Geoff Carr has a cry about dual eligibility

Perhaps you need to brush up on your reading comprehension skills? The only player Carr is quoted as referring to in that article is Benji, and he says it is hard to deny that Benji is a Kiwi. So what are you getting worked up about? It is a fact that Beale is a born and raised Aussie who played for the Aus junior side. Next year he decides he wants to be a Kiwi. But you seem confused. What's Civoniceva or Tuquri got to do with it? As I understand they were raised in Aus from an early age. No problem with them playing for Aus. Much as you might hate to admit it, players such as Cayless, Pritchard, Webster, Beale would qualify as "plastic Aussies" (to borrow some Kiwi-fanboi-speak from Bobby DIGital).

Why?? He talks about what the impacts are to Australia but not what impact Australians are causing to other developing nations by piniching their top players....Tuquri played for Fiji first...Uate the same...the game is NEVER going to grow untill the big three nations stop looking after themselves....the top players from developing nations are always going to taken....hance why the game will never grow..

Awesome double standards. Australia(or NZ) stealing from smaller nations is the main reason we'll never have a truly international game.

I think everyone is getting in a huff about the article simply because it has come from Carrs mouth.

He says that there are issues with dual eligability and suggests that they might need tightening up. From the way I read it, he is not suggesting that Marshall and others should be playing for Oz but rather the jnr system needs to better reflect the senior system.

Get a grip people

pull the other one sunshine. What's this got to do with the developing nations? The players mentioned in that article are Aussies who are now playing for the Kiwis? Or are you claiming NZ is a developing nation now? And why mention Tuquri? He played for Fiji in the 2000 world cup. A lot of players turned out for teams for that tournament. Ricketson, Meli, Betham,Mason, Mann to name a few. Why produce a dishonest argument when it's obvious the real reason you're worked up about what Carr has said is because you don't want him to do anything about the Aussies who are defecting to NZ. As I said, Carr is right to be concerned about that trend.

:lol::lol: Geoff Carr!!! We have 15 teams in Australia. NZ and the pacific islanders are a huge resource. So should clubs not bring kids over at 15 unless they want to play for Aust?? Stupid fool.

Huh?? :? Carr is a chump...NRL clubs are over here signing up 15 year olds...they get pulled over to do schooling and play SG Ball and Under 20's then turn out for the Aussie School boys - which is fine....but when it comes to the Senior level the kids pick NZ for what ever reason...

How is it a dishonest argument about Tuquri?? I don’t understand?? Its a prime example about ARL pinching the top players from other nations....same as Uate....same as NZRL for Moi Moi then trying to get Ukama Ta'ai...then England with the Welsh twins....If all the three nations put their heads together and say lets start helping the other nations so we can improve our International Product....just think about how much potential money could be made for the games….even if it was to say the players that once you play an International match for another nation due to heritage, then you have no chance in representing your country of birth…for example..

The ARL, NZRL and RFL are so short sighted or blinded when it comes to eligibility....its always themselves before the game…..sure they put money in or send teams to play developing nations (or carry some nations)...but at the end of the day its the pilfering of developing nations top players that are killing the International game. I guess they have to look after themselves……but imagine if Aussie played Fiji in Fiji in a test and Fiji had Tuquri, Uate and Petro playing for Fiji…it would be massive…but no…if it did happen, all three would be in green and gold…it also comes down to the players but I would suggest a majority of the time it would come down to $$$$$.

The Rugby League World needs more players like Ukama Ta'ai…..

It is truly incredible that a man who has actively helped players switch from one country to another when it suits him and his country, then turns on players who go the other way.

Astonishing!

Whether Marshall is better than Locky or not isn't the question. At the time he pledged to NZ, he wouldn't have had a chance to challenge Locky or Thurston for a halves spot.

Benji has always been better than Thurston. So IMO he would of had more than a chance of challenging him for any halves spot. He completely outplayed him in the 05 GF. He was better than him before that game though, and he's better than him now.

This is always a difficult issue - especially when you're talking about those with parents born in other countries.

I emigrated to NZ in my thirties after marrying a kiwi. I now have three kids all NZ born.

I would LOVE them to represent England/UK if they were good enough.

They all have dual nationality - and my eldest boy has a flag of St George on his wall.

If they (hypothetically) had the choice to make I'd be proud of them either way - but I don't see why they should have to ply for NZ only given their genuine heritage.

Who is to make the judgement call on if a person feels they have a connection to a country through ancestry and culture?

Spot on!

Being a NZ born Samoan, I always find myself torn between the two countries. But I've always seen myself as a Samoan first, because that is whats in my blood. So I tend to support Samoa before I do NZ.

I now live in Aus and have two children born here. They are both told they are Australian. But in my experience its more than just where you were born or who you played footy for. Its up to the individual.

What are you blathering on about? We're talking about Aussie born and schooled players, not ones signed up by an NRL club.

No you don't understand. That's pretty obvious, and not too surprising I'm afraid to say. But then league supporters are generally not known for being a particularly bright bunch, and these forums do them no favours in dispelling such a notion. How is Tuquri a prime example of the ARL pinching top players? As has been pointed out on numerous occasions in here Tuquri played in the world cup because the rules allowed players to play for countries of heritage without it affecting their eligibility for their first choice country. Many others did the same in that tournament. That you continue to bring this up again points to you as being either dishonest or a dimwit. No offence intended, but there can be no other conclusion drawn.

That's all well and good, but what has that got to do with Carr expressing concern that Aussie born and raised players are defecting to NZ? I'd also just point out that you insult a great Aussie in Petero by implying that he might be only playing for Aus because of money. Your attempt to dress up Kiwi self interest as concern for developing nations is transparent, and laughable.

If us League supporters aren't too bright, what are you doing here dragging your superior intelligence down to our dim level, sheep?
