I think there are some that just sprout sh*t to get a cheer (PINK, others of her mould), but there are quite a few who are very genuine in their political opinions (Bad Religion, Propagandhi etc etc)

Well hey, there are plenty of albums in my collection from artists who don't share the same political views as me. And it seems alot of bands are only anti-establishment if the establishment is republican/ liberal. But f**ked if I paid for a concert ticket to listen to them spitting out their regurgitated hand-me-down opinions, that's not what I came for. The same way that if I go to a church, I'll be screwed if I am going to listen to the pastor telling us why we should support Family First.

Fair enough, but if you're going to see an act that you know and like, and they 'sprout' political views on stage then I would say in 2009 with the interwebs theres a good chance you should know what to expect. I go to heaps of gigs, cant say I've ever seen someone go political on stage when I didnt expect it. Also seen plenty of shows were I walked away think it wasnt as political as I thought it would be.

Back to that Dee Dee Ramone comment.....someone better tell the clash they're not 'true punks'.......

Devin Townsend the other night was pretty f**king awesome.

I've seen him 4 times now - twice solo and twice with SYL - and this was easily his best.

Other great gigs - Sting, Baby Animals, Def Leppard, Opeth, Ozzy Osbourne and of course Immortal.

Lucky bugger. What did he play?

anyway, I thought I should answer

Best gig/band: Wilco, 1999 in the UK at the height of their power on the summerteeth tour

Worst gig/band: A glimps of Korn at a BDO

Best Festival: Big Day Out 1994 I think it was, urge overkill, bjork and heaps of other cool stuff.

Worst Festival: The BDO that had korn. I havent been back since

Most disappointing: The Kooks

Most intense crowd: Manic Street Preachers, V99 festival.

Best live performance: Ryan Adams, metro 2000

Worst live performance: as above, Korn

Most surprising: Kaiser Chiefs opening for foo fighters

Band I wish I was less trashed at: N/A

I knew them before they were famous: what a wanky question. I saw Powderfinger a few times before their first album came out.

Never understood the fuss:

Biggest dickhead: Tim Rogers, but I love him to death.

Paid for but missed: Probably a tie between Kayne West and Groove Armada. Miss them both for very different reasons

Guilty pleasure: Bon Jovi

Still undecided whether I like him/them: White Stripes

Band I wish I saw: whiskeytown

Individual I wish I saw: Elvis

Band I still want to see: the verve

Love them but boring live: the cure

I'm a big fan of The Clash myself. Keep in mind that The Ramones were a U.S band while The Clash were English. Definitions and characteristics varied a fair bit across the Atlantic eg. England didn't have the perceived Church/ State the U.S did.

Interesting...I saw them a few years back in Sydney and I loved them. Though I do love Smithy.

My only complaint, I suppose, is that they tended to play a lot of their newer, more experimental stuff.

Best gig/band: The Prodigy at Riverstage last year. Ridiculous

Worst gig/band: The Presets at Splendour. Yawn

Best Festival: Splendour in the Grass 2009. Not so much the lineup just the best I've been to

Worst Festival: Big Day Out 2010. Just pretty average all round

Most disappointing: Kasabian for sure. They are my favourite band and at Big Day Out this year the sound was terrible, completely ruined it, couldn't hear it at all.

Most intense crowd: Rage Against the Machine Big Day Out 2008. People going crazy everywhere.

Best live performance: I'd have to say Phoenix actually. Went to their concert at the start of the month and they just sounded so good live.

Best visuals: Chemical Brothers. Trippy.

Worst live performance: Bluejuice. I just hate them

Most surprising: Flaming Lips. Didn't really know many of their songs, but their show at Splendour was really really good. Also White Lies

Band I wish I was less trashed at: Bloc Party at Splendour

I knew them before they were famous: umm Simian Mobile Disco 2005? best I can do haha

Never understood the fuss: MGMT, pretty good songs but boring show

Biggest dickhead: Dizzee Rascal, Silverchair lead singer

Guilty pleasure: Calvin Harris, bit gay really

Still undecided whether I like them: Vampire Weekend

Band I wish I saw: Death from Above 1979

Band I still want to see: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kasabian (better sound), Late of the Pier

Love them but boring live: Muse, sounded perfect -- but you could just tell they were going through the motions.

