Of course. Having a Hill each side that holds 3k and costs almost nothing helps. These regional venue that might a game a year can put up with old school facilities. Once people see the new SFS, they might not.
The new stadiums in Cairns and Rockhampton will have 4 grandstands

Building a basic stand that holds 4k with little or no roof cover is quite different to building one that holds 12k with a full roof. the per seat cost goes up the bigger the stand. Throw in corporate facilities and the cost goes up massively.

PLANS MOVE FORWARD FOR RECTANGULAR STADIA IN CAIRNS AND ROCKHAMPTON

Plans move forward for rectangular stadia in Cairns and Rockhampton

AUGUST 20, 2021
SPORT / VENUES
Options for a new rectangular stadium in Cairns have been revealed while, with the city set to host NRL games from this weekend, plans for venue expansion in Rockhampton remain confused.
Long held plans for a new rectangular stadium in Cairns have this week seen three locations - Barlow Park, the Cairns Showground or a site next to the Cairns Convention Centre - flagged as potential locations.
As reported by The Cairns Post, Federal MP for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch has touted land owned by the Gasparin Group beside the Cairns Convention Centre as the site for a new stadium, with parking facilities to be shared with the Convention Centre and other locations around the city.
Another site is the Cairns Showground, although the Cairns Regional Council is reported to no be keen on relocating the Cairns Show, while developing the Barlow Park site would require finding a new home for athletics in the city.
Enterprise North Executive Manager Kevin Byrne is leading a group trying to drum up support for a stadium in Cairns and plans to launch a social media campaign in October.
Commenting on the need, Byrne stated “there is an undeniable fact staring at us and that is we are very poorly served with the absence of a suitable stadium for rectangular sports with the requisite capacity and facilities currently which sees the NRL not even programming NRL trial games here let alone premiership fixtures.
“Mackay were awarded two last weekend and Rockhampton and Bundaberg have prospered also as part of the NRL bubble in recent weeks.
“(And) there will be oodles of opportunities in the years ahead for rectangular sports.”
Enterprise North and the Northern Frontier Foundation have released a new plan on how to create a 20,000-seat rectangular stadium at Barlow Park in Cairns, as well as other major sporting and associated infrastructure including fields, courts, extensive parking and athletics tracks.
Such a venue has been estimated as having a budget in excess of $120 million.
In January this year, Australasian Leisure Management covered separate planes by AFL Cairns for ongoing upgrades to the city’s Cazalys Stadium.
Cairns’ major sporting venue is set to receive significant upgrades worth hundreds of thousands of
NRL in Rockhampton
As of this weekend, the NRL’s Queensland hub will see Rockhampton’s Browne Park host games from both Round 23 and Round 24 of the Telstra Premiership.
The Round 23 game between Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks and Wests Tigers will be held on Saturday 21st August, with the Round 24 game between St George Illawarra Dragons and North Queensland Cowboys to be held on Saturday 28th August.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said history is being made with the hosting of the fixtures, stating “we are absolutely thrilled to be hosting Round 23 and Round 24 of the NRL premiership right here in Rockhampton, providing an incredible opportunity for our community to embrace the NRL in their own backyard
“The Round 20 match (which didn’t go ahead) was going to be the first time an NRL premiership game was played in Central Queensland, and we’re delighted to get a second chance at this claim.
“We know our community is hungry for a slice of the NRL pie - the Round 20 match sold out in minutes with 70% of ticket holders from within the Rockhampton Region.”
“Our ticketing platform has been bolstered with crowd handling technology to cater for the expected demand of the upcoming rounds.”
Two stadium upgrade programs for one city
The traditional home of rugby league in Rockhampton, the Queensland Government has committed $25 million to the redevelopment of the CBD venue, located next to the Rockhampton Leagues Club.
The funds will help deliver a new grandstand at the venue to boost its capacity to 10,000.
However, with the location of a new or upgraded Rockhampton stadium having been a talking point for years, prior to the last Queensland election, the Federal Government committed $23 million for the development of a new stadium with a grandstand seating up to 7,500 people at the city’s Victoria Park adjacent to the Rocky Sports Club.
However, the proposed Rocky Stadium is located on a flood prone site on the banks of the Fitzroy River.
As recently as this week, Rockhampton newspaper The Morning Bulletin was reporting on the Victoria Park proposal, quoting Federal MP for Capricornia Michelle Landry as saying the Rocky Stadium would be operational by early 2023.
By contrast, QRL Central Division Manager, Rob Crow, advised that the Browne Park development was running "full steam ahead" and he was working with Queensland Sport and Recreation to prepare for the first stage of construction.
While Queensland's major parties have jointly backed the redevelopment of Brisbane's Ballymore, it appears agreement on the upgrading of a single venue in Rockhampton is some way off.

