City of Sydney issues warning on stadium demolition consent
The City of Sydney Council is concerned that the state government will start demolition of Allianz Stadium at Moore Park prior to satisfying conditions necessary for doing so.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore has written to Planning Minister Anthony Roberts, and council chief executive Monica Barrone has written to Planning Secretary Carolyn McNally, both raising concerns the state government has failed to follow requirements set by the Department of Planning for demolition.
For instance, Cr Moore said her council had not received a copy of a pre-construction dilapidation report, which it was required to receive under Mr Roberts’ planning consent.
“This is an important report that ensures suitable arrangements for access to, diversion, protection and support for any affected infrastructure near the site,” Cr Moore’s letter says.
Cr Moore’s letter says the Lord Mayor had been told that major demolition work was planned to start on Wednesday, January 30.
“Clearly, not enough preparation work has been done and I am concerned these matters will be waved through without proper assessment in order to meet the developer’s timeframe,” the letter says.
“Demolition should not be allowed to proceed until these plans are acceptable.
"It’s appalling for the stadium redevelopment to play by a different set of rules and standards from other developers, and I call on you to delay the start of demolition work at the stadium until all conditions of consent have been met, and met properly.”
A new $730 million stadium at the site is planned to be built with taxpayers’ money by government agency Infrastructure NSW. The Sydney Cricket & Sports Ground Trust will own and run the stadium.
After Mr Roberts granted planning consent late last year, the state government immediately signed a demolition and construction contract with Lendlease.
Asked about the City of Sydney's concerns, a spokeswoman for Infrastructure NSW said: "Work will commence when relevant conditions of consent have been satisfied."