Best gig: Probably Shihad with Gyroscope at ANU Bar a few years back. Both of them went ballistic, both are fantastically energetic live bands and it was like they had a bet on as to who could put on the best show. FTR Shihad just edged it, but that really only shows how good Gyroscope were. A close second would be a Butterfly Effect gig just after the release of Imago...Clint Boge was in amazing form and Dead Letter Circus and Repeat Offender opened perfectly, with good music and energy.

Worst gig/band: I've only ever left disappointed from a couple of gigs, and the worst was The Screaming Jets at the Hellenic Club. The energy was there, but the sound set up was atrocious and Dave Gleeson was off his best.

Best Festival: BDO some years ago....maybe 03? Anyway, Shihad, Foo Fighters, QOTSA, You Am I, COG, The Living End, and so forth...probably not the biggest names ever at a BDO but all the ones I like put on great shows.

Worst Festival: Haven't been to enough to see a bad one yet

Most disappointing: Birds of Tokyo in about 07-08. I love them, but Ian Kenny must have been sick or something because he had no power or presence

Most intense crowd: Shihad, ANU Bar again but earlier than the show with Gyro. Thrash circles, a brutal moshpit, just general mayhem. U came out bruised, it was amazing.

Best live performance: Karnivool. Hands down. Ian Kenny in full flight is probably the greatest force in music in this country, he was electrifying. The crowd hung on every word and every note, and Kenny held us there with his amazing vocals. COTE sent chills down my spine.

Worst live performance: Grand Fatal opening for After the Fall. I don't mind the band, but damn they were average. They played like drunks.

Most surprising: Fall Out Boy. A run of the mill pop band, but the are infectiously entertaining live and they have a great stage presence and sense of theatre

Band I wish I was less trashed at: Most of them

I knew them before they were famous: Kisschasy, After the Fall, Thirty Seconds to Mars...

Never understood the fuss: Silverchair

Biggest dickhead: Daniel Johns and his fake American accent

Paid for but missed: Zero Degrees and Falling. That was not only the band name but the temperature on the night. Decided against turning out.

Guilty pleasure: I have heaps! Fall Out Boy, Kisschasy, Funeral for a Friend...I would list The Whitlams but I legitimately rate them

Still undecided whether I like him/them: Kings of Leon

Band I wish I saw: Coheed and Cambria. Not that they've split, but Claudio's acid reflux is reportedly wreaking havoc on their shows so I;d have loved to have seen them before...

Individual I wish I saw: Weirdly, John Farnham in his prime. Powerful voice and a great showman

Band I still want to see: AFI. They might have gone to sh*t with their last two albums, but I'd still love to see them play stuff like Days of the Phoenix, Girls Not Grey, Silver and Cold, This Celluloid Dream etc,

Love them but boring live: None so far

Absolutely. And I guess you wouldn't have gone to see them live if you didn't like them.

I can see where you're coming from, though.

I saw The Butterfly Effect a few years ago. They played stuff from "Begins Here" and "IMAGO" and they blew my freaking mind.

Best gig/band: Best gig I ever saw would have to be Jim White and John Doe at the Corner last year. Throw the Currency in for good measure as well.... and The Suicide MAchnies at Next in 2005!

Worst gig/band: One Dollar Short at the Corner in 2003 when they played with the Julianna Theory.

Best Festival: Falls 2004- The Black Keys, The Living End, Billy Bragg, Veruca Salt, You Am I and heaps more.

Worst Festival: Any BDO since 2007

Most disappointing: Livid 2002. Some good stuff in there but could have been much better than it was!

Most intense crowd: there arfe some people who get a little too rowdy in Dropkick Murphys pits...

Best live performance: The aforementioned Jim White and John Doe. Kasey Chambers at the Prince of Wales in 2001, every single Flogging Molly show I have attended.

Worst live performance: Black Eyed Peas at 2004 BDO

Most surprising: Mars Volta the same year

Band I wish I was less trashed at: No Doubt @ Festival Hall in 2000. Wrote myself off big time but made amends 2 years later at the same venue.

I knew them before they were famous: The 5,6,78's... when Kill Bill came out there was all this bullsh*t about QT "discovering them". I'd heard of them years before he got his hands on them.

Never understood the fuss: Lily Allan

Biggest dickhead: De La Soul

Paid for but missed: I make a point of showing up at events I pay for!

Guilty pleasure: Missy Higgins and the Cat Empire- Falls 2004

Still undecided whether I like him/them: pass

Band I wish I saw: The Germs.... oh, and The Clash.

