Glymin: Bringing The Wow Factor

Thu 29th January, 07:00AM A A

By Nathan Davis
St George Illawarra Dragons winger Yaw Kiti Glymin is hoping to wow audiences at the upcoming NRL Auckland Nines tournament to be held at Eden Park, Auckland this weekend.
Glymin, who is in the midst of his second season with the first-grade squad, is jumping at the opportunity to wear the Red V during rugby league’s newest competition and test himself against some of the competition’s big names.
The local Arncliffe Scots admits he has spoken to several teammates about what to expect at the fast-tempo pre-season fixtures and hopes to do his part for the team.
“I am definitely excited. It’s going to be a good weekend with a lot of exciting football, and I was happy to be named and be a part of it,” said Glymin.
“The Nines is a stage for everyone to show their skill and athletic abilities. So I will be playing my best and hopefully grab that first grade spot.
“Last year’s boys told me that it’s a really different to any other football they had played. The game moves very fast and is played off the cuff, which is good for outside backs like me,” he said.
“Mary will probably change me between centre and wing, or wherever I am needed. It’s not as structured as normal footy, so the boys can slide in almost anywhere.
“I think Eto will be a crowd favourite. He played last year and he was up there as one of the top tryscorers. He will be really exciting to watch and play with and I can’t wait.”

Dragons winger Glymin aims to make impact

By MITCH JENNINGS

RUGBY LEAGUE

With two of the game's best wingers in front of him, Dragons flyer Yaw Kiti Glymin could've been forgiven for thinking his opportunity would never come.
The Arncliffe junior has played his entire career with the Dragons since first making the club's Harold Matthews squad at 16 and was a standout at under-20s level before joining the NRL squad last year.
But with Brett Morris and Jason Nightingale forming perhaps the best wing combination in the competition, Glymin was facing a long stint in the NSW Cup or looking elsewhere for a shot at the NRL.
That was before Morris' shock departure to the Bulldogs at the end of the 2014 season that's left a host of contenders vying for the right to partner Nightingale in the Dragons' back three this season. After signing a one-year extension to remain with the club this year, the 21-year-old knows he may only get one shot at that coveted left-wing spot.
"Having two internationals who are probably best two wingers in the game and the best in the world in their time ... learning off them back then was good for my game," Glymin said.
"Headspace-wise I didn't think about [playing first grade] too much but now that B-Moz is gone there's an opportunity for everyone to try and cement a spot there, so it's all open at the moment. Everyone's hopped in there on the wing for a bit trying it out and Mary's [coach Paul McGregor] probably getting a fair idea of what he's going to go with come round one and what he wants there.
"I've been training there and wing's my first choice position, so I just can't wait to see what happens throughout the year and I'd love to get first crack for sure. It'd a be a dream come true."
Peter Mata'utia, Charly Runciman, Dane Nielsen and new recruit Eto Nabuli are all options for McGregor for round one, with the Dragons' trial matches likely to decide who gets first shot on the left flank. It's seen some intense competition on the training paddock but Glymin said it hasn't fractured the developing bond in the new-look squad.
"It's definitely competitive but everyone's been good about it," he said.
"Everyone's got different skills and they're all different types of players, so even though there's competition we're learning off each other as well. There's a lot of competition but the boys are feeding off each other well."
Mata'utia, Nabuli and fellow young gun Euan Aitken have all been named alongside Glymin in the Dragons' Auckland Nines squad and will be looking to impress McGregor.
"It's an exciting game and a great game for outside backs, so I'm looking forward to it," Glymin said.

I've only seen him in a few Cutters games. Bit of speed and height. Seems pretty average but I think Bmoz and Nighty have spoiled other wingers for me.

He is going to have to be spectacular to even get a sniff of first grade. Was good in NYC but has been average at best with the Cutters.

i think if they thought he was ready for 1st grade they wouldnt have rushed out and signed Nabuli.

Baring injury, I cannot see him getting a game this year, England or union is his best option.

That being the case Brissy, who will play wing in your opinion.
Dugan FB
Flo wing
Centre Runciman / Farrell
Centre Neilson / ???
Wing ???

My tip for the rd1 backline would be:

1. The Dugan
2. Flo (the only 2 certainties)
3. Farrell
4. Neilson
5. Aitken (Mata'utia, Runciman)

I have a feeling this is the way Mary will sway just going off the media and the attention Aitken has been recieving. Personally, I think it would be great to see Aitken get a run. He has speed and strength and from reports is super fit.
