Why wouldn't you just add 3m to the field to cover yourself..

If NRL were smart they would Chuck $1m at this project.. to make sure of it..

Who knows we might have a western Melbourne team in 30 years..

From their point of view sure, but I don't think the NRL need be bothered that much. I'd argue if there ever was a 2nd Melbourne team they should definitely be playing out of AAMI as well, even if they are 'West Melbourne'.

I dont think there is any way that theycan build that stadium, academy, training fields etc from scratch for $180 million. What capacity? < 8000?

For those who were talking about the concept of a pyrmont / docklands stadium in Sydney, these are the proposed leaks Everton Football Club's new stadium in ironically the Liverpool Docklands in England. The area is hertiage listed, so actually a good concept given what they have to consider.

If other builders tell the govt they can’t get it done for $729m, I wonder if we’re looking at a redesign? This is obviously a sensitive issue for the govt, I could see them reducing the scale or the bells & whistles to get it done on or close to budget.

I can see that too, but imagine the pressure they are under from the SCG Trust!!
Time to build a Parra stadium copy, and spend the extra funds on a decent rectangular stadium at Homebush as our national stadium for all the rectangular sports.

BTW, I wonder what the issue became between Lend Lease and the Govt?

From what I can tell it’s just a costs issue. They don’t see eye to eye on them.

If its a cost problem i cant really see it being radically different for other builders.

LendLease arent some tiny mob in over their heads. They have built lots of significant infrastructure.

Wonder if the design is just way too ambitious to be built for the budgeted price.

The $729 million knock-down and rebuild of the Sydney Football Stadium has been thrown into chaos after the NSW government said construction giant Lendlease would not complete the project.

Sports Minister John Sidoti said Lendlease had not been able to meet the government's requirements to rebuild the stadium on the Moore Park site on budget by 2022.

"The project budget for Sydney Football Stadium is $729 million which includes stage one [demolition] and stage two [reconstruction] works," Mr Sidoti said.

"Lendlease’s stage two offer did not meet the government’s expectations so we are looking for another builder in a competitive market."

The government announced in December 2018 that Lendlease was the "construction contractor" for the entire project.

Stage one, the demolition of the previous stadium, which opened in January 1988, has been mostly completed.

Hopefully they’ll rethink the whole thing and go for something like bankwest instead which would be far more appropriate.

Sydney Football Stadium without a builder as Lendlease loses project

The future of the Sydney Football Stadium project is in doubt, with the NSW Government seeking a new builder as the Moore Park site lies in ruins.

Last year, the Government announced that construction giant Lendlease would both demolish and rebuild the facility.

While Lendlease has successfully demolished the stadium, leaving a giant hole in the ground, the company looks unlikely to finish the project due to a dispute with the Government.

The Government budgeted $729 million for the knock-down and rebuild to be completed by 2022.

But Sports Minister John Sidoti said Lendlease was not able to meet the Government's targets.

"The budget is $729 million … they're our projected costs and we have to meet those," he said.

"We've asked [Lendlease] to sharpen their pencil and they're unable to meet the objectives of the Government."

Mr Sidoti said negotiations were already underway with other construction firms to finish the job.

"There's a lot of competitive tension in the industry at the moment. There's a lot of interest being shown."

It was always going to cost more': Labor
The Sydney Football Stadium project became a major election issue, with Labor refusing to rebuild the stadium, labelling it a "giant vanity project".

Mr Sidoti denied the dispute with Lendlease was a bad look for the Government, having come so early in the project's timeline.

"I believe we're showing leadership here," he said.

"It's the people of New South Wales's money and we have to be prudent."

Labor's sports spokeswoman Linda Voltz said the Government knew the stadium would cost more than the budgeted $729 million.

"The stadium was always going to cost more, we said that from the start, they originally had a billion-dollar price tag on this stadium," she said.

"When the public reacted and said, 'we're sick of this hand-over-fist money being handed out for stadiums', the Government said 'oh that's alright, we'll just make it cheaper'."

But Mr Sidoti said he was confident whichever firm wins the new contract to construct the stadium will deliver it on time and on budget.

"I wouldn't go back to tender if I didn't think we could meet those requirements. I'm very confident we'll meet the budget and those time constraints," he said.

Mr Sidoti said he did not anticipate Lendlease making a revised offer.

"One would think that if Lendlease wasn't able to meet the objectives yesterday they won't be able to meet them today."

In a statement to the ABC, Lendlease said it was pleased to have partnered with Infrastructure NSW on stage one of the stadium redevelopment.

"Building social infrastructure in partnership with Government is a source of pride for Lendlease and we look forward to supporting future projects."
