No, but there IS football, traditionally one of the highest attended sports of the Olympics.
I believe it's played on rectangular stadiums generally in this country.
There's also Rugby 7's.
Football and Sevens are played on a rectangular field too.
and traditionally those sports are shared with other cities due to having games on at the same time. so whats stopping them using cbus, country bank, suncorp for big games, and the upgraded sunshine coast and barlow park in cairns for lower games?

i dont get it if there wasnt enough time to re-do gabba, what makes ya think there is enough time to redo suncorp? @Red&BlackBear seems to have a good understanding of stadiums in brissy, any reason why what ya said about upgrading suncorp cant happen?

How does a Brisbane Olympics wind up with no legacy for rugby league? Not even a lick of paint for the most used stadium in the state? AFL leeches have hijacked another Australian Olympics.
Check who the review team met with and you'll find your answer.

Rugby League was asleep at the wheel on this. From the NRL Commission, the QRL, Brisbane Broncos and Redcliffe.

Complete failure on all their parts.

There was talking of the nines being in the Olympics whilst I think union sevens may have been booted
Rugby 7s is a core sport of the Olympics nowadays.

Each hosting committee gets up to 6 optional sports and there is a petition that league 9s is one of them.

Nothing stopping it and that's exactly what will happen, but the biggest matches of those two sports are held at the largest rectangular stadium, and that is Suncorp.
As far as I know, there's no oval football sports in the Olympics.
Go figure?

T20 will be included in LA so ilI would assume it would be back for 32.

SQ aren’t in a position to look at expanding Suncorp to its maximum capacity as per existing provisions and the demolition of the internal awning has its constructibility challenges. These works will take longer than the NRL off season and Suncorp is used a bit during that time frame for other events. So there are timing implications involved with any upgrade.

Further to this Suncorp does have continuous internal upgrades and renovations to certain sections through the stadium to improve existing facilities from general seating to function areas, corporate boxes to members areas. This might not be overly evident to the general public but they do happen quite often.

From NRL’s perspective.

Brisbane/Broncos/Dolphins: Absolute Zero benefit. Suncorp may become slightly more public transport accessible which it should as time goes by anyway.

Gold Coast/Titans: Improved transport links that incorporate Robina remain. Stadium remains as is which is fine. Minor benefit.

Townsville/Cowboys: Zero benefit.

Sunshine Coast: Stadium upgrade to go ahead as planned. New Sunshine Coast rail will run to Birtinya walking distance to the stadium. “Metro” to the SC Airport from there. - Very Minor benefit.

Cairns: New grandstand to be built as planned. Very Minor benefit.

Really disappointed - would have loved an increase to Suncorp, but it is what it is.

I would like to understand the Broncos/Phins/NRL/ARU's rationale - like were they totally unbothered with lobbying because they couldn't bare a few years without action at Suncorp? Or are they already happy with the corporate facilities that have recently been renovated? I don't think the Broncos will care until the entire stadium is reserved for members.

As @Red&BlackBear has mentioned there are a lot of construction challenges, from memory they can't even excavate further, and given all the internal work they've done it sounds like it all became a useless ambition.

Aru asked for an upgrade to Ballymore which the qru own and got around 30 million

Actually asked for another 30 million after that too

I find it ridiculous that the biggest stadium in qld, and most expensive in Australia, is now an oval, it will be called ‘Brisbane Stadium’ in perpetuity, and be integrated with an AFL hall of fame to mimic downtown Victoriania.
