I don’t think so. For me it just has to be in civic - it would have such a vibe there, much like what Brisbane has with Suncorp and Caxton st/ Paddington.

Some smart person needs to present a sports tourist argument to the Govt. Stadiums in city centre are going to attract sports tourism a lot more than ones on the outskirts. Its a no brainer really.

What's Exhibition park? it looks well north of Civic. Is it any better than its current location?
It’s next to the racetrack, where they hold the show and other exhibitions (hence the name).

Aside from the fact that it’s better connected to public transport, it’s a worse location than Bruce.

The problem with Civic is that there isn’t space for a stadium big enough anymore.

Even after they realign Parkes way the Civic Pool location will only just squeeze in a 25k stadium, when really the city needs 30k minimum.

Parking is another issue that everybody is forgetting/ignoring. The current plan is just to use the pre-existing parking when there isn’t enough parking in civic as it is let alone once you add the stadium. So really they need to find room for a multi-storey car park as well, otherwise you’ll make the city a nightmare every time a game is on.

Ah yes fair enough, re parking. Suncorp in Brisbane has no parking but it is also walking distance from two major train stations and has a pretty amazing under stadium bus arrangement

Where as in Canberra there are no trains, the light rail is a joke that will never reach large parts of the city, and though they aren’t as bad on game day the buses are notoriously crap especially if you live in certain parts of the city.

Basically public transport in Canberra is a joke.

they should have the stadium built next to parliament house so women just have one general area they know to stay away from.

So subjective but I think 1-2km would be about it. I guess it largely depends on what is between the two destinations. Roma St to Suncorp is 1.3km but it is a pretty good walk as you head through the “barracks” and down Caxton st. Plenty of places to have a beer or grab a feed. If the walk is trash let’s drop it to less than a km.

Agreed. The walk from Parra train station to the stadium must be 1.5kms. The first 700ms are good because they are in town and past food joints. The second 800ms is a drag because it is through nothing.

If the ACT Govt is serious, the stadium in Civic is a no brainer, even if it costs a bit more.
The benefit to the CBD and local business is clearly obvious.
I can't believe the Exhibition grounds are even being considered.
The old Parramatta stadium was a boom for the Parra CBD. The new Bankwest has been even better. Eat street thrives on both Parra and Wanderers game days. It will be even better once the light rail is complete and current developments like Parra Town Square, more Meriton Towers, hotels and tall apartment buildings are completed. The walk to the stadium, even from Parramatta Station isn't really that bad.

Compare this to a stadium at the Exhibition Grounds - out in the middle of nowhere. It would be a f**king stupid decision to build it out there.

Regarding parking there are easy solutions. Run free “Raiders busses” from places with lots of parking, like Woden/Belconnen/Tuggeranong/Gunghalin.

yeh you just need a park and ride scheme
If it’s in middle of city crowds will be spread out as people head in earlier and leave later

We can keep saying it 'has to be Civic' all we like, but the Civic pool site can't fit anything bigger than 25k.

If we build a 25k stadium the NRL still won't allow Canberra to host prelims, it'll be too small to regularly host internationals or events in any of the sports, and the city will out grow it in a decade or two meaning we'll have just built it and we'll be talking about a new one.

It has to be 30k minimum, preferably a little bit larger than that, otherwise it'll be money pissed up against a wall. So if the space can't be found for a 30k stadium in Civic then we'll have to look elsewhere.

They already do that for both the Raiders and Brumbies, and only a relatively tiny amount of people use them. The reality is the quality of the bus service in Canberra would have to increase significantly otherwise the majority of people will just continue to refuse to use it as they do now.

And even with the buses in Canberra and Queanbeyan that still leaves all the people coming from the surrounding regions for the game pouring into the City without enough car parking as it is, so you still haven't fixed the problem.

Besides, if they build the stadium at the Civic pool site there's the perfect spot for a reasonably big multi-storey car park across Coranderrk street in the car park in front of the CIT.

I don't know who owns that land and if the government would have to buy the lease back or whatever, but if you built one there with a foot bridge over to the stadium it would be perfect.

Two of the raiders clubs, one in Weston, and the other in west Belconnen don’t even offer buses, extremely poorly run by the raiders. But they do have a lot of poker machines in there, their thinking is why do you need to leave the club at all?
