I don't want my local council giving away assets when they already over charge me on rates.

Does the stadium make them any money, or cost them? If not, might not be bad idea to offload a loss making asset and use the money for something better?

Try to ban it. Clearly your goal.

Mining is where you get Applecross.

Hey gig those rocks.

Once the horse is out of the stable, it is hard to get it back in.
Yes thank goodness for stuff in the ground or WA would be a very empty place (even more so than now lol)

Community Assets are always about making money, and gifting one to a professional sporting organisation is not what I'd like to see. In saying that, I would think the council has gifted the club things in the past.

when it only benefits the community to the tune of 2% of revenue you have to question of it makes much difference, crown would pay more Gambling tax to govt than a LC puts into community its sport.

It's a cracking location setting, overlooking the ocean and all that. And the Western Grandstand (taken as one of the old "wings" from Homebush after the Olympics) is great to watch a game from. A development like you suggest would be awesome - but unsure of the economics of it all if the Dragons continue to split games. No other team plays out of there I can recall. Now that the Illawarra Hawks have folded, dont know where that leaves the Entertainment Centre too.

I honestly dont like that the home games are split between Kogarah and Wollongong, but I get why. I'm not in NSW any more but if it was my call.....

Of the home games, I'd play all the "Sydney" teams at Kogarah, and all the interstate teams at Wollongong. Draw the away fans of sydney clubs through the gate at Jubilee.. And a redevelopment like you suggest could help draw interstate fans to the Gong, holiday package etc. And with redevelopment - they desperately need a new leagues club - the existing Steelers club is tiny... can't get the punters in for a pre game meal and beer..

I brought my missus over from Adelaide to a Wollongong game against the Knights in 2018, we stayed at a hotel next to the ground. Was a cracking weekend and well worth the expense. My only beef was getting into the Leagues Club

Back in the early to mid 2000s there were plans to develop the Western Grandstand and incorporate a hotel into the stand so you could actually watch the game from your hotel room but the cost was huge and it got scrapped and a few years later they put in the current western stand which in the end could seat many more people than the original hotel design stand. Mind you now the ground is so much better than when the Steelers debuted there. Even though I haven't seen a game there since the new western stand was built ( i actually havent seen a game there since they put in the Northern stand either) I have been in for a walk around and the view would be fantastic from there.
For the first few years of the Steelers playing their was a dog track running around the ground and the in goals were shortened in the corners, eventually the ground became rectangular and bit by bit it has been upgraded to what it is now. Have never been to the Steelers Club but it does look tiny from the outside.
Across the road from the entertainment centre there is a place called Chickos, some of the best fried chicken I have eaten.

The ground has been updated regularly over the years. In 1992, the Southern Grandstand was built. Around '97, four light towers were erected. In 2003, the Northern Grandstand was constructed and in 2010, the Western grandstand was built.

Such a pity that a full time team is not based there.

i first went there in the late 80’s when my boss, who owned a bottle shop, invited me and my dad to go along as he’d secured a box. Steelers versus Souths. My dad didn’t follow league and I loved the Dragons, but a corporate box... we couldn’t wait..

So we arrive and get ushered to the northern end when presenting our passes.. not the main grandstand, odd...

Turns out the “corporate box” was a port-a-cabin shed on stilts... we had to climb a ladder to get in, and when we did, there were 8 plastic chairs (which must have been nicked from the nearest high school), and that was pretty much it.

The ground has thankfully come a long way since then..

But yes a hotel-type development there would be an absolutely brilliant thing to do. It’s like no other ground in Australia, right by the ocean. Come to think of it, possibly like no other ground in the world.

It has so much potential to be converted into something absolutely gobsmacking. But it would need more games than just half an NRL season to justify.

Lol I remember the tin sheds on stilts at the Northern end . My first trip to the ground was back in 1982 and there was nothing at the southern end besides a small hill and it was so exposed to the southerly weather, Roosters goal kicker that day Ron Giteau had a penalty shot at goal which I swear was from about 55 metres out with the wind behind him, I swear when he kicked it it actually hit the metallic flag on top of the posts at the Northern end.

There you go.

Private ownership is your prefered model.

That is OK.

Why do you think they haven’t had a crowd over 18k (capacity is 23k) since the Western grandstand was built?

Combination of a few factors. Win Stadium only gets four or five games a year. Poor scheduling, eg, last year, Dragons played the Storm without the origin players on a Thursday night. And another factor, since Bennett left in 2011, the Dragons have been rubbish under Steve Price and McGregor. Only won one finals game.

Any locals got an opinion on this location ? Only been to Liverpool once a long time ago, its land owned by Canterbury could potentially be site of new stadium for Bulldogs & Wests Tigers. About 5 mins from Liverpool station.

The whole corner encompassing Hoxton Park Rd Hume Hwy and Memorial Ave could be redone as stadium for footy soccer etc with Whitlam redone for swimming basketball netball.

Looks like a great site and being so close to the train line would suit both Dogs and Tigers supporters perfectly. These are the types of locations the NRL should be seeking to build stadiums at. Were the people are and even more importantly, right by a train station. If they get that right then the stadiums should be a success.
