you dont watch the Olympics, you wouldnt know lol
So the athletics has to have 80k people watching it but the most important bits the opening and closing ceremonies will only be 53k ?

Doesn’t make sense to me

and that’s without even talking about the white elephant the oval will be

haven’t we learned anything from the disaster that is Accor

Suncorp could also host the swimming if they wanted to like Paris

I’ve never seen a comment by him about an NRL game tbh. Yes I’m joking about him being an afl fan but I’m serious about the fact he never comments on a nrl game. He complains about crowds, wanks on about a Perth team and endlessly advocates for afl stadiums.
Oh but he does - Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist brother - Like I said, I love a good PR jibe, but it needs to be relevant

He does seem to wax lyrical about the topics you listed though. That is 100% true.

Olympics of the past is not the model of a more sustainable Olympics of the future. As planned by the IOC.

While there have been some crazy large new oval stadiums built specifically for the Olympics in the past, including Sydney, it’s not the model the IOC wants to see continue. They don’t want governments going bankrupt or hanging onto white elephants, it’s not good for the Olympics.

A smaller more economical athletics stadium would be perfectly good for the games.

Now Australia is in a highly unique position as a country where a large oval stadium could actually be utilised post games - for cricket and afl.

So it’s not a question of an upgraded qsac not being ‘worthy’ of hosting the athletics - according to IOC’s updated strategy to make hosting the games more economical and sustainable it’s perfect.

it’s a question of where the qld and Australian government sees worth spending the funds.

I think we can all agree the showpiece and largest stadium for Brisbane should be a rectangular stadium given the demand for rectangular sports in the state.

Building a costly new oval will mean that it will set back a rectangular showpiece for Brisbane for decades like it has in Sydney. this isn’t in the best interest of Brisbane, rugby league or anyone other than the AFL honchos.

The govts current proposal is for Suncorp to host both opening and closing

so you agree then in that case there’s no need for an 80k stadium just for the athletics ?
This nutjob has painted himself into a corner promoting an afl stadium and he can’t dig himself out.

the long term goal

new 70-80k Olympic stadium that can be scaled down to 50-55k
Suncorp upgraded to 70k
a new 20k boutique stadium in the city (maybe on vic park with the new oval or at Ballymore?)
20-25k stadium at Ipswich for the new NRL Jets team
Redcliffe to be upgraded to 20k with better facilities

Thats S Qlnd sorted for NRL and other sports for decades to come

Scaled down to 50-55k post Olympics is too generous. What oval sports events in Brisbane will attract 55k after the Olympics?

Suncorp should be upgraded to around 65k, and hold annual major events like Origin, Magic Round. Wallabies, Socceroos and Matildas would use the ground too. Ideally there would be a boutique 25k stadium for the Reds, Roar and NRLW. If that occurred, it would free up Suncorp for concerts during the summer months.

Concerts would be best suited at a rectangular ground like Suncorp because people will be closer to the artist or artists performing.

From a league perspective, a 65k Suncorp and a boutique 25k rectangular ground would be a great legacy from the games. A legacy where rectangular sports missed out after Sydney 2000.

As for oval sports, if a new stadium is built, have it at 60k for the games and then reduce it to 40k afterwards.

Except the next olympics is being hosted in a stadium of 77k with a budget of $10billion for the games.

Brisbane applied based on they would have a suitable stadium with a capacity that they were going to spend $2.7bill on. So thats a furphy about somehow these where always going to be the austerity games the IOC was planning for the future.

Mr Coates put forward a proposal using the existing Gabba, Lang Park and QSAC (Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre) stadiums, in line with the so-called "new norm" that encourages host cities to use the facilities they already have.

And this is the option the government picked, opting for less expensive upgrades and "modest enhancements".

Give up. You’ve lost this argument and are just trying to dig yoursrlf out. It’s pathetic to watch.

Coates said in the article above talk of a new Gabba was damaging the ioc brand
Then why didnt they raise that as an issue when the application was submitted?

In reality what he said was ""He expressed to me that the Olympics brand was being badly damaged by the public debate"

So not the plan but the politics and the indecision leading to public divide was damaging. Clearly the IOC was happy with the original plan.

Reality is Brisbane will be on track to spend similar to LA and Paris. This notion that IOC is cutting back and using Brisbane as a showcase for its new austerity approach is nonsense. The problem is politics have hijacked Brisbane Olympic venue decisions, And despite independent recommendations the pollies continue to use it as a football as we approach election time.

You should tell John Coates you know better than him

I’m just going off what an ioc official and the current qld govt have said

No you're misrepresenting what he said. He said the public debate was damaging, not the original stadium choice was damaging. It is clear the IOC was more than happy with the original plan of building a new stadium otherwise they wouldnt have awarded them hosting rights.
And as for using existing stadiums, how many cities in the world who havent hosted Olympics in recent times have a suitable athletics stadium? They would nearly all require significant spend. LA's was unusually a 77k athletics sized stadium, and theyre still spending $3/4 bill on it.
