There's been stadiums that hosted the world cup final with an athletics running track. Yokohama and Berlin spring to mind. Also not every world cup stadium is rectangular, but it has to be FIFA compliant.End of day it still comes down to stadiums. If they allow ovals then it’s feasible. If they don’t then it isn’t. Pretty much that’s the start and end point for a bid decision.
Sydney Olympics cost $3bill, brisbanes expected to cost $5bill. A WC where we had to have 12 stadiums of 40k plus is going to cost an awful lot more, and leave us with a bunch of stadiums that sit more than half empty for most games afterwards Unless they can be reduced post the cup. Realistically your looking at $5bill plus for 4 new stadiums and another $5-10bill or so to get the other 7 stadiums up to spec, if they can be increased.
Then any other infrastructure spend across the country we’d need inc training facilities for each nation. Do we think the govt’s of the land would be up for that sort of spend for a one off sports tournament?
Right now, the one oval stadium Australia could/might use is Kardinia Park in Geelong. It is currently under construction and once complete, it will seat 40,000.
Geelong played nine games at Kardinia last year, so they are not full time. Geelong could host games before and after the world cup. The ground might be more suitable for soccer/football with the width dimensions not as big as the MCG.
But again, it's hard to know what funding is required, or if they do get funding, until Aus/NZ launch a bid.
