road.

While the NSW government remains hopeful of coming up with an arrangement that keeps all matches in the state, the Herald understands the NRL is keen to go to Suncorp Stadium in 2021. Brisbane recently hosted the inaugural Magic Round and the Queensland government has made no secret of its desire to pinch more premium content.

Given the grand final injects at least $25 million in revenue to the state per year, Queensland is expected to bid aggressively in an attempt to shift it north.

Queensland Rugby League chairman Bruce Hatcher said his state had the support and infrastructure required to make it a memorable event.

“What fascinates me is that we only get one game (in Queensland) every two weeks and we get far bigger crowds than they get in Sydney, so we need to get fair dinkum about it,” Hatcher said.

“You should earn the right for these sort of things and I think Queensland has a good stadium. I’m all for it.”

Like the SCG and Allianz, Suncorp’s capacity is a fraction of that of ANZ Stadium, meaning Rugby League Central will have less corporate boxes and tickets to sell than the game’s traditional home in Homebush Bay. It’s understood the difference in sales could be as high as $10 million per grand final, prompting the NRL to seek up to $20 million in compensation for the two years it hadn’t planned to be displaced.

While there is likely to be a sense of nostalgia about returning to the SCG for the 2020 decider, there is a feeling that anything more than a one-off could be a turn-off for fans. Roosters crowds are down during their temporary move to the SCG, with many supporters complaining about the lack of atmosphere and poor sight lines at a ground that doesn’t cater specifically to rugby league.

The NSW government is hoping to negotiate a new structure of events to keep the games in Sydney as both parties jockey for position. One option the NRL is seeking is compensation in the form of a 99-year lease on a parcel of land worth $20 million at Sydney Olympic Park, a move that would provide it with a new home base. However, it’s understood this isn’t the preferred outcome and several other alternatives are being considered.

The NSW government has already committed $2.2 billion to the redevelopment of Allianz, ANZ and Bankwest Stadiums.

With the new stadium being built for Western United in Melbourne, would it be a good idea to have a Sydney team take a game on the road to the new stadium (upon completion) against the Storm to try and develop the fanbase in Melbourne?

ALLIANZ COST BLOWOUT

The $729 million Allianz Stadium redevelopment is already becoming a political nightmare for the SCG Trust and State government.

The Sunday Telegraph understands the project is not only running behind schedule but also way over budget just a few months after demolition work began.

Instead of opening in the new year of 2022 as planned, we’re told it has been pushed back to June/July which could put in doubt plans to play Origin at the new 45,000 seat venue as planned.

The original $729 million costing has blown out by almost 10 per cent to $800 million.

This will fire up those who campaigned for stadium money to go to schools and hospitals instead.

The work delays are also a major issue for their tenants the Sydney Roosters, Sydney FC and the Waratahs who were desperate to return at the beginning of 2022.
