London's olympic stadium is roundly hated by West Ham fans because it is, you guessed it, an oval.

No amount of retractable seating and fancy lights can take away the horrible viewing experience.

Brisbane simply cannot make the same mistake Sydney and London have made before it.
Absolutely agree - for sports, multi-use is a folly.

There are football stadiums, athletics venues & ovals - each have their own intrinsic requirements.

Trying to cater to different requirements means compromises -and that degrades, and sometimes ruins the spectator experience.

Here in New Zealand we're only just getting out of that mindset & building separate rectangular stadiums & cricket ovals.

Hamilton rejected a multi-use proposal 20 or so years ago, Christchurch & Dunedin bulldozed and replaced their multi-use grounds with separate grounds, and Auckland might be in the process of moving on from Eden Park.

It would be a huge step BACKWARDS for Brisbane to go towards multi-use.

So what outcome do you want and how much will it cost ?

It's quite easy to see why they hate it.

There could have been some merit in the oval being a new build around 50k, then the Gabba site could be used for a 20-25k stadium for the Roar & Reds. Upgrade Suncorp to 60-70k & build the new entertainment centre at Roma Street and Brisbane is set for the foreseeable future. 3 inner city, multi-tenanted stadiums and a new entertainment venue, all close to public transport.

It would have cost more than the allocated budget but at least that is ticking all boxes. The review had a chance to go in that direction, problem is they only wanted to tick one box and went for spending 2-3 stadiums worth of money on one at Victoria Park and nothing for the rest, then still went over budget, which is why it was knocked back.

$3.4b for a mid-sized oval, the 2nd most expensive ever built? GTFOOH.

The architects behind the new stadium proposal to "save" us aren't even trying to hide their bias. It's supposedly an Olympic stadium but the mock up has AFL markings on it

Speaking of 60k stadiums. QSAC in its current configuration is 2k short of that, most of it 'temp' grandstands that have been there for decades. No reason why a refurb couldn't make that place at least 60 or 70k and it will cost nowhere near 1.6B
