The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

End of day it still comes down to stadiums. If they allow ovals then it’s feasible. If they don’t then it isn’t. Pretty much that’s the start and end point for a bid decision.

Sydney Olympics cost $3bill, brisbanes expected to cost $5bill. A WC where we had to have 12 stadiums of 40k plus is going to cost an awful lot more, and leave us with a bunch of stadiums that sit more than half empty for most games afterwards Unless they can be reduced post the cup. Realistically your looking at $5bill plus for 4 new stadiums and another $5-10bill or so to get the other 7 stadiums up to spec, if they can be increased.
Then any other infrastructure spend across the country we’d need inc training facilities for each nation. Do we think the govt’s of the land would be up for that sort of spend for a one off sports tournament?
There's been stadiums that hosted the world cup final with an athletics running track. Yokohama and Berlin spring to mind. Also not every world cup stadium is rectangular, but it has to be FIFA compliant.

Right now, the one oval stadium Australia could/might use is Kardinia Park in Geelong. It is currently under construction and once complete, it will seat 40,000.

Geelong played nine games at Kardinia last year, so they are not full time. Geelong could host games before and after the world cup. The ground might be more suitable for soccer/football with the width dimensions not as big as the MCG.

But again, it's hard to know what funding is required, or if they do get funding, until Aus/NZ launch a bid.

Are we also assuming that grounds like Docklands and Optus aren’t suitable.

My prediction is if we ever host a World Cup it will be co-host with Indonesia. And they probably get the final TBH.

kind of funny how AFL have screwed over the southern states into never hosting any big FIFA world cup games - mens and womens
'Sporting capital of the world' Melbourne plays no part in the big games at WWC 2023.

They get one Aus group game and two round of 16 games (not Aus). All further Aussie group and finals games will be in Sydney or Brisbane.

The meltdown next year when that dawns on the casual fans/journos is going to be hilarious.

We won't be getting it in our lifetime unfortunately. No cricket oval is suitable. You'd need to build a new stadium in Melbourne plus major upgrades to the rectangular stadiums in Adelaide and Perth. Or we just leave those cities out completely. Their governments will never come to the party. They are too AFL centric.

And before people jump in and say the World Cup has had oval stadiums before - you are correct. However, there is a huge difference between an Oval stadium with an athletics track and a f**king CRICKET oval.

If FIFA judge Perth as not being fit for a soccer game they are donkeys

even Etihad isn’t that bad

lack of stadia won’t be why we won’t get it

I thought the MCG was deemed FIFA compliant?

As stated though, I can't see a World Cup here anytime soon.

Perth has a rectangular mode where they can bump in seats:

Yep. Soccer is much bigger in Sydney than Melbourne. A League crowds are even below Sydney’s.

That's not true.

Soccer is on an equal footing for support with Sydney both historically and currently. The A-League metric is not a good indicator.

The lack of involvement in big games at WCC 2023 is quite shameful for Australia's second largest city. It is going to be a terrific event.
