They need to fix the backline but how it would have to be outside players are promote within.

Gagai would be a nice pickup to partner lafai but that would mean Dugan is more then likely gone.

McDonald is on the wrong side of the field and maybe give Mann a go at 1 and either give Herbert a go on the wing or sign an experience winger.

I realise Milne had an ordinary game, and he has had good games in the past, but overall he really isn't that great a player and hardly a must sign.

Same with Mann. Good utility and tried hard but not a player to break the bank for.

Was very impressed with Field, Packer and Vaughan.

All up not a bad performance against the premiers

The backline in all honesty is very average.
Your dead right mate...looked at the starting line up before the game and thought jeez very ordinary backline....even with 5 or 6 mins to go when we were deep in our half I thought we havnt got the backs to score full length tries.....and to be honest Aitken is in and out of FG mainly through injury and needs positional improvement, Milne and Mann are not regulars and the coach doesn't show much faith in them in set positions , McDonald has improved but is terrible in the air , Lafai has improved this year but still needs more work done to his game, Nightie is reliable but age is not on his side, McCrone has been ok when Widdop is calling the shots but terrible bloody kicker most times...having said that with Dugan, Hunt and Widdop hopefully the younger blokes will improve...BUT that will only happen if our coach shows some faith in them.

I am not even sure how they can fix the issue.

Herbert should be given ago at least to see if he can handle the step up the same as Dufty but Mary hasn't go the guts to make those decisions.

Nighty is to slow thats the simple fact
Aitken is really dumb at times
McDonald seems to do things at a snails pace
Milne looked out of place on the wing not totally his fault

So the jury is back.
Our backs need a lot of work.
Anyone have a list of off contract backs?

I love Duges, and I love him at either the back or centre. But if we can't snap him up at the right price, I really think centre is a higher priority.

To be honest I don't think they can fix the problem this year..think we just have to wing it so to speak until we get Hunts kicking game on board...having said that..seriously even with our inept backline we should have won that game

I don't think they can fix it at all especially the outlay of money spent in the halves.

Mary wants to play a power game that is all well and good until he meets a team that will just play around the slow backline ie the Eels and Storm and his bash and barge game looks childish.

Dufty has genuine pace yet has been over looked and honestly i can see him walking away
Herbert is no slouch and would offer alot more then Milne on the wing
Garrick is still young but hell the Raiders have thrown in Cotric

I don't agree...Had they not blown a few tries down our right side they would have won by more. The right side has been a problem all year yet the same problems continue.

The issue of poor defence lacking on the right hand side should be an obvious weakness to the coach.
This forum has been highlighting this for most of the season.
This needs to be fixed now because we are getting killed there week after week.
Someone posted that with a few minutes from the end we would need a length of the field try, bun we don't have anyone able to do that.

I think that's what my point was even with our inept backline and the the way the Sharks played we still should have won....at half time seriously we should have been in front by 20 not 2..in other words we still had plenty of ball but still couldn't graft out a win

Totally agree.

As a club, we have had the luxury of having star players in the backline over many years
.
Our current backline has no flair nor defence at present. They can't create any attack nor stop it. There in lies the problem.

Now that we had the night to stew over it, we can dust ourselves off and move on from last nights game.

The coach needs to show some nous.