Individual I wish I saw: Hank Williams

Band I still want to see: Social Distortion, X, Hank Williams III

Love them but boring live: pass

Best Festival: toss up between warped tour 2002 (Pennywise, Vandals, Guttermouth, MXPX, NFG, All, heaps of good aussie bands) and Soundwave 2010 (Alexisonfire, Comeback Kid, A Day to Remember, Aquabats, AFI, Reel Big Fish etc.)

I have very fond memories of Warped in 1998. Shame it went to sh*t the following year but made a comeback in 02... pity I didn't go though!

all i will say is there is no pit like a new found glory pit... noone flailing about like they're having a fit, no hardcore wankers throwing punches, just a couple of thousand people having fun watching an awesome live band

gotta agree on the NFG mosh pit. I didn't go to the concert last weekend unfortunately due to a mates 21st, but I seen them at soundwave last year and the mosh was intense. I would definately say its the craziest i've been in but everyone was also friendly and helped people up who fell over etc. The band also sound so much better live as well...definately worth seeing IMO.

Best gig/band: Green Day - SCG 2005

Worst gig/band: haven't been to a gig that i've hated yet...ill go into it more with worst festival though

Best Festival: Big Day Out 2010. Everyone here is giving it heaps of crap but personally I loved the lineup and even though I missed a few of the acts I wanted to see, I have so many memories from that day. Good Vibrations 2010 also comes close.

Worst Festival: Field Day 2010. I suppose turning up groggy as sh*t from new years didn't help, but I was only looking forward to seeing the presets and that didn't turn out anywhere near as good as I was hoping for. I spend most of the day trying to keep myself awake and in the end I just wanted to leave before finishing time.

Most disappointing: Jimmy Eat World - Soundwave 2010. First of all my mate was smashed from the Paramore mosh pit earlier, therefore we ended up sitting down about 100m from the stage...and secondly the sound was rubbish from where we were sitting. Love them but didn't get into it at all due to this.

Most intense crowd: New Found Glory, Soundwave 2009. The crowd was going absolutely nuts. I've never been thrown around so much in a mosh pit...I was struggling to stay on my feet! Rise Against, Big Day Out 2010 was right up there as well.

Best live performance: Green Day. I can't really split 2005 and 2009. I liked both American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown as well as all the older albums. 2005 I preferred the venue and the scale of the concert, but they played for longer and had more variety in 2009. All in all the 2005 one was more of an event while 2009 had more variety to it...but they are well worth seeing live.

Worst live performance: David Guetta, Future 2010. Dunno if it was just because of how far back we were but we couldn't hear ANYTHING from where we were standing. Everyone was going WTF. Not to mention 95% of the crowd was at the one stage.

Most surprising: Bloodhound Gang, Soundwave 2009. I like these guys but didn't really expect too much when I seen them. I actually had to convince my friend to come and see them. They blew us both away it was a great set and they got the crowd right into it.

Band I wish I was less trashed at: Linkin Park, 2007. I was sick in the stomach all day and I got to the concert and really hurt to stand up in the mosh for 2 hours. I got into it but if i was feeling 100% it coulda been something else.

I knew them before they were famous: Kisschasy

Never understood the fuss: can't really think of anyone off the top of my head.

Biggest dickhead: Umm maybe Fatboy Slim at Good Vibrations, 2009 but then again I had left before then due to being waterlogged lol.

Paid for but missed: David Guetta...unless the 5 mins I stood there not being able to hear anything is counted...also missed Kisschasy at BDO, 2010 due to an idiot mate...

Guilty pleasure: Lady Gaga. I'd die to go to one of her concerts but none of my friends really like her enough to go pay and see her. I would love to though her music fascinates me. Not so sure about her antics but with her music its hard to deny her talent.

Still undecided whether I like him/them: Jet. And i've seen them 3 times live.

Band I wish I saw: Bon Jovi

Individual I wish I saw: Lady Gaga

Band I still want to see: Blink 182, 30 Seconds to Mars, The Killers

Love them but boring live: Jimmy Eat World, Soundwave 2010

Best gig/band: Nirvana. 1992 at The Palace in Melbourne

Worst gig/band: Haven't been too disappointed yet.

Best Festival: Livid 1994. Beastie Boys, Helmet, Frank Black, Buffalo Tom etc etc

Worst Festival: Livid 2002. I got dragged to see the Boringfinger...

