The Cronulla Sharks are an embarrassment to the NRL and a cancer to our sport. From their dilapidated ground to their low supporter base in a tiny landlocked catchment and incessant off field scandals, they're nothing but a liability. The fact our game's corrupt and braindead administrators have allowed this unviable club to hold an NRL licence -- while Brisbane and NZ have been underserved with no representation in Adelaide and Perth -- makes the NRL the laughing stock of world sport.
There's no justifiable reason to keep this backwards club in the competition. Our broadcast rights deal would increase if we got rid of Cronulla and brought in Brisbane 3 or NZ 2 or Perth.

Wasn't it John Grant who put the grant at 130% to keep his job, only to get pushed out a year or two later?As much as I would agree with you, the fact is, not they or any other team is going anywhere. By the ARLC giving all clubs a monetary grant with very weak conditions to receive it for perpetuity means no club moves or gets booted out unless they themselves want to.
Absolutely crippling decision made by a weak ARLC at the time. Hell the head administration has always been weak since it lost the SL war. The game has never fully recovered. Now not only do the media companies have a massive sway over what the ARLC can and can't do, but so do all the clubs.
In a perfect world, all clubs would have to reach strong and measurable KPI's individually tailor made for each franchise to reach each year and assessments made every 3-5 year period, with real consequences if a club is not reaching their KPI's repeatedly, ranging from massive fines, monetary grants being docked or withheld, the ARLC taking over the junior development for that franchises nursery using part of the clubs grant as the funds to do so, but the club still has to spend the same player salary as all other clubs. In strong regions like NZ and the Warrior, striping them of the licence and reallocating it to a new organisation. In extreme scenarios, relocation or removal of that franchise completely, but complete removal would be very unlikely and an absolute last measure taken only if that club emblem had become toxic to the code itself for whatever reason.
In other words, if the game ever really wants to advance and reach its full potential it needs to be autonomous from all the other parts of the game and have ultimate veto power over them. Then it can impose its will over all of them and guide the game at all levels, including the clubs, out of minutia and amateurism and into a stronger and more successful sustainable model of professionalism.
I have always said, sporting bodies(especially a sport like RL in Australia) need a dictator approach to truly succeed. Otherwise they are subject to factions and self interest that will always hobble its progression and potential greatness like we have been witnessing for decades now. The weaker ones will always vote for less change of the status quo and the stronger ones will always go along with that because it keeps them at the top of the tree.
If only we could rid ourselves of the vice the game has put itself in...

I think the Sydney clubs that don't get a stadium upgrade will fall behind those who do. Broadcast revenue might save them, but there's no guarantee we'll continue to get $400m per annum in 2027. There's no guarantee Foxtel will be around by then as they're in debt to the tune of $2b and are losing money as people cut the cord and downgrade to Kayo. Foxtel lose roughly $40 to $50 per month when a customer downgrades from Foxtel to Kayo. If Foxtel falls over then no one else will pay what they've been giving us. Ch 9, 7 and 10 are dying.
There's no way they're making more money with customers cutting the cord for Kayo and Binge. Foxtel and Telstra have always spent more on content than they get back from customers.

Keary is one of our better speakers but he would’ve been at training leaving only the injured Radley or JWH available to choose from. HmmmHow embarrassing is Victor? Watching and listening to the other reps from the other sports he looks and sounds like the quintessential dumb arse RL player.

#partnersinthegameThat's not much of an excuse. These guys have all the resources and time between training and playing to better themselves. Especially when they are high profile and have been around for a few years. Radley knows that he may be called upon to do media engagements. He should be prepared, not stand there like a stunned moron with fear in his eyes and basically look and sound like a dumb arse and squirm to get out of there..
Seriously so many of these players do themselves absolutely no favours when it comes to real life stuff and how to present themselves to the public beyond footy and in turn they lower the image of the RL player and the NRL in general. So much for the mantra of pay us what we are worth and we will improve and increase our contribution to promoting the game.
Just words to help push for a bigger slice of the pie at the time. Whereas in reality, nothing has really changed in that regard at all. Most still run from the cameras when the media come into the dressing room for a comment. But they love a good giggle in the corner with their mates.

