Game Day: First Semi vs Cows

Just got home, not feeling the best.
Two things:
WTF was with Hynes kicking game in gaining 10-20m with the midfield bombs????? was that f**king planned or just shyte kicking???? Honestly, they were diabolical.
How was that a sin bin, I dont mind if I am corrected here but at the ground it looked like Tracey was going for the ball, once again, please correct me as I have not seen the replay.
But Hynes f**king kicking ffs.

The game was always going to be about momentum swings and the taking of opportunites during those swings. The Sharks didn't do that. Those kicks were like a slow burn in terms of turning the pendulum back to the Cows. Each kick seemed to be taken from 5-10 metres further out than the last which gave them a better position on set starts. The Sharks were defending very well to keep the pendulum swinging slowly then came the killer minute where Dale made an error, Moyza gave away a 10 metre penalty and Tracey got himself binned. They then had the momentum squarely in their favour and of course, with only 12 on the park, the JT try came.

The thing about Hynes kicks are that he didn't seem to have "read the room". The Cows had the most trouble in attack coming off their line. Yes there was a gale but those kicks were not turning them around and in fact were bringing them onto the ball. Midfield bombs were a tactical faux pas.

However, they alone weren't reason enough to single Hynes out as he played quite well.

I see it more about missed chances and inability to capitalise and maintain pressure.

Hopefully we get a Sunday semi. One extra day recovery than the opposition who will belt the shit out of each other today. We'll be right in it as even though we played 90+ minutes the Rabbits and Roosters will cram 90 minutes into the first 20 minutes

I think Tracey is an nrl player

I don’t think Tracey is a winger as it’s a specialist position.

we lost tonight due to two errors that a specialist doesn’t do.

f**k.

He had an unhappy game for mine. I haven't read the pages after this one yet but don't see him being scapegoated at all. He gifted them a try to Tualagi being out of position and not trusting his centre. He didn't get his hands dirty. Zero tackles made. Metres OK but not effective. Although the kicking of the Cows excluded him I don't recall him going looking for hit ups to help out whereas JR, ST and RM were oftne in the middle doing their bit. He looked out of place.

Ikavalu is injured from the Jets game. We need Katoa to be fit for next week.

Yep. I love watching our defence live, tonight there was one glaring person moving up not in synch, it was Dale every time. I'm not saying he caused any problems, but the fact 'the wall' wasn't the same as what I have seen made me question as to why

He caused other problems. He made a bad handling error on the halfway line which gave them back the ball. Contact error. He bombed a try with another contact error. He only missed 2 tackles but 3 ineffective as well which were all from being out of the line. His first contact handling error worried me. It looked like he sacrificed the ball to brace for a hard landing to be honest. He was airborne.

He looked a bit old to me which was concerning. Was getting manhandled.

Lesson for Will Kennedy..
When you team has a player in the sin bin, FFS WALK IT BACK to the 20 after the opposition kicks it out in-goal, instead of running full tilt back.
Easy 30 seconds off the clock.
Might have been handy, that 30 seconds!!!!!
You just never know.

Massive opportunity lost. To score 30 points in semi final at home and lose is a poor result. Defence was not up to standard. Lacked the killer instinct to press the advantage when they had the momentum. At 12-6, had the momentum having absorbed their early energy then conceded 2 soft tries. The lack of urgency in stopping some of their tries was puzzling. The Dearden try was shambolic. He barely had a finger laid on him.

Bigger picture, hopefully this is a learning experience that despite all the effort they put in, a little extra is needed when it matters most.

Most were worried about error rates but they were pretty good.

Absolutely lacked killer and didn't take advantage of momentum. The Sharks had momentum for the first 10 minutes of the second half and every set ended with an insipid bomb. 3 by Hynes and one by Moyza. Hynes was involved in Deardon's try. Could have got him but went after Holmes instead. Perhaps he thought Brailey had him from the inside but Brailey's effort was poor.

Next weekend will be a great example of the mindset that Fitzy has built. Do we have a backbone or will turn to marshmallow like previous years since 16? We will soon find out.

you would like to think one of the other 11 players who were on the field at the time might have told him to slow down.. lacked a lot of match awareness last night. Finucane is clearly playing injured. Double the pain injections

A few have said that but it just as easily could have led to a break and another shift in the run of play to The Sharks. Also walking back lets them get a breather and set the defence making getting metres harder.

I think the general feeling is that a walk back uses time and perhaps prevents the JT try but what about we add in, for context, the fact that was over 5 minutes to go. The fact that the ensuing set saw the Cows get the ball back only 4-5 metres out from their own line and then add in the fact the defence went to sleep and let them come back to a spot where their next kick went out 3 metres from our line.

I don't think that play had any effect other than what it was probably meant to which would have been to bring us back on the front foot. Well it worked but we didn't back it up with enough urgency in defence. The D set after the Kennedy quick tap set was abominable.

Yeah, they were all signalling and telling him to slow it down, but training and instinct took over.
Oh well.

ahhh that makes it even worse. Far out.

I did see one of the trainers race over to him after he played the ball and have a go at him, presumably for that.

Well I haven’t given up.

Some of the fans on this forum might have given up.

But no way this team has given up.

No way they want to go out in straight sets.

Not with Fitzy running the show.

You could already see in the press conference Fitzy saying we’ll wash this off and onto next week. There is great spirit in this side, well coached and we are still pretty healthy.

Everyone saying how will we get up next week after a match like that. We’ll just think our next opponent will come from two teams bashing each other 2 weeks in a row and that has already taken a toll on them just after 1 encounter.

Got a feeling we’ll face Souffs. Results seem to reverse when two teams play each other in a very short time and Manu is a huge out for the Rorters.

For me we need Tolman back in the team to play some bigger minutes than what Fifita can offer. The Fifita sentiment should now end after last night to help us progress next week. I reckon Fitzy makes that call. We need some fresh legs to help our forwards recover from this game. Tolman can do that for us.

If we win we’ll we face the Panthers. A tougher matchup compared to what we would have had if we won last night but anything is possible. I mean if a side like the Eels can beat them twice in a season surely we have an opportunity to as well.

But one game at a time.

Don’t chuck your toys out of the pram just yet.

We'll see. If most of the grim reapers posting here have really given up they can phuque off and not post from here on in.

See ya next year death riders!

Just watching it again.

With the Tracey no try at halftime Sharks should actually have been given a penalty for the charge down of the FG attempt. Hess was the shooter but he did it from third marker.

Can you use a challenge to say the defence was offside?? Would nearly be 100% success rate if you could.

Bit harsh - last nights game was a heartbreaker. Been a few times I’ve walked out of the ground pretty annoyed, but last night was something on another level. Bewildered or jaded comes to mind
I can only beat describe the crowd leaving and walking to Cronulla, woolooware or Caringbah as the walking dead.
I would think most need a day to decompress and go again.

Interestingly, FoxSports gave him a rating of 4 and cited those very examples…
