Yeah, 'minimal contact' is ridiculous. Someone (Leber, I think) said on the match thread- just say 'Hipgrave took Vuna out, but at that point Vuna has no chance of preventing the try being scored so we're going to rule a try' and everybody would say 'ok, that's not the way you're ruled all year, but it's the way you should have so we can cop it'
Yeah, and that would appease you and me...but it would open an outrageous can of worms that we're now refereeing differently than the rest of the year (as you say) and actually we in the Bunker are now just going to make decisions on the fly as we personally see it, disregarding the rule book. It would be a shit storm. Patten would be dropped, the referees would be copping all ways in the media, Greenberg would say 'we've got a problem (ie not him because it's negative, therefore the plural) etc.
As it stands it won't make a ripple.
So IF, and I believe a big if as like insert.pause said, Patten has a great history for f**king up in the Bunker, he did it on purpose to make sure it's a try then he's made the right call in how it was worded.