Secret plans to sell, rezone and develop land across Sydney railways

Selling or redeveloping land across Sydney’s rail network and morphing into a big property developer to deliver more than $40 billion in government windfalls are part of a secret plan by the state’s scandal-ridden rail corporation.
The ambitious plan, outlined in a confidential strategy obtained by the Herald, includes new hotels and the rezoning of more than 50 sites near train stations in Sydney suburbs for high-density developments.
The strategy reveals land at Wolli Creek, Hurstville and Redfern are on a hit-list of sites the Transport Asset Holding Entity (TAHE) plans to sell to “raise funds for future development”.
Accelerating work on an $11.6 billion development of 24 hectares of government-owned land in and around Central Station, as well as a further 10 hectares at Redfern and North Eveleigh, are outlined as strategic priorities over the next three years. Parramatta, Granville, Newtown, Dundas and Glendale are among other sites eyed for development in the longer term.
The plans for Central include 100,000 square metres of hotels, apartments or student accommodation, and more than 40,000 square metres of shops, restaurants, cafés and bars.
TAHE, which controls billions of dollars worth of the state’s rail assets including trains, stations and rail tracks, has been the subject of intense scrutiny and criticism since a Herald investigation last year revealed it had been set up to artificially inflate the NSW budget.
Since then, the government has been forced to write down the value of TAHE by $20 billion and inject billions of dollars into the rail corporation to placate the Auditor-General after delays in signing off the state’s accounts.
The 10-year business plan, which was completed in February, proposes that TAHE diversifies and becomes a property developer and owner of assets including hotels and food courts.
TAHE estimates it could turn over $1.9 billion a year in revenue if it develops and leases property. Alternatively, it could generate $40 billion if it develops and sells “transport assets”.
“Potential property development can realise significant value windfalls for government,” the business plan states.
Shadow treasurer Daniel Mookhey said the only reason the government was scheming to turn TAHE into a giant property developer was to plug a multibillion-dollar hole it was burning in the budget.
“If TAHE wasn’t a financial disaster, it wouldn’t have to auction $40 billion of the public’s transport assets,” he said. “Secretly plotting to build a hotel above Central Station shouldn’t be TAHE’s core business. Its job is to manage our railways safely.”
A Treasury spokesperson said both Treasurer Matt Kean and Finance Minister Damien Tudehope had endorsed TAHE’s 2021-22 statement of corporate intent, which summarised its planning and business strategy.
A TAHE spokesperson said it had prepared a property strategy focused on safety and sustainability to deliver long-term, low-risk commercial return.
“This is not unusual for similar state-owned corporations and infrastructure agencies across the world and is in line with standard business practice.
“One of our five legislated aims is to deliver positive commercial outcomes for NSW taxpayers. As a result, the TAHE board has explored a range of options across our portfolio.”
TAHE denied it had plans to operate hotels and said there was no intention of increasing rent for tenants.
An insider, who requested anonymity, said the business plan revealed a mad scramble to make TAHE stack up.
“What we are seeing outlined in this document are increasingly outlandish strategies to effectively turn lead into gold,” the insider said. “But it’s also high risk.”
TAHE’s business plan forecasts a “revenue uplift” by increasing retail spaces and “improving tenant selection”.
It outlines the potential for a $610 million real estate redevelopment of a precinct in and around Parramatta station, which it estimates has a “gross realisation of $1.1 billion”.
The plan cites a “massive shortage of supply” in Parramatta, partly due to the government moving more offices there. However, it lists among the risks relocating a bus layover and a “potentially complex station integration”.
A similar development at Hurstville is estimated at $200 million.
The business plan says the “optimal model” for TAHE should be to “engage and partner with developers to de-risk delivery and capitalise returns”.
I see the RA has Accor Stadium a distant 3rd behind the MCG & Optus oval as the preferred venue for the 2027 RWC final at this stage.

I'd doubt the NSW govt would do anymore then that tbh , but I suppose if they re visited the 800 million " rectangularisation " bringing up the 2 ends & squaring the venue off .. that'd be a good thing.
Hell if they did both the roof & the ends we'd have a half decent venue with 60K of the 75K seats in pretty good positions. Only the top tiers past about half way up on the western & eastern sides still utter crap
