All's fair , in that case you'd be OK if the Feds put in $200m towards a new rectangular stadium in Adelaide or Perth. After all having modern rectangular stadiums would makes these interstate cities more liveable for people who moved from the east Coast,Europe,NZ and the Pacific Islands.
I have no problem with govt grants ,as long as they mean when it comes to sport diversity.
Not really pro the government spending that much on sports stadiums period and I think this one is especially bad as it will only be used 7 times a year.

I have never been to Hobart so I can’t say what they lack. Surely an AFL team could play at the cricket ground and the 250m get spent on critical infrastructure in that city

Exactly. We have two fit for purpose stadiums already one in Launceston and one in Hobart. We don’t need a new stadium.

To be fair, their bbl side will probably use it. That’s another five games.

The Sydney stadiums did cop a fair deal of criticism, especially with the cost over a billion combined. But there was always going to be content with five home teams over two stadiums, and that’s before you talk about other events like concerts.

yeh its almost like your ignoring any competent organisation would have got a contract with the govt lol

AFL: build a quality stadium and we will invest $360mill in Tasmania to grow the game and make it a success
NRL: slap some lipstick on these pigs or else we will take the GF away you lying dogs.

Hmmm which tactic one is most likely to work I wonder??

Anthony Albanese is expected to unveil a significant infrastructure investment for Tasmania this weekend that will facilitate the construction of a controversial new stadium in Hobart and enable the state to have a team in the AFL.

Amid hostility to a taxpayer-funded football stadium from the state Labor opposition, the federal Liberals and federal Tasmanian independents Andrew Wilkie and Jacqui Lambie, Mr Albanese is poised to inject as much as $240 million into the project.
The state Liberal government, led by Premier Jeremy Rockliff, will contribute $375 million and the AFL will contribute $15 million.

While there is overwhelming support in Tasmania for the state to have a team in the AFL, it will only be granted if there is a fit-for-purpose stadium.

Mr Rockliff has planned for a stadium to be built at Macquarie Point in Hobart as part of a precinct worth about $715 million.

AFL fan promotes afl.

and Hawthorn have apparently committed to continue taking games to Hobart (but I'd imagine will probably stop if/once their Tas Gov sponsorship ends), not sure about north Melb

throw in the AFL and BBL womens teams, any extra test cricket matches that are probably more likely with it, and other events like live music that might now start to travel down ad it'd get used more than a suburban ground in Sydney

end of the day I think the gov can warrant the spending in tas more so than suburban Sydney as investment into a smaller state that needs all the help it can get financially, the tourism dollars a new stadium would bring to the state I'd image would be quite welcomed

but fair is fair and surely this bodes well for Canberra getting matched funding for a rectangular oval

Nsw govt has already said their budget is 300 mill for penrith.

feds can cover that gap

Canberra yeh the chief fumbler is an issue

let’s see if Bryan Fletcher is actually a good ceo if he doesn’t raise it he’s a flop

Commbank cost $360m though. That was before Construction costs went through the roof.

$300m won't get a stadium. Especially not on the current site where sewage pipes need to get moved for any major construction.

Sydney has a state of the art Stadium, Very hard to get the feds involved in such things

Canberra and Hobart has no such luxury ( So an easier sell )

Yes it will maybe 20k one tiered

but Bryan Fletcher can step up

he had a lot to say about how the arlc should run the game back in feb now it’s time to do ceo things and get the money sorted for the paceway site

The Paceway won't be around much longer anyway. Better off waiting for that to go and get it for cheaper

BBL will stay at Bellerive. New stadium is not for cricket apparently.

They have to sort out the location soon imo or the opportunity will go away totally

ideal scenario is feds and council and maybe panthers themselves all chip in on top and it’s another commbank

It’s an afl ground mate. It’s not for cricket. Cricket is based at Bellerive where we already have a 20000 stadium. As for tourism we’ve got no shortage of that. What we need is affordable accommodation, health spending and spending on schools. We already have two stadiums fit for afl purpose. Is it that hard to understand this is not required and is a waste of money?

All these, they could spend it on hospitals arguments, yeh they could, but they could also not spend on overseas aid, submarines and the billions of other $'s that flow to things that are arguably not making Australia a better place for its citizens. Health budgets are billions and billions of $'s. a few hundred million one offs doesn't make a jot to the quality of health care in reality.

The reason all clubs in any code should aim for new stadia is sustainability. New stadiums attract more fans and more corporates and make clubs more viable. If Govts should be funding them or the clubs themselves is a very debatable point and has probably been around since romans complained of sht roads when colosseums were being built!

Will need to get the ground built quick before the AFL starts trying to sniff around for a 20th team

AFL need a 20th team. ACT Gov & feds, hmm how about a brand new city stadium Afl ground. Fans & Boot lickers alike cheer. The rest of the sporting landscape, How about some coin for Rectangular sport around the country & outside of the Sydney cbd. State, Fed, & media are like you people literally want us to take money from the hospitals, how could you.

the Last 13 years & Upcoming New oval Stadia -
Hobart Stadium, Liberal & Labor/AFL
Gabba Stadium Olympic money, Labor/AFL
Adelaide Oval complete revamp, Labor/AFL
Perth Stadium, Labor/AFL
Sydney Giants Stadium, Liberal/AFL
Gold Coast Suns Stadium, Labor/AFL
Melbourne Marvel Stadium massive Upgrades, Labor/AFl
Darwin TIO Oval, Labor/AFL
Geelong Stadium redevelopment, Labor/AFL

I’m not real flash on math or geography but I’d say the only place AFL hasn’t put a new or newly developed Oval is in Canberra. They’ve ticked all the capital cities & big metro areas in the country in just over a decade. And some people think the Raiders & Brumbies will get a new stadium HA!
More chance of wiping your arse’s on the moon.

Cricket and afl are twin souls these days. Put in joint funding for government grants. Believe me. I’ve seen them. They’ll combine for a Canberra stadium and that’s where team 20 will be.
