I agree with the majority, IMO there is no arguement. Melbourne has to stay. Yeah, they may struggle down there, but what about Souths, they struggle more than what Melbourne do and i don't hear anyone saying that the NRL should get rid of Souths.   Melbourne has to stay, no doubt about it.

Fundamentally - Melbourne is NOT moving due to the fact that SPONSORS have said to the NRL they will pull advertising of it shrinks to a two State Game.

Non Melbournites cannot see the HUGE CORPORATE BLOCKS that AFL puts on any winter game in Melbourne that is NOT AFL. This is why soccer has failed in Melbourne even though more kids play soccer than AFL. This is the reason why Rugby steered well clear of Melbourne.

You really have to remember that as a supposedly "Sporting Capital" Melbourne is a farce it only ever gives TOKEN support to other codes and then blocks them out of the media / sponsorships with the other. 95% of Sports Journalists in Melbourne cannot tell the difference between Rugby and Rugby League. This is NOT ignorance it is belligerent ignorance.

I honestly think Melbourne Storm has done a great job with the crap that is has been given. It's supporter base is really loyal and slowly growing.

If YOU want League to survive at all then you need the al the non Sydney teams to survive.

If you want to fix the game - make it so there is no NSWRL, QRL, ARL etc. There is ONLY an NRL.

one needs to remind the nrl and others on here that this is the right decision.

If they move now they will never have a team in Melbourne, How about we move the Roosters to Adelaide GS?

You all are living in a fools paradise in saying give then 15 or 20 years or wait till storm juniors are wearing the green and gold ( are the storm changing their colours??), look at the swans etc etc etc

It ain't going to work no matter if you give it 100 years and 1 billion dollars and i have more chance of winning lotto than a storm junior has of playing for australia. No youngsters are interested in playing league as they are raised in afl households.

To say kick out souths would be a disaster as no matter what the area is true rugby league as the central coast and gold coast both are.

Melbourne is not and never has been rugby league and never will be either.

The nrl should relocate the storm and bring in the gold coast at the 16th team.

What sponsor will pull the plug if league is played in two states - the biggest and third biggest and growing state

The NRL would have to be complete idiots to get rid of Souths, imagine the bad PR it would cause.
They already did.
Souths rented a crowd and now we have too many Sydney teams again.
They will die a natural death and Sydney City will have some juniors, so it will all work out in the end.

3 people are happy somewhere about it.

if the bears are a feeder club for melbourne now then how about a full j/v with the bears.

Melbourne Bears.

1) It should get old nth syd fans a chance to follow their team again when melbourne play away games in sydney and increasing their away crowds.

2) the step up to 1st grade will be easier if they have a proper premier league side competing in the sydney comp.

So what are those juniors who play in the jnr rugby league comps playing then?

When your a youngster don't you if playing a sport set your goal to play for your country?

This with other things could be used to attract and keep young talent in Melbourne and in years to come they could see a positive outcome.

Also are you game to say that not 1 player who has played for Australia in Rugby League actually played in the Vic junior comp at all?

It's Certainly an Excellent idea. Just as long as it doesn't wind up in Gosford!

I'd be EXTREMELY interested to see what television rights money, and advertising monies having a team in Melbourne opens up. I'd suggest its extremely worthwhile.

We should be expanding to and extending our hand to all 3 expansion bids, rather than trying to contract our game.

Stalin,a good part of the reason league has not been all that successful in melbourne, is that it is not given surport from the rest of the league community. why would the melbourne media and public have confidence in the storm even existing in a few years when there is this constant stream of undermining comming out of sydney to close them down. not to mention the lack of assistence from the NRL, who live in fear of some of the sydney clubs.
Should they be given salary cap consessions, of course they should. every player they sign has to relocate interstate. this incures costs and disruptions to families, so players signing with the storm would be looking for that bit extra. a player switching sydney clubs may not need to move house.
Do you think a rugby union team would have been a success there, i certainly do. why because it would have been given the full surport of the union community eleswhere .
If we beleive league to be the greatest game of all, why do so many fans beleive it can't expand when other sports can.
All the storm needs is alittle more time and alot more GOOD WILL.

The Storm have had their licence in Melbourne renewed until 2011,Victoria have got more development officers, they get amongst the biggest sponsorship in the league, they are getting into more schools, all this with little PR.
Sorry the Storm are in Melbourne for the long haul,in the 2nd biggest city/market in Oz.
The Swans had crowds of 6-8,000 on a regular basis in the early days with plenty of money being put in and promotion, and playing in a quality arena.
The Storm have now a former CEO of St Kilda on deck, who knows the market.
The Storm are staying end of story.

No Stalin....the right decision would be to have the Storm cheer squad beat the shit out of you (coz your a cat), then have you hung, drawn, quartered and decapitated on the halfway line of Olympic Park!
You are a tool! Why start a flame thread like this...its all the same shit! Personally I'd perform the exection myself!

Melbourne are a must in the competition and it is time people (especially Sydney ones) stopped making threads like this and started to support expansion in that market, and others like Adelaide and Perth.

The NRL tried but it has failed as AFL is too entrenched in Melbourne and basically a distant 4th in favourite football codes - AFL is overwhelmingly first then Football(soccer) then Rugby Union and a distant last is Rugby League with it's dwindling supporter base.

4th? Whilst soccer was being played before the change over to the new comp was announced in terms of crowds it was AFL clearly 1st, large gap then NRL 2nd, soccer 3rd and then a huge gap to RU in 4th.

How do you expand a competition by contraction of the areas playing the game in the NRL?

Why cut Melbourne when we are getting some juniors nearing NRL level?

Why cut Melbourne when junior numbers are increasing and two new teams will be playing in 2005 in the Melbourne Rugby League competition?

Why cut Melbourne when there are dickheads like Fitzy and Peanut Brain trying to undermine the NRL competition?

Another ridiculous anti melbourne thread

Any one agreeing with this stupid view should set up their own comp

they can attend all the matches

teams could include

Annandale
Glebe
Sydney Uni
