There you go again selfish Sharks supporters. News flash no taxpayers money for Shark Park an you won't be getting a new stadium built in the shire for the Sharks. So you get nothing.
Agreed, tax payers should not be funding your own development, sell one of your assets and fix up your stadium on your own, fancy the Dolphins if they asked thier qld govt to help them refurbish their owned stadium, theyd get laughed at...
No no, ..no,no,no,no you own you stadium, you fix it

Yea but we dont own it as an asset, its like asking the govt to fix my ferrari, or blake fergi Ferguson to ask the NRL to fix his nose, after he chased the YEN for RU on his way outta pawwa

No hassle, you brought up a great question on the perception of folks who hear of stadia getting built for NRL teams and go, Why them?
Panthers can afford to build their own ground

they don’t because the return is poor and they can put their money into commercial property and hotels

They dont coz they dont need to, asking the wrong questions pal
How much rent does cronulla pay?, how much rent does the broncos pay, how much rent does redcliffe pay, who does the upkeep?

It’s funny reading this thread seeing opposing fans getting their backs up thinking the sharks fans in here actually think we deserve govt money. Also telling us how shit our ground is when if you look around you will note that we comment on how shit it is more than anyone.

But, in saying that owning that ground is what has definitely saved the club and secured the future so what would be the point of spending the money on the stadium without completing the development first. Do some reading and get a clue about why it was done in first place. The sharks will have to deal with what is to come but you can’t question why they have done what they have done.

What we can’t cop is freebies in the range of 400M being handed out to buy votes when that money could help other areas too. Old 7 kids Perrottet wants kids helped out for the future then he literally contradicts himself saying no funding.

It’s the private ownership thing

if Cronulla gave up the ground it’s more a chance of getting redone

and sharks did say no to sharing a new ground at kogarah

If sharks fans aren’t actually asking for funds, then why the angst amongst other fans is my point. Let us live or die by our own decisions.

Oh and if they gave it up, there is still no chance anything gets down to it. Zero. It’s in a safe seat where it wouldn’t make a difference.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr shoots down hopes A-League can revive Canberra's Civic stadium push
ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr has torpedoed hopes the A-League's arrival in Canberra will fast track plans for a new stadium in the city as his focus shifts to a Bruce redevelopment.

"We're looking for an MOU between the territory government and the Sports Commission around the redevelopment of that precinct. Initially, there had been some suggestion that the AIS might divest of a significant amount of land," Barr said. "I think that's largely now off the agenda and what's being proposed is a rejuvenation of the sports facilities with the potential for some ancillary precinct improvements, like hotels.

That was quick. Predicable, but quick.

I bet you anything that the plan will be for those 'ancillary precinct improvements, like hotels' to be built over all the parking without any improvements made to the public transport options as well.

I also bet you anything that we'll suddenly be talking about an oval stadium in Civic, or some other more central location, for the AFL and cricket as soon as this redevelopment of the AIS is finished.

It's an absolute joke. Of all the places that should be getting a quality central rectuangular stadium Canberra seems like the most obvious choice ever. It will soon have 3 professional sporting teams playing out of the stadium (even more if womens sport keeps on growing) and the potential to attract international sport as well. It's a disgrace that it hasn't happened yet.

We probably have the most developed women's sports scene in the country, and at very least both Canberra United and the NRLW team would use it regularly, and the Super W side would probably open for the Brumbies at the new stadium on occasion as well.

It’s hard to understand the canberra govt reticence Tbh. If little old hobart can seriously consider funding a new stadium why on earth can’t canberra? Its getting to the point they’ll have the worse stadium in the country for a decent sized city with professional clubs.

It's not hard to understand at all really.

We're effectively a one party state where the political class has been ideologically captured, and because of that ideological capture they've effectively bankrupted the territory, mainly in recent times, but not exclusively, by throwing every cent in the infrastructure budget into building a tram, that not only can the city not really afford, but won't actually achieve what they're trying to achieve anyway.

In other words, over the last 20 years almost all of Canberra's infrastructure and services have slowly deteriorated from some of the best, or the best, in the country, to some of the worst or one their way there, while they've pissed around with fashionable, virtue signalling (the term is massively overused, but accurate in this case), politics. But because of the Liberals image at the federal level, the fact that nobody will really give a third party a shot, and to an extent our rate of immigration from other parts of the country (that's a whole essay in of it's self), Labour have faced no consequences for it.

We're at the point now where we're so far in dept that we can't really afford a new stadium, despite rates being the highest they've ever been, and desperately needing one (multiple actually, Manuka, the arena, smaller venues, almost all of them aren't fit for purpose anymore). But even if they could find the money to afford a new stadium, that money would undoubtably be better spent on other more important infrastructure projects and programs in actuality. I know that's a lame meme most of the time, but it's the fact of the matter in this case.

Basically the ACT is f**ked, the people whom have the power to fix it are either unwilling to or don't care, and I don't know what can be done to fix it. I guess we just have to wait until things get bad enough that people can't put up with it anymore and vote Labour and the Greens (just voting the Greens out would make a huge difference TBH, but again, that's a whole essay in of it's self) out no matter the consequences, but who knows how much damage will be done before that day comes.

Barr's main focus is for his legacy for Canberra to have a rail network. It's that simple. All he wants is for when he leaves office is for the ACT light rail network to be a multi-line transport network. That is where the bulk of the funding is going. The ACT has a 16-9 ALP/Green-Coalition split in the assembly. The Greens are also pro-light rail and they now hold significant sway in the assembly. There has not been a Coalition Chief Minister since 1998 and if anything the terrirory is skewing more towards the ALP and the Greens. There is not going to be a change of government any time soon. You can say what you like about Barr, the AFL and the stadium issue but it's clearly not going to move the needle for ACT voters.

One of the issues I see is despite all of the doom and gloom, the government keeps stressing the stadium is structurally sound. It may not be a state of the art facility anymore, but it's not going to collapse and kill anyone. I think the most likely outcome at this point is as more AIS land is sold off money will go into creating an entertainment precinct in Bruce for before/after game atmosphere and that the light rail line from Civic to Belconnen will go via this precinct to enhance transport links. They'll then find $30-50 million to fix any major safety issues at Bruce and then do minor upgrades with what is left over.

The fact they announced earlier this year they were building a new big screen and replacing all of the monitors in the stadium at a cost of several million dollars was the final nail in the coffin for me that there was any intention of building a new venue. It's not going to happen, we just need to accept it and move on.
