I was against it earlier in the season but changed my mind a couple of months ago.
Put it in perspective, he is a lot better than Ava. Jack Williams (the forward) will be the one to eventually take his spot, More So than Prior, IMO.

I would prefer prior at prop and just tackling everything that comes his way and leave the run metres to fifita, woodsy and taupau. Signing gal could mean we are no chance of taupau now and that's why he decided to play on. No forwards out there.

I hope his body can hold up as well as his attitude. Like Iggy Pop, he's a street walkin cheetah with a heart full of napalm, though Iggy's body has aged a lot more than Gal's.

Will be interesting what the QLD teams do to acknowledge Gallen in his last year next year.

The Broncos doing a guard of honour for Gallen as he walks off Suncorp Stadium at the end of the game would be too funny!!

BBB,He said it would be in his statement.

Also said he would spend a lot of time mentoring the younger forwards. Which is great I’m all for that. Hope Lewis can hang around to mentor the young players as well. He’s got a lot to offer.

Ahh apologies, I hadn't read his statement yet, just the SMH article.

Well as we all expected, Gal has confirmed he's playing on ... but I've got a nasty feeling this will backfire on us next year.

Wrong decision for the team IMO ... but I guess time will tell.

Wrong decision imo, really hope I’m wrong but I think we’ll see him slow down immensely next season.

Surely he’ll be playing 10 minutes either side of half time off the bench, there are young blokes that can do his job now.

Gals letter to members

To Sharks Members and Fans;

I was hoping to get this message to you first and to do that before making this announcement later tonight on the Footy Show but secrets are hard to keep from the media these days.
I said earlier in the week that I was close to making a decision on my playing future and after discussions with the Club and with our Coach Shane Flanagan I have made the call.

While we still have some big games to go in 2018 and finishing this season on a positive note is our main focus, hopefully with another Grand Final appearance, I can now confirm that I will be playing on in 2019.

Plenty of people quote my age and the fact that I was 37 earlier in the week, however the body feels good, training is still something I look forward to and the feedback from the coach and those that matter, say my contribution to the team on game day is strong.

I've always said age and my birth certificate would never make this decision for me if everything I've explained above was in order.

And personally, I believe I've got plenty left to give, which has ultimately led me to make this decision.
If I play 15 games or 25 games next year, while winning is the main aim, part of my role will also be to bring through and to help develop the next crop of talented young players at our Club, as I've tried to do in recent years and as I'll continue to do.

As for the terms and the contract, I'll sit down with the Club at the end of the year and sort out the details, but at this stage we're concentrating on the Cowboys first, then the big games we have coming up after that.

I can say that 2019 will be my last season, I now have an end date and with the talent we have here at the Sharks I am confident this year and next can be successful for myself and the Cronulla Club.

I don't get why people are so keen for him to go. Sure he's slowed down, and can still ball hog sometimes, but he's still better than the vast majority, and certainly better than any available replacement.
Get him on reduced terms, with less reliance on him thus allowing him to reduce minutes and maximise impact. Everyone's a winner.

Decision made. Time to get on with winning.

Gallen is a legend and I hope he goes out a winner playing good footy.

The coach needs to think carefully about his role. This team is still very reliant on Gal and others need to step up.

I have no problem with it.

He’s earned it. The good thing about being a middle forward is that you can get subbed off.

I would love to see him give the 13 to Williams from day one, and wear the 8 (or 15) for the whole year. Also give Wade the captaincy from day one...

His presence in and around the team both on and off the field is invaluable.

Good decision for the club, especially with Lewis going. I’m totally ok with it.
