The rumour was that the Parramatta Tigers would have adopted Black and Gold. Yes, they would have been based at Parramatta, but they are now anyway. They currently can’t get an orange jersey past the Wests board.

They probably never will either. Post restructuring of the club, Wests will own 90% of the club with the remaining 10% being Balmain.

and Wests...well at least they would have had a geographic identity. They would have been the team for south west Sydney. Canterbury to Bankstown to Liverpool to Campbelltown.

That is not true, they were to be the Parramatta Tigers playing in blue and gold at Parra stadium with Parra's coach. There were even blue and gold Parramatta Tigers caps already made.

ahh fair enough. It was over 20 years ago. I thought they were going to adopt a Richmond tigers type colour scheme.

anyway. Geography made better sense. But then again, so did a Souths/Roosters, Manly/norths and StGeorge/sharks merger...

Nah, there was zero need for the mergers aside from Murdoch’s greed

Parramatta, not Homebush.

I still wonder whether a Wests Bulldogs & Parramatta Tigers outcome would have been better, as was once proposed.

My apologies. This is true. Good to see the Wests Tigers pay homage to the Sydney Tigers to the 1995 and 1996 seasons and returning to Parramatta. They should include a stripe of purple too.

yes, Newtown. ARL were set to shake up Sydney then SL got in the way.

Yeah, if I recall correctly the ARL had some hopes that natural attrition would bring Sydney clubs towards rationalization. I think they were taking a more reactive stance than pro-active.. certainly not the Superleague/NRL model of picking winners and losers (either by Superleague style "Penrith, Cronulla and Canterbury-Bankstown are happy with our terms & want a place, those 3 are our teams", or NRL style "We rank teams on a criteria, everyone under this red-line must merge, die or be relegated").

spot on

super league started in 1997 so anything with west’s or Newton 14 years prior is irrelevant

Not completely. In the early 90s the NSWRL/ARL had discussions about reducing the amount of teams in Sydney and the possibility of mergers. Prior to the 1995 season and the Super League issues, the Roosters had investigated the possibility of mergers with other Sydney clubs before ultimately rejecting the idea.

A merger between the Roosters and Dragons was actually fairly close to occurring prior to the end of 1995 - but I think a lot of that was influenced by the ongoing Super League war by that stage.

NSW government, which ever flavour has failed the taxpayer.

They got it right with Parramatta, but rebuilding 11ks down the road is just shyte planning.

That's like saying because you own a semi trailer you don't need a car.

One of my friends who was a car obsessed St George supporter was pumped for this because it had been speculated that they were going to be the Sydney Dragsters.

Is this about the time that Easts and Canterbury changed their names to Sydney and Sydney City?
