Im glad that I have never really fully weighed in on this topic until now.
This week has been a rollercoaster of emotions in relation to the events surrounding Galvin. Here are my thoughts on the situation.
Initially, when I heard the news that Galvin knocked us back, I was a potent mixture of disappointed and angry. I was disappointed that we could not keep a junior with such obvious promise at this club. Im hearing a shitload of people saying words to the tune of "He ain't all that" and "Latu will be better than him". Those words come from understandable disappointment to be losing a player with his potential. This reaction never happened when we lost a player like Jock Madden for instance.
On the other hand, Im angry at the way this was handled by his management. They are well within their rights to knock our offer back. But, to not even look at the offer we put together smacks of disrespect. I could even accept that though. What I CANNOT accept is the disrespectful comments aimed towards the coach and flows down to his teammates. That is unacceptable from Galvin and the people that manipulate him to act that way.
You'll notice that I used the word "manipulate" in the previous sentence. I have heard Galvin speak twice.....one was a radio interview late last season and the other was part of being in a "Fletch and Hindy" skit tonight. What had really struck me in those two media spots is that although he is 18 or 19, his maturity levels are FAR below that. Don't confuse maturity with intelligence. In both of those media spots, he seems like an absolute kid, not a money hungry bastard.
He is an adult and should be responsible for his actions. But, I have absolutely no doubt in the world he is heavily manipulated by his manager to take the actions that he has done this week......and that is pretty irresponsible to put this guy through the absolute ringer by sports and social media this week. They absolutely had to have known his actions would have cause this reaction from the media and general public. A part of me feels sorry for the kid in that way....he does not have the maturity to comprehend the outcome from all of this....but unfortunately for him, he has bought a ticket to get into this circus, he will have to go through it.
Finally, our club has clearly grown off the paddock since Richo took over. Benji was an absolute star with the way he spoke today. I will be the first to admit that I had big question marks over him being the head coach of this club with no previous coaching experience. But, the way those players put in for him every week and the absolute humility with what he had to say today, he has basically won me over today. The Galvin thing could be the absolute making of Benji as a coach.
Our captains also spoke very well and Richo's strong tone is setting our club up for success. Yet, another strong day for our club.
