George Burgess facing 2 week ban for contrary conduct

The NBA. Players have thrown towels on the floor during the game trying to distract others taking free throws. A coach purposely spilled his drink on the court so that they would be forced to take a time out of which his team had none.

Field of play my ass. Kane Evans was off the field.

I'm not even a Souths fan. Just calling it how I see it. Soft.

No Kane Evans was still on the playing area. I suggest you look at what that is defined as in the Laws of the Game.

I didn't watch the game but from the pictures I've seen yes. We've seen players in the past squirt other players with water from off the field. Why weren't they suspended? Hell, they should of been rubbed out of the game.

I've not supported the whole 'the NRL has gone soft' notion that is getting louder and louder of late but f**k me it's hard to disagree with it these days. The game is being run into the ground.

Under the NRL Judiciary Code, which is all the NRL could take any action on regarding the offence, there is no provision for a fine. This has been publicly stated by the NRL.

It was Ok for the NRL to change the rules regarding the shoulder charge only a few weeks ago. What stops them changing the rules around this?

The NRL charge a premium price for fans to attend games that supposedly offer premium content and yet you can barely go to a game nowadays where you don't see at least one or two players missing out through suspension. Usually these suspensions are for something ridiculous like a player bracing himself for contact and being pinged for a shoulder charge or in burgess' case, throwing a bottle on the field.

Sure... Burgess was a dickhead and should cop a punishment but by suspending him for something so innocuous, you are punishing the fans as well as the player and his club. Fine the bloke 10 grand and be done with it.

With how it is at the moment, no one is talking about the actual game. Another nothing incident and stupid decision has hijacked the headlines yet again.

Very poor precedent to set. Players should only ever be suspended for foul play.

Then here is a novel idea...DON'T DO IT!

You are forgetting the main point, Burgess having priors is the reason he copped 2 weeks. Most people would have been content with a 1 week ban. It isn't the NRL's fault that George can't stop doing silly things and causing himself to have a poor record.

None of those a remotely relatable. As for the drink spilling that coach was fined 50k. Pretty big fine and that was just to get a free timeout.

As for throwing drinks the NBA had a huge brawl between fans and players after a drink was thrown at a player.

Pretty sure thats the deterrent to not throw shit at someone.

Punishing the fans makes about as much sense as most things the NRL is doing these days, besides no-one in the hierarchy wants a team to win back to back cups and they know no-one other than Souths supporters want it either.

A way around it like inaugurating a new level of fining players for such unusual behaviour could have been found if say a Doggie did it, I might have even agreed with Todd if he suggested it

There wouldn't be many other "professionally run" contact sports that suspends players like the NRL does for minor incidents.

The NFL had a total of 49 suspensions last season and majority were for off field incidents. I couldn't find the number of suspensions handed out by the NRL but I'll bet it was far greater than 49, this week 9 players are currently suspended and a few were luckily saved due to the inconsistent MRC.

The NRL govern on the run and are reactionary, they have no foresight or balls.
They have a fear of players suing them down the track which has resulted in this watered down version of the game run by an administration that's scared of its own shadow.

See, the thing is that the NRL have acknowledged that the rule is stupid. They've announced that they will review and probably change it anyway. So, why not be a bit proactive and conduct the review and make the changes now?

The NRL are shutting the gate once the horse has already bolted, yet again.

This is because the NFL realise that the value of it's game is the talent that plays it. People don't want to fork out hundreds of dollars for tickets to watch teams that are missing one / two / three star players.

By suspending players for nothing incidents you are weakening the talent pool on display and lowering the standard of the product on offer.

Besides that, the NRL have lost the opportunity to have this weeks media coverage showcasing the game's that will be played. Instead, the media have all been talking about how terrible this Burgess decision is.

When a dyed in the wool Manly man and renowned Souths hater like Paul Vautin says that this is the worst decision that he's seen in all his time involved with Rugby League and that the NRL should reverse it, then you have to start wondering whether he may just have a point.

The only people that feel it is a 'disgrace' is Souths fans. Funny that. Fact is George has a prior sheet the size of the Grand Canyon and if he was a cleanskin he'd almost be playing.

You don't throw anything from the bench, you just don't do it. It is a pretty simple concept, but if on the bench, you are not on the field, you don't need to throw things at blokes on the field!

LMAO at using the Footy Show as evidence....

I don't classify the Johns Brothers, Vautin, Wally Lewis or even Paul Gallen as Souths fans. All have come out publicly and said that this decision is a disgrace.

So we have everyone on the footy Show...good one, did Erin say it too.... Channel 9 will say anything to protect their product.

You keep forgetting that it was George's poor record that gave him 2 weeks. You keep forgetting that it was silly George who did the wrong thing.

You should be happy...burgess is in rubbish form, gives away 3-4 penalties a game and drops the ball 2 times a game. Be happy he isn't there!
