MEET the official rugby league Test team staying in a $27-a-night Sydney hostel. There are no five-star hotels, no lavish black-tie functions, no million-dollar contacts.

The Serbian Test side arrived in Sydney on Thursday on a budget tour, their passion for rugby league far outweighing the meagre money they earn.

Eight of the squad live in Serbia, most earning about $100 a week through security jobs. Others are students.

Unlike our NSW State of Origin stars, who set up camp inside the luxurious Pacific Bay Resort, Coffs Harbour, this team of battlers are bunkered down in the cheap VLA Hostel in Surry Hills.

Yes I agree Serbia are a bunch of battlers that have overcome many obstacles along the way.Rugby league was banned in Serbia at one stage.

So I really hope the can qualify for the World Cup later this year, they really deserve a chance to shine..

It's an uphill battle.

After winning European Championship B last year, Serbia is in Group A of the 2016 European qualifiers for the 2017 World Cup, which will be held across Australia, New Zealand and PNG. They face Wales (15 October, Cardiff City) and Italy (October 22, Belgrade). Only the group winner goes directly to the WC, while the second-placed team will face a play-off with the second-placed nation in Group B (comprising Ireland, Russia and Spain) for the final qualifying place.

Realistically they will have to beat Wales and Ireland.

They had a big crowd down at Cabra and even the Serbian high consul was invited to the game.

Definitely well publicized event as i believe there were atleast 2000 people there.

The coaching staff (consisting solely of Australians, volunteers) who gave their best to help the progress of Serbian rugby league. Without the support of the Consulate Republic of Serbia in Sydney, Serbian Orthodox Church, Serbian Festival in Sydney, Obilic Basketball Club, Cabramatta RLC, Philippines RLF, NRL, NSWRL,RLEF and RLIF, the tour would not be successful.


Exceptional share to many families and individuals, who gave an exceptional mark on the efforts that made this result. Therefore, all you big THANK YOU!
