That's one of the reasons Sydney gets shit crowds. Sydney sports fans need a stadium that is as easy to get to as their lounge room is.
The answer is Hornsby.

I know I'm a bit behind, but that doesn't actually make it easier to get to at all.

If you live on the following train lines you will be required to change trains:
  • T2/T5 - Leppington
  • T6 - Carlingford
  • T8 - Campbelltown/Macarthur
  • T4 - Cronulla/Waterfall
  • T4 - Eastern Suburbs
  • T3 - Liverpool
  • M - Metroline (Rouse Hill)
It's one of the issues when people bring up a central stadium policy like the AFL does in Melbourne. The public transport system doesn't operate in a central location.

The new plans for the $810 million redevelopment of the ANZ Stadium in Sydney Olympic Park have revealed.

The NSW Government today released the plans, which include reducing the stadium’s capacity from 85,500 to 70,000, for public comment.

There will be capacity for a further 20,000 people on the field for concerts.

The plans include changing the playing field from an oval to a rectangular shape.

Seating in the lower and middle sections would be redeveloped so the seating bowl is steeper and gives people a better view of the field, while bringing them closer to the action.

Parts of the northern and southern sections of the roof would be replaced to ensure all seats will be covered and protected from rain, while the eastern and western sections would be extended.

New entrances would be build at the northern and southern facades and new advertising signs provided at both entrances. High-definition video replay screens, LED lighting and other improvements will be included.

Amenities would be upgraded including an expansion of the food and beverage concessions, upgrades to the bathrooms including more female facilities, moving corporate suites from level 3 to level 2, upgrading change rooms to become unisex and a refresh of the member and corporate facilities.

To facilitate the redevelopment, four trees will be removed to establish a temporary construction compound.

NSW Planning Department’s compliance, industry and key sites executive director Anthea Sargeant encouraged people look at the plans and to give feedback online.

“Community consultation is an integral part of the planning process and the applicant will have to respond to the feedback we receive,” Ms Sargeant said.

The public will have until Wednesday, October 23 to comment on the plans.

The redevelopment of Stadium Australia (also known as the ANZ Stadium) has been controversial as it only opened 20 years ago ahead of the 2000 Sydney Olympic and Paralympic Games.

At the time it was the largest Olympic Stadium ever built and the largest stadium in Australia.

The NSW Government has defended the redevelopment and argues that changing the shape of the stadium from oval to rectangle would better accommodate sports like rugby and football, as well as other forms of entertainment.

The redevelopment, along with another proposed knockdown and rebuild of Sydney’s Allianz Stadium in Moore Park, became a key issue during the NSW election early this year.

Initially the Berejiklian Government planned to demolish the ANZ Stadium as part of a $2 billion rebuild plan for both stadiums but following the March 23 poll, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced it would refurbish the venue instead.

I think that's a pretty good result for ANZ considering what was on the table.

The seats that people sit in for 95% of the matches there will be much better suited for league, union and soccer. The remaining seats on the top deck are only sold for 'event' matches anyway and will sell due to people wanting to see grand finals, origins, Socceroos tests, Bledisloes, etc.

If an intimate mode curtain is included to partition off the top tier for Souths and Canterbury home games then I think this is a big win.

All we need to do is sort out the chucklef**k at Moore Park - hopefully with a slightly enlarged Bankwest design - and we'll be in pretty good shape.

I'm underwhelmed.

I'm not a fan of dropping the capacity, but, they're just extending the roof and opening up the entrances on the ends a bit.

Making the seats steeper is good, but how steep in comparison to Parramatta?

14k less capacity. People still gonna get wet. Top tier still gonna be a kilometre away from the field. No led curtain like the original plans for the anz rebuild was gonna have meaning Bulldogs and Souths games are still gonna as devoid of atmosphere as a Gold Coast Suns game.

Over $800,000,000 for that. Brilliant. For a party that brags about being the economic masters of the universe they sure have a knack for not knowing how the fk to use money.

And also, when did the capacity change to 70k? It has gradually decreased from each new ‘concept art’ has been released. Such a regressive, embarrassing, defeatist move.

Spend $800mill to fit less people, outstanding work lol

Souths and bulldogs need to get the frick out of there and move to new allianz and bankwest accordingly.

Reduced capacity to ensure they stay in Melbourne’s shadow.
It’s not just about capacity. Renovating is always more expensive than a rebuild. You just can’t get what you want. For example, it is a killer walk to the top level. Will there be lifts or elevators like at the MCG? Will there be places to eat/drink that are light and bright and you can still see the game?

Lipstick on a pig.

That’s all it is. I’ve sat in the higher eastern tiers for 2 GF’s and an Origin and I’ll never do it again.

There will be areas where you can eat and drink and still watch. The area circled in red is a standing zone.

Actually think this area will look a little odd though.

yep, it will be the ‘seam’ where old and new collide, there’s really no other way to do it if they’re intent on leaving the upper tiers alone.

It might be worse than that. If it was just between level 6 & the rest it’d probably be ok, but it’s quite low down. The tier above the standing area is being moved closer.

Although the literature says the corporate boxes are being moved to level two, that standing area is what I’d describe as level 2.

That "seam" isn't located between the old and new.
Remember only level 6 remains.I think its just an inaccurate render.
Have a look at the cross section below.there is no "plaza" area between the levels.
