The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

it really is stunning, the stadium, the transport links, the parks around it and its location. Not often I congratulate a Liberal Govt but they nailed this one! Only annoying thing is they should never have wasted $125mill upgrading HBF Park in 2013 and they could have built a rectangular stadium on the empty land right next to it!

It did look great. Obviously the cost is/was huge but it is a 101 on how to design a stadium to enhance the surrounding areas. Adelaide Oval was also really well done with the bridge going towards the ground.

I haven’t been to HBF Park but if that’s what has happened that is really stupid. Do they still use Subiaco? I remember going there for a work conference and I wonder if they could use that site for a rectangular ground if push came to shove

Another advantage of centralised stadiums is that they can get a lot of corporate use. I have been to heaps of conferences at MCG or Docklands - during the day evening. Very pleasant looking out over the field - much better than a hotel and both stadiums have plenty of parking underneath.

Assume you would get that in the regional cities as well, but would you at Penrith or Cronulla?

It would be difficult to see the latter.

I think Penrith would be more of a shot than Cronulla because you could tap into Western NSW business networks or something like that. Penrith could almost be seen as part regional/part city to some. Cronulla I just don’t see that happening.

Penrith should liaise with the A-League, NBL and Super Netball to add a Penrith team to those competitions under the provision that the NSW Gov builds a new football stadium and indoor arena adjacent to it.

Didn’t the NBL have a Western Sydney team in the competition at one stage?

Penrith will have a conference centre, 2 hotels across the road and an Airport 20 mins up the road. So potentially

NBL could be possible, maybe Netball as well. But unless the Aleague give MacArthur the flick I don’t think we’ll see another Aleague team in sydney. The market is already saturated

All of the above. I was pissed off and wrote to the club - especially after they sent us emails stating they would look after members who maintain their membership throughout the SCG stay. A lot of people I know dropped them. Although Bronze has gone up $50, new members pay another $50 on top of that. So they have looked after us, I guess.

TBF the bronze package is still reasonable at $250 but they could’ve at least included the corners which is reserved for GA?
That’s great value for the new stadium to be fair

No Subi's been sold off for housing and offices.

Penrith tried to buy West Sydney Wanderers but David Gallop had a hissy fit and said an NRL club couldn’t own an A-League team. SWS fans wish otherwise.
During the lead up to the 2000 Olympics an indoor sports centre was to be built in Penrith as the Basketball venture but the government put at Bankstown.
The SRU doesn’t want a team west of Concord, and kicked Penrith Emus out. They now play in the Canberra comp.
How do they get a second tenant?
The area has been neglected and discriminated against for decades, and this is just another example!

Built it as close to the soon to be NSW second airport line as you can. You might not get a second tenant straight away but you could probably get some in say 10 years.

Stadiums only work if you build them next to mass public transport.

Other events are held at Robina Stadium and Townsville Stadium. Rugby union and soccer games have been taken there. Concerts are also held.
From memory, Penrith have also hosted Matildas and Pacific tests. The case for Penrith is you have people who live far west.. A stadium that could have an appeal with the country folk, simply because it's nearest to them.

There are some sydney clubs in NRL that are small fanbases (Sharks and Manly) and likely will always be small fanbases. They are the ones that ideally would get $150-200mil spent on their local stadia to get it to something like modern 20-25k standard. Then we have clubs like Tigers, Bulldogs, Dragons, Penrith that have the potential to go over that 20k avg in modern 30k venues.

The problem is that no-one has the money they are willing to spend on 6 or 7 more Sydney venues. So regardless if you feel suburban tart ups or new modern stadia are the answer the Govt isnt going to fund 6 or 7 more improvements. Not to mention the need to bring Accor up to standard for major events. And tbh I dont blame them.

NRL clubs in Sydney now have 2 state of the art stadiums they can use if they choose. If they choose not to that's on them. I get the sense in 10 years some clubs will have been left well behind, even more so than now as they refuse to face a reality of their situation and will cling to Vlandys dream that everyone gets a local ground and Al's dated belief that kids running on the pitch after a game is the most important thing.

I mean with some change in thinking Sydney is nearly there already!

Souths and Roosters Allianz
Eels and Tigers Commbank
Dogs Accor or ideally Commbank
Dragons Allianz PT
Penrith new stadium

That only leaves Shark Park, Brookvale and Win to get sorted out.
Then the Govt can spend a few mill on each of the local grounds for NRLW, reserve grade, local community usage etc.
Penrith has always had a small non travelling fanbase

Maybe we should try and buy the Macarthur FC team and move them to Penrith? Not like they’ve got a heap of fans.
