Just bumping this on the eve of the first test. If anyone struggles with the bat or ball this remarkable young talent has all the toys and can bat from 1-11.

Johnny Invalid take note.

Glenn Maxwell aims for Test berth

Glenn Maxwell aims for Test berth

By AAP, 12 Nov 2013

Globe-trotting allrounder Glenn Maxwell believes his best chance of a Test recall is in the middle order.

Maxwell is one of a handful of players to have turned out for Australia in all three forms in 2013, but concedes he’s highly unlikely to be named in the squad on Tuesday for the first Ashes Test against England.

“If there’s 11 guys out I’m probably more chance than if there’s none,” he said.

Not that the million-dollar man isn’t happy to be moving to the long-form game.

“I just had a nets session then and it was actually quite fun to leave a couple (of balls). I haven’t left a couple in the last six months,” he said.

Maxwell has had a season to remember, playing against Sri Lanka, West Indies and India in one-dayers, making his Test debut in India and crossing the world on Twenty20 duty.

That includes a stint for Surrey alongside and against English bowlers touring Australia this summer.

But he’s barely picked up a red ball since his Test debut against India in March, save an Australia A tour to Africa and last week against England in Hobart.

The pragmatic 25-year-old seems to know where he’s at with selector John Inverarity.

“I understand I’m going to be behind a lot of specialist batters and specialist spinners,” he said.

“I’ve got to really push for an allrounder spot, either a No.6 or a No.5.”

He concedes he will need more overs with the ball to prove his worth, but believes he can take wickets at international level.

“I haven’t had a lot of overs, it was nice to bowl 27 or 28 down in Hobart last week. So hopefully a few more games like this will help, hopefully a few more wickets as well,” he said.

“I feel like I’m bowling pretty well at the moment, and in Hobart, but didn’t have the assistance from the wicket which you generally get in Australia.”

His chance to impress is likely to come too late for the Brisbane Test when he lines up for Victoria in their Sheffield Shield match against table-topping Tasmania at Bellerive starting on Wednesday.

“I know I’m behind a few guys but hopefully results will change that,” Maxwell said.

Since he already has all the toys it's only fair he gets an Ashes berth for Christmas.

Odds of Warne & Brayshaw calling for his selection this Ashes?

Would relish him coming in playing some cross legged swat that goes straight up and plonks into the keepers gloves.

Wow Brayshaw was fapping to the Big Show real hard at the start of the match yesterday. Brayshaw asked The Show "what haven't you achieved" like as if he has achieved everything in cricket. And Big Show went on to list everything like test 5fer, odi 5fer, test hundred, odi hundred.

Just telling it as it is about the horrible shot to get himself out.

Said he had no measure of how to bat for the situation basically.

Moody went on to say you could understand if Maxwell was new to the side, but basically got up him for not being mature enough to play the situation. Said that Finch played maturely and gets it

Big show 200 off 100 balls game 5.

Moody to puplically apologise

He got ripped into on Ch 10 news tonight which I happened to be watching waiting for the BBL, Boof said along the same lines as Moody that he should know better, be more mature and steer Aus home in those sort of situations.

I love taking the piss out of a bighead who talks himself up as much as the next bloke, but to be fair Maxwell has done alright with his opportunities this series. Bowled well, batted OK (he's batting like a handy 7-8, not a proper batsman, but that's really all he is ...) and fielded well.

Glenn Maxwell cops it from Darren Lehmann for wild shot in Perth

Date
January 26, 2014

Chief cricket writer for The Age

Audacious all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has received a public roasting from coach Darren Lehmann for his wild shot and lack of match awareness during Australia's first defeat to England on Friday.

The Australians were 5-222 chasing 317 for victory at the WACA Ground when, in the 40th over, Maxwell charged all-rounder Ben Stokes, swung lustily and edged behind for 26. The home side folded for 259, handing the visitors their first win over Australia this summer.

Much has been made of the relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere under Lehmann but he can also deliver a fierce rebuke when it's warranted and Maxwell was left in no doubt about what the coach thought of his untimely exit on Friday. ''It got down to 95 off 11 or 12 [overs] and in this day and age you should get those,'' Lehmann said. ''Disappointing to lose 5-50 or whatever it was and fall short. So our blokes - and Maxwell - he's got to understand, we've got to play better cricket.''

In the second ODI in Brisbane, Maxwell was also guilty of squandering a chance to bat Australia into a winning position, when he heaved a catch to mid-wicket with the team needing seven an over from the last 15. Australia still won on account of James Faulkner's remarkable heist.

The nickname ''Big Show'' has stuck with Maxwell, and Lehmann obviously believes he can get an on-field response from the 25-year-old by criticising him publicly. ''That's why I'm saying it to you on TV,'' Lehmann said in front of cameras at Adelaide Airport.

''He understands he has got to be a better cricketer for us to get to where we want to get to. He's got the talent, but the way we want him to play, he's got to finish those games off for us. He's a great young kid and the thing is he realised his mistake from last night and he owned up to that. He's got to get better.

''He's batting in the top six so he is a batting all-rounder so he's got to show the responsibility to bat like that at six. We know he's got flair and excitement and we love that about him but we want him to understand the game better.''

Maxwell is expected to hold his place for the last ODI in Adelaide on Australia Day, for which captain Michael Clarke and all-rounder Shane Watson will return after being rested. Mitchell Johnson, who received his first punishment for the summer with 0-72 from 10 overs at the WACA Ground, will be spelled for the Sunday clash with England ahead of next week's departure for the Test tour of South Africa.

Brad Haddin will miss a second game to freshen up for the series against the Proteas.

Lehmann said the selectors' decision to rest Clarke, Watson and Haddin for the Perth game had no impact on the result.

''None. We didn't play very well. Full stop,'' Lehmann said.

''We had our opportunities in the game. We certainly didn't bowl very well early in the game. I think they were 0-73 off 10, so we've got to get some early wickets. We might have to make some changes there. We have certainly got to bat better.''
