I saw today a list of venues to be build/upgraded, majority were existing venues as expected but one listed Ipswich Stadium as existing, that could only be the North Ipswich Reserve where the Jets play
Nope Brighton Homes Arena, it’s the new $70mill afl ground being constructed for the lions aflw team and lions training base.

I drove past it last weekend, it must be due to open in 2032. Not much done since I was last out there 6 months ago

Surely the QLD government will find a way to benefit Suncorp as much as possible. I’d be shocked if they let the Gabba become the glory stadia of the city. Suncorp is treasured to most brisbane folk, much like the MCG is to victorians. The Gabba is just that cake tin to the south.

Had friends from Brisbane texting me last night saying your room is reserved for your Olympic visit in 2032, i texted back saying your house may need to be modified by then to accommodate my walking frame seeing it is still 11 years away, lol.

On another note Sydney was a fabulous place to be for the 2000 Olympics, the city was abuzz and everyone was nice to each other, was so proud of my city, i wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else at the time.
Agree the Olympics in Sydney was amazing. It was probably the pinnacle of them all. The Olympics have however fallen a long way since then. It no longer has the lure it once did. The fact that a city like Brisbane can win unopposed says a lot about the current status of the Olympics.

Its become far too bloated for its own good meaning hosting costs have blown through the roof. I mean come on skateboarding?? Hopefully Brisbane is done on a shoe string and the events get pulled right back opening it up for other smaller cities around the world to bid. There's no need for events that already have a massive tournament like soccer, golf, tennis etc.
I missed Sydney but will certainly be aiming to head to Brisbane to catch some of it.

When I was in London for the 2012 games the speakers at the tube were begging London locals to stay around for the games and get involved.

In a COVID free world these games would have been a cracker. I feel that Paris will be good and LA might bring the ‘magic’ back to the games. True American style. If this is the case, coming in and swooping 2032 with better than usual funding from the IOC will be remembered as a good idea.

Still don’t get why they didn’t develop the eastern side instead of the North/South ends given most punters prefer sitting along the sidelines.

I actually like that they have developed the ends. The sides of grounds always fill up more and look decent when there is a good crowd. But the ends stay sparse of virtually empty. At least now when games are on the ground will look and feel like a mini stadium as opposed to a shithole park.

I would have liked to see one continuous grandstand along the western side instead of the hotchpotch of stands they have along there at the moment. The COE will look good at the northern end and would be happy to keep the hill on the eastern side providing they have an full bells and whistles grandstand along the western side.

I always liked sitting in the stand at the Pittwater Rd end behind the in goal when it was included in the GA into the ground, gave you a nice elevated view of the field.

THE event experience at Stadium Australia will be transformed by the installation of the world’s longest straight-run stadium video screen as part of more than $10 million of fan-focused digital upgrades throughout the venue.

Work on the Great Southern Screen will commence after NRL Grand Final Day and it will be in place for the start of the 2022 footy season and well ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

NSW Minister for Sport, the Hon. Natalie Ward MLC, said the project would create much-needed construction jobs in Western Sydney later this year.

“I can’t wait to switch on the Great Southern Screen at Stadium Australia next year for the 2022 NRL season,” Minister Ward said.

“This project will create much-needed construction jobs in Western Sydney and, when it goes live, an unmatched experience for NSW sporting fans.

“The NSW Government is continuing to invest in Sydney’s mega-event venue and home of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup to ensure it delivers the ultimate live experience for the people of NSW.”

At 120m long and 10m high, the Great Southern Screen will stretch across the entire Athletic Centre end of Stadium Australia. It will be the equivalent of the length of the football field.

The Stadium Australia capacity will remain above 80,000 for the biggest sporting events like NRL Grand Final, State of Origin, Bledisloe Cup, the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final and football internationals.

Government agency Venues NSW, which oversees the State’s major stadiums including Stadium Australia, confirmed that Daktronics Australia had been selected to install new video screens at Stadium Australia after a tender process.

Daktronics Australia Region Manager Blair Robertson said: “Having spent more than 15 years servicing large sport venues globally and with over 50 sport installations throughout Australia and New Zealand, the sheer scale and impact of the Great Southern Screen installation at Stadium Australia will undoubtedly be the most exciting to date.

“The 1200sq/m high-definition video display will entertain and amaze fans . . . it will generate a live game-day experience that has never been experienced in Australia.”

Populous, a global architectural design firm specialising in creating environments and venues that draw communities and people together, has planned the integration of the new video display at Stadium Australia.

Populous Senior Principal Al Baxter said this was a great example of enhancing the event experience and adding flexibility for the event operators at the same time.

“The positioning and functionality of this enormous high-definition screen will create a major impact on fans. Whether it’s watching the finals of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, State of Origin, a Guns N’ Roses concert or for something like the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, every person in the Stadium will be immersed in live feeds, replays, split-screen programming or social media chats.

“Adding the Great Southern Screen seamlessly into the stands takes the view from a 200sq/m screen to a monumental 1200sq/m, creating opportunities for greater event branding, spectator engagement and potential revenue for the stadium hirers.”

In Australia, the biggest high-definition sports video screen currently in operation is at Eagle Farm Racecourse (43.89m x 10.97m), so the Stadium Australia screen will be roughly three times bigger than the next largest video screen in the country.

It will be the longest high-definition straight-run stadium video display anywhere in the world.

Fans at the game will at last be able to see the game.

Seems pretty dumb to develop behind the sticks when the best viewing area still resembles the local park!
because as mentioned it's their COE that's being built, the extra stadium seats is just an added bonus.

They'll lobby for new stands on the other sides next.
