The Twitterverse full of criticism of Steve McNamara's choice of Rangi Chase over Widdop for England's encounter with Australia in the RLWC.

I watched the game with the sound off and relied on my own judgement. Widdop looked pretty good and Chase good for the first 15 minutes.

Interested to know the opinion of others in this place.

BMoz played superbly IMO. Best finisher in the game and made invaluable metres (or yards) out of danger.

Slater impressed no end, especially his reading of the game.

Widdop played well when he came on. The England forwards are just to bloody stupid to know that penalties will lose them a game of football. LMFAO

Rangi looked sharp early, but I think he's best used off the bench. Not much has changed since his days with us in that regard.

Widdop's boot impressed me. Put a downtown kick from his own 40 which rolled dead and then some. He wasn't able to showcase his long kicking game very often when in a Storm jersey

I thought Widdop looked the goods. The only question I have is will the coach ruin him?

Gareth looks like hes lost some muscle from hes frame and he doesn't look strong also not as sharp on his feet.
To be expected after his injury I suppose still has good skills great hands.
He definitely needs to have a strong preseason in the gym to regain some weight and strength.

Its good for us that he's not being overused. But not good for England.

Good all round then

I disagree I think the more football he plays the better missed a fair bit of game time this year needs to fully regain confidence timing and strength

England started fighting back when Widdop came on. If we let Widdop play his natural game of running and passing I can see it really switching up our attack. Put in a few nice kicks too. I thought Rangi was looking good for the first 20-30 mins but failed to keep the spark going.

observations from the match:

1. the refs getting sponsored by spec-savers... how appropriate :)

2. the poor state of the field given the stadium has a roof... could this have been a deliberate ploy to slow the pace of the game down and help England?

3. Rangi Chase did nothing - Widdop didnt have many opportunites but just seeing him playing is good news for the Dragons.

4. all in all a pretty average game - Aussies were obviously short of a run, with many players not playing for a while and no warm up match leading into the game...
i suspect next game on a dry track they will be a lot better.
