Well IF we see an example of it somewhere in the world then we can worry, but as it hasnt happened yet it is still a big hypothetical.

It could well go the other way, we are increasingly seeing digital streaming services buying into sports coverage including amazon forking out big for tennis and epl and Facebook offering over $1billion for Indian cricket. Interesting times ahead for sure.

You’re kidding right? The difference was when News Ltd came knocking they didn’t slam the door in their faces but welcomed them in without giving up their independence. If only we were that smart!

Afl is playing the long game doing something, we’re playing the long game by doing nothing lol. If this review provides anything more than a bit of second tier expansion and more rhetoric about new audiences not needing clubs I’ll be astounded.
So what did we pay Shane Richardson for again?

He is just one in a line of people who have produced reports on the future of the game that have been buried. Hence why I dont hold out much hope that the outcomes of this report will be much different. We love a report at nrlhq lol

Still can't get through ,it hasn't happened yet because the full effects of the new technology when fully taken up, hasn't happened .
Mate, Australia's market is chicken feed population wise compared to India,USA and Europe. So what happens there bears little relevance to here , a country of 25m the geographic size of the USA and concentrated in a few major cities.
Subscriptions here haven't risen, not keeping pace with population growth and still have a decent churning rate. There has been talk of staff cuts at Fox also. That's not hypothetical.

Not only Shane Richardson but about 4 other highly paid experts, who are not there now.

Yes. They were a waste of time. Consistent with maintaining a stagnant top flight competition. And keeping rugbyleague away from loftier heights.

They were paid to produce strategic directions , they produced them the commission largely ignored them. Not uncommon in big business. The first report on expansion options in recent time was done in 2012.

Richardson was but one of a few .His costs appeared to vastly outweigh his recommendations. If they were all so effective ,they'd still be there, especially as the code has more money since.
You are going back to 2012.LOL.
Beattie was the clown who paid extras to the clubs over and above their grants. That money could have been better used elsewhere.
You are also comparing big business ( aiming for profit free enterprise organisations),with sporting (non profit organisations) for the benefit of those within the code itself and indeed local communities.
The irony of all this ,as you live in the past, rugby league expanded in the early 80s and 90s without high paying consultants to make recommendations.l

Has there been any major sport anywhere in the world that has received a lessor media deal than the one before in the last three years? It’s a hypothetical with some anectdotal evidence but it remains a big IF when people are clutching at straws that somehow the afls extra content strategy is going to backfire on them.

Potentially in the future there will be more competition for sports rights with numerous streaming services looking for subscriber drivers than we currently have with the Foxtel monopoly on Paytv.

The English Premier League.

Offered more games to domestic broadcasters AND the media value was lower from previous deal.

What the NRL and AFL can't rely on, however, unlike the EPL, is significant growth of the international media deals. So while the EPL will come out ahead compared to its last deal, the value has gone backwards domestically.

Just as an FYI to everyone here, you'd be smoking some strong shit if you think a streaming platform is going to fork out the kind of money pay TV does anytime soon. Especially in Australia, a small market where subscriptions are already reaching their limit.

It's laughable that some here think streaming is going to send any league to new heights.

And that's the reality ,and I dare say one of the reasons ,the NRL is thinking of going into negotiations with the TV hobnobs early.
Streaming and others may well hit sub TV even further.
If we secure a small increase with an additional game (18 teams), we'll be doing well under present circumstances.

Yeah, it's probably wiser to start negotiations as early as possible.

As you've already said in this thread, everyone should be happy with a deal similar to the current one.

Looking at what Murdoch did in the UK, and considering how much Fox has overpaid for content here, it'd be mightily impressive to get a significant bump.

The good news for NRL, unlike auskick, is the opportunity for the two new teams, especially one that adds a new timeslot in Perth, is a good bargaining chip.

No question Fox will be the main player next time around for both NRL and auskick. And all the noise about Foxtel is that it's not in the greatest of shapes. The money will still be good, but I think they'll have the upper hand in the next negotiations.

I always thought that the VFL used the expansion card one round of negotiations too early. We got just as much of an increase without playing that card. Now when things are tightening up, we can pull it out and they don't have anything additional to offer.

They did but they got $78mill a year more from it (as well as other value adds) so by time we expand, if we expand, we have a long way to go to make up how far they have been ahead of us for a number of years. We might get up to where they are now in 2022 with expansion but we will be $400mill behind by that point. Still better late than never!

I do love the message these signings sends to kids....

"Wanna get a massive contract in RU or VFL? Become an RL juniors. Its that easy"

Except Ponga played Rugby as a youngster in NZ and Rah Rah as a teenager in Brisbane. Using your argument it pays to play RU as a kid to get a NRL contract. We are lucky we have more money to throw around and more Pro teams to attract talent. In NZ, SA and NH it is reversed.
