Under the NRL Judiciary Code, which is all the NRL could take any action on regarding the offence, there is no provision for a fine. This has been publicly stated by the NRL.
It was Ok for the NRL to change the rules regarding the shoulder charge only a few weeks ago. What stops them changing the rules around this?
The NRL charge a premium price for fans to attend games that supposedly offer premium content and yet you can barely go to a game nowadays where you don't see at least one or two players missing out through suspension. Usually these suspensions are for something ridiculous like a player bracing himself for contact and being pinged for a shoulder charge or in burgess' case, throwing a bottle on the field.
Sure... Burgess was a dickhead and should cop a punishment but by suspending him for something so innocuous, you are punishing the fans as well as the player and his club. Fine the bloke 10 grand and be done with it.
With how it is at the moment, no one is talking about the actual game. Another nothing incident and stupid decision has hijacked the headlines yet again.
Very poor precedent to set. Players should only ever be suspended for foul play.
