The Dragons training base is in Wollongong. Most of the players live there.

You could see a scenario in the next twenty years as the population of the South Coast swells with people looking to get out of the cities for cost of living where the Dragons take more than half their games to WIN Stadium. IMO that's one of the grounds we need to be trying to get money aimed at, of the regional grounds that see regular use it's the worst now that Townsville's got a new ground.

I know he's throwing the figure of four stadiums out there to begin the negotiation high but we wouldn't need that. We probably only need one in the south-west and one in the south.

Roosters - SFS
Eels / Souths - Bankwest (Souths already play just 15 mins away at ANZ, it's not a huge shift)
Tigers / Dogs - Bankwest copy and paste built at Liverpool
Sharks / Dragons - Bankwest copy and paste built in the south

That leaves Manly and Penrith who are unlikely to get their current grounds upgraded as they are single tennant grounds.

Manly probably need to move to the SFS if they are going to keep up in the NRL, especially if the other teams do end up playing out of Bankwest replicas, they just won't have the revenue to stay competitive. If they don't have either enough fans outside of the Manly area or committed enough fans to travel 30 mins to the state-of-the-art Allianz Stadium then they probably don't have a place in the NRL moving forward. Both the Swans and Waratahs successfully engage fans from the North and get them to come to Moore Park for games.

As @T-Boon has said a few times, Penrith's best chance of an upgrade is to attract women's sporting teams there and get them to commit to it being their home ground. The Australian Women's soccer team would be one candidate and the ARLC could help the cause by making it the Sydney home of women's State of Origin, the home of the Jillaroos and can even use it to host Pacific Tests held in Sydney in the future.

Yep pretty much sums up what is needed. Penrith can be upgraded a stand at a time like Newcastle or Perth when opportunity arises. Manly no idea, they need a new stadium but cant justify it so who knows what their future is. Its a shame the Council didnt support the development idea, probably the best chance they have of redeveloping the ground.

If NRL ends up with two 25k stadiums for those 4 clubs then it will be a big step up for the game in Sydney and much better outcome than a refurbed ANZ.

They could sell rest of land off or use shark park for reserve grade etc. put on a couple of dozen coaches to and from leagues club on game day and doesn’t have to cost them on LC takings either.

Or, now that the NRL has stopped trying to copy the AFL and is embracing local stadiums, could you do a complete 180 and spend any cash fixing up existing stadiums. Upgrade lighting, amenities, add a few seats, put a roof over the outer sides. Maybe bring capacity down to around 18k. Spend $50m - $80m on each of Belmore, Liechart, Campbelltown, Woolongong, Penrith and Manly.

Campbelltown would be favoured to get an upgrade with Macarthur FC coming in. Plus the Wests Tigers, in the long term, should be at Campbelltown full time.

Perth Red, I am not so sure. As an AFL fan you would be aware that the most profitable stadium in the AFL states for a small/medium crowd of 25k is at Geelong - the smallest stadium and one that is a mix of old and new. They make more $$$ there with 25k than Collingwood do with 50k @ MCG because of supply and demand, lower operating costs, etc. There is no reason that NRL clubs could not achieve the same outcomes with sellout crowds of 15k - 18k each week at their home grounds. Add in a couple of blockbusters for each club at the larger stadiums, and overall crowds and profitability could increase.

With the ANZ stadium plans scrapped, NRL's plan b is for four boutique stadiums to be built. From the NRL's side of things, they have a requested a high number (4) of grounds to be upgraded publicly.

It is unlikely that the state government will agree to fund four venues, however I reckon privately the NRL will be happy to get one or two across the line.

It will be toing and froing, back and forth between PVL and Gladys and see if they can work some form of compromise.

If so a 30k BankWest stadium would be ideal. Could host Tigers, Dogs & Souths.

I can’t see the Sharks wanting to move away from Shark Park, especially with the upgrades and money being spent there. so to me a better solution would be to build a 20k stadium at Wollongong. The Dragons then should take 6+ games there a year and really make it home. Also would boost the chances of the Wollongong Wolves getting a shot at the A League, would be perfect size for them.

Manly desperately need a new ground. A 20k-22k would probably be ideal, at Brookvale.

Panthers stadium needs an upgrade. I can see the Panthers really getting bigger over time, so a 22k-25k seat stadium would be good.

No, not at all, it is a members club. Will be a 23-25K unique stadium with quality corporate facilities and the leagues club attached.

We would have been renting a council ground, not sure who is paying for grounds right now.

I am not sure what Georges River Council plan is for Kogarah, but NSW Government owns Woollongong, so it will be looked after, same as Newcastle, SFS (which will be awesome when done)

I would like to see Penrith City Council sell thier stadium to the Panthers Group (as a members club) for $1.

Hard to sell Brookie to a private owner.

I would be in favour of selling Olympic Stadium to a developer to build 100 story residential towers and use that money to build a shinny new stadium next to Liverpool Train station.

Saying things publicly is all part of a negotiation tactic. Nine went public by 'threatening to walk away from the game.' In the end, Nine got their discounts for the remainder of their contract. Privately, they probably would've been happy if the NRL didn't return this year.

As for V'Landys, if he can get funding for at least half of the venues, then that will be a good result for the game. If he gets nothing in return, then critics will question his negotiation skills, especially on the back of giving Fox an extension.

I will always support a Perth team.

But there is no members club, people forget how much they support junior leagues and just sport in general in thier local community.

Private owners do not.
