this rules out any chance of Tassie ever having a a half decent rectangular stadium. Sucks for the three other football codes. No A league team down there I guess.

A lot of people here complaining about Penrith getting a new stadium all to themselves, well how does this strike you mob! And $240m federal money! Go Labor and AFL. all this money for a team that doesn’t exist. But you know what have the panthers ever done for Penrith and surrounding areas Pffft.
Complete & Utter BS.

If this is correct then expect Albo to make a number of other similar announcements this budget round. Let’s just hope Peter has been in his ear. By the way, expect active opposition to this Hobart stadium. People are not happy.

Absolutely disgusting

I did wonder. Tell you something though mate. It’s going to kill the cbd and access to the hospital for some years while under construction. This could get ugly.

Did you see Richard Flanagan (author) have a go at it. Absolutely brilliant.

They could spend half that money to have 3,000 people in cheap affordable housing. F***** bullshit.

As there are 3 other football codes ,I recommend that the new Tassie stadium be rectangular and the singletted ones learn how to play their sport on a smaller field. It's for the good of the country, in these harsh financial times. One can dream.

In all honesty as the Feds are prepared to throw in $240m , as stated by another forum gent, this has created
a precedent .
Sure we have the $250m promise for PNG but wouldn't that come under foreign aid, and wouldn't money allocated to rectangular stadiums in this country fall under the Oz sport infrastructure banner?
To be fair there has to be some investments in smaller cities and states to make them more liveable to steam the tide of domestic migration and take pressure of the big urban centres of Melbourne Sydney and Brisbane

And the "city" known as the Sutho Shire with a population of approaching 230-250K ,will retain its quaint stadium .Sheesh.

That's the price you pay for contrsucting your own stadium. In my opinion facilities owned privately should receive $0 public funds for them. It's not an anti-Sharks thing, I'd say the same even if it was the Roosters in that boat.

Yeh but that’s not good enough

he wants png due to China

China isn’t a risk of invading tasmania soon

he will need to chip in for Penrith and Canberra as well that would square the ledger

Canberra has been mentioned as interesting the Feds. Though both won't happen because of the States

Depends on the Business case really, Though that said not sure the capacity lures any big name concerts etc down there

All's fair , in that case you'd be OK if the Feds put in $200m towards a new rectangular stadium in Adelaide or Perth. After all having modern rectangular stadiums would makes these interstate cities more liveable for people who moved from the east Coast,Europe,NZ and the Pacific Islands.
I have no problem with govt grants ,as long as they mean when it comes to sport diversity.

Then who should?
Penrith and it’s supporters deserve a new stadium for the region before any other NSW based team!
No fan base in the NRL "deserves" a new stadium. The current Penrith stadium is fine. I actually think enough money has been spent on stadiums in Sydney. Newcastle should get an upgrade to something like the SFS 40k capacity and maybe Canberra. Sydney is done.

I wonder what Peter Fitzwilkinson thinks of Tasmania’s new stadium? He will probably say nothing.

Still think Accor needs a refurb given it hosts premier events

NSW govt should be straight on the blower and asking them to half fund a new national rectangular stadium at Homebush! Or ACT a decent stadium in Canberra.

Of course Tassie being a marginal seat area has nothing to do with the Feds decision :)

Understand where you're coming from. But the prior State Govt set a precedent by ATT allocating sorry promising such funding to the Sharks/Manly and Tigers. If they hadn't entertained the thought I would accept the status quo.I do so now anyway. So it's yesterdays fish and chips wrappers.
The irony in all of this private schools have no problems receiving large Govt grants.

Nsw govt has already said their budget is 300 mill for penrith.

feds can cover that gap

Canberra yeh the chief fumbler is an issue