Cairns seems ambitious for maybe one or two games a year that aren't guaranteed? I guess Cowboys could take their pre season games there and then Govt encourage one or two of the cowboys away games to be brought there?

Before hbf park got refurbed they used to have a load of food trucks on the grass at the back which was great, then when the east stand was built they put in food outlets and now its just your usual crap deep fried rubbish. Canberra would have been the best burgers I've had at a ground, even came in branded Raiders wrapping!
the food at canberra stadium is actually pretty good tbh

Teams could also decide to take their Titans or Cowboys games there if they feel that it would draw a lower crowd back home, especially during seasons when Queensland team/s aren't playing well.

Point is when you have a great all enclosed intimate stadium like this available, it wouldn't surprise me to see teams wanting to use it. Especially if the Govt sponsored a team to play a game up there like Darwin and the Eels the last few years.

Good chance the soccer WC to be played every two years from 2028. This would obviously increase Australia's chance of hosting one day. Any proposed new major rectangular stadiums should consider the possibility to be able to increase to 40K (even temporarily) so they can host group games, or 60K for semis and 80K for a final.

Thats actually not a bad point for Sydney teams to take a 'home' game against Titans or Cowboys. I also think these stadiums would be put to good use whenever the A League second division gets off the ground.

And also the NRL needs to make the NSW and Qld Cup a bigger priority then what it is atm.

I doubt it will happen. Considering the length of the qualifiers already, I doubt the clubs which actually pay the players will agree to release them for yet more qualifiers. Mind you that's a different argument for a different sub-forum :)

I'd like to see the land beside the convention centre.

No regular tenants, and no hope of getting any anytime soon= massive waste of taxpayers dollars.

Seriously, in what reality does Cairns need a 20k stadium or Rockhampton a 10k stadium.

Both stadiums would have regular tenants, although only qcup sides. Cairns needs a new stadium, barlow park is absolutely decrepit and a city of Cairn's' size should be pushing for more NRL games considering their proximity to the Cowboys. If this stadium goes ahead I can see them hosting 4 games a year, 2 cowboys home games and 2 away games featuring the cows. Plus they could get more rugby league internationals, wallabies games and soccer games.

Barlow park needing an upgrade, or replacing, is neither here nor there.

There's absolutely no way a Qld Cup team could afford rent on a 20k stadium, not unless they're willing to go into massive debt, nor is one regular tenant enough to sustain the average stadium anymore. Regularly taking Cowboys games away from Townsville is a terrible idea as well.

I'd also argue that Cairns pushing for NRL games is a waste of time considering that there's next to no chance they get an NRL team in at least the next 50 years, and that it'd be in their best interest to accept that and push for the best feasible outcome to grow RL (and other sports) locally.

Councils/Govts still very much have the coliseum mentality of spending massive amounts of money on shiny edifices. I wonder if the Cairns tax payers are happy at the idea of $200mill on a stadium then ongoing costs to maintain it whilst it sits empty and more costs to try and get events to justify its existence?

Well, waste of money or not. At least there isn't a 20k oval being built in Cairns. It gives the city a good venue to attract events like NRL matches, soccer matches, Union matches and a good stadium venue.

Have you seen crowds? All this talk of 80k, 65k, 35k stadiums is silly. If we can get the nrl avg up to 25k in the next twenty years it will be a miracle. Forget ANZ, improve Allianz and get 3-4 decent 25k stadiums built.
If as projected by concerned Govt./Med Officials that playing venues be on a no jab no enter basis -you can cut crowds by at least 30%!