Most disappointing: See above.

Most intense crowd: Agnostic Front at Crash and Burn in Brisbane. 1996.

Best live performance: ACDC 2010

Most surprising: Blink 182 in 1996. The dudes rocked.

Band I wish I was less trashed at: INXS at Melbourne Uni, 1993.

I knew them before they were famous: Skunkhour and The Herd.

Never understood the fuss: Oasis

Biggest dickhead: Liam from Oasis.

Guilty pleasure: I used to go to plenty of raves and lost my mind at Ultra Sonic in 2002.

Band I wish I saw: Metallica before they sucked

Individual I wish I saw: Jeff Buckley

Best gig/band: Metallica at Sydney BDO, forget which year. PLayed the old stuff and killed it.

Worst gig/band: Papa Roach, boring songs and boring on stage. Only appeal to teenagers.

Best Festival: Download 2009 in the UK. Slipknot, Faith No More, Trivium, Parkway Drive, Opeth, Hatebreed, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Static X, DevilDriver, Def Leppard to mention a few. Best festival ever, with the whole camping experience as well.

Worst Festival: Dunno, always take something good out of a festival

Most disappointing: Trivium supporting Machine Head, boring.

Most intense crowd: Pantera at the Hordern Pavillion 2001. Got so smashed in the crowd could hardly hear the music I was that squashed in the first song.

Best live performance: Slayer at the Hordern in 2002. Abosultely amazing

Most surprising: Hollywood Undead at Download 2009, had some good songs and sounded really good.

Band I wish I was less trashed at: Fear Factory at 2010 BDO.

I knew them before they were famous: Incubus and Limp Bizkit. Not personally but loved their first few ablums beofre they got big.

Never understood the fuss: You Am I and Eskimo Joe, can't stand them.

Biggest dickhead: Phil Anselmo from Pantera, ranted for 15 minutes and was so drunk he forgot the words to one of their songs. The singer from At the Drive In at the BDO 2001 too.

Paid for but missed: Shadows Fall when they supported Lamb of God this year.

Guilty pleasure: Lily Allen at 2010 BDO

Still undecided whether I like him/them: Pendulum

Band I wish I saw: Carcass, missed their reunion tour.

Individual I wish I saw: Kurt Cobain

Band I still want to see: Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Love them but boring live: Hmm, tough one. Tool for the lack of movement and Maynard being right at the back of the stage so you can only see his silouette

Best gig/band: The who- acer arena 2009. they still got it

Worst gig/band: The used... musically ok, but for a band that "love their fans" so much, they played 10 songs, and half of them were cut short

Best Festival: Soundwave 08. OFFSPRING!!!

Worst Festival: Soundwave 2010... good lineup, but only band that i felt really delivered (that i saw) was reel big fish, who were simply awesome

Most disappointing: taking back sunday at soundwave 2010...

Most intense crowd: lol. fall out boy. only because i got king hit and ended up with a concussion

Best live performance: taking back sunday- roundhouse... thats right, they get best, and most disapointing

Worst live performance: motion city soundtrack soundwave 2010... maybe it was the sun that ruined the day, but these guys were a shodow of themselves in 2008

Most surprising: cartel... best vocal performacne i think i've heard

Band I wish I was less trashed at: lol. fall out boy again. maybe the concussion wouldnt have seemed so bad if i hadn't shot gunned 5 jim beams moments before going in

I knew them before they were famous: Kisschasy

Never understood the fuss: can't really think of anyone off the top of my head.

Biggest dickhead: Janes addiction... the lead singer vocally molesting the crowd and dave navara jerking his guitar off

Paid for but missed: 0... however, my mate paid for and missed cold chisel, living end and grin spoon at the v8's, and gave me his ticket :D

Guilty pleasure: outkast

Still undecided whether I like him/them: fall of troy

Band I wish I saw: the beatles.

Individual I wish I saw: hendrix... my idol

Band I still want to see: chilis, relient k..... i've crossed most of the other bands off my list :)

Love them but boring live: .... pass

I went to the first one in Melbourne which was that year... there was a sprinkling of stuff that I really like such as Dropkick Murphys, Rocket From The Crypt, Strung Out, Unwritten Law, Trail Of Dead and a couple of suprises like Seafood.

2003 was pretty good as well.... had some epic side shows! The Roots and Jurassic 5 at The Place 4 days after was mind blowing!
