There was a lot more to it than that. We were seeing 20 penalties per game and then Origin 1 came with 5 penalties in game 1 and 30 over the series. The crackdown didn't apply to the showpiece game. This lost the NRL credibility and ultimately led to the crackdown ending soon after, although it did appear to return in the latter rounds.
Penalties were reducing but your point about Origin is valid. It gave Gus and Joey even more ammo.
Then there was that stupid Sharks v Storm game where the refs decided to take the piss, and Goldbug choked.

Either way, Gus had a huge hand in the crackdown's demise and we should not be grateful.

What is it with Penrith and their delusion? The staff & fans (dunno about the players) think their club is going much better than the reality.

I saw Gus interviewed after the game last night and he was glowing in his appraisal of the club. Covering his arse? Maybe, but I think he truly believes the shit he dribbles. He was gloating about the youthfulness of the squad and local junior majority. Funny thing is their best player is not a local jnr, nor is Maloney? Tamou, Mansour etc. Their problem is most of their imports are duds and they let go of some quality juniors.

I guess you must enjoy 25 penalties a game then.

At least it was taking the rubbish out of the game. It’s funny that up to when the crackdown stopped the Roosters, Melbourne, Souths were all struggling as their illegal tactics weren’t being allowed.
I would prefer lots of penalties to the rubbish that they are getting away with now.

Yeah Gus he made it sound like they are in a re-building phase. That puff peice from 9 was pretty amusing. Making it look like Gus was a Riff' boy through and through. He did speed time at Newtown, Souths, Dogs, and Roosters with his bum chum Politis for 15 years.

After a few weeks it was less than that.
What I enjoyed was the rules being enforced, the shit being taken out of the play the ball and players actually being on side.
Look at the shambles we have this year and tell me how that's better?

Exactly.

The wrestle is ridiculous this year. It’s absolutely dominating the game

He was a Penrith junior, the youngest captain, coached the first premiership and spent the last 8 years as GM.
He is Penrith through and through!
He was a Parramatta junior (Wentworthville) who grew up in Greystanes and went for St. George.

Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George has today confirmed leading rugby league powerbroker Phil Gould’s appointment as a club-wide consultant.

George said Gould will provide advice and guidance in key strategic areas designed to build the Vodafone Warriors’ trans-Tasman commercial and general profile.

“This appointment is exceptionally significant and critical to the future of our business as a whole and equally to the game in general both in New Zealand and in Australia,” he said.

“Phil is held in the highest regard as a rugby league expert both on and off the park.

“He has an extensive and successful coaching history and is highly sought after in the media through his roles with Channel 9 and other organisations. He also achieved so much in rebuilding the Penrith Panthers to where they are right now.

“He’ll play a huge role in helping to take us to a new level as a club.”

George said Gould will work with the club on commercial and football opportunities as well as reviewing structures and pathways in the game with a view to bringing long-term benefits for the Vodafone Warriors and for the game generally in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

“There’s no question this is an exciting challenge,” said Gould.

“The owners Mark (Robinson) and Rob (Croot) and Cameron have a real passion for rugby league and they’re highly motivated to build the Vodafone Warriors into a powerful club over the coming years.

A strong Warriors club is a great asset to the NRL

Phil GouldNewly-appointed Vodafone Warriors consultant
“A strong Warriors club is a great asset to the NRL, not to mention its importance to the continued development of international rugby league, which I know is a priority for Peter V'Landys and the ARL Commission.”

After a 104-game first grade playing career, Gould coached the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Penrith Panthers to premiership titles as well as being coaching director at the Sydney Roosters when they beat the Vodafone Warriors in the 2002 NRL grand final final. He also coached New South Wales to three consecutive State of Origin series wins in 1992, 1993 and 1994 followed by a 3-0 whitewash in 1996. In a second stint with the Blues he guided them to two more triumphs as well as a drawn series in 2002-2004.

He took up a role as general manager with the Penrith Panthers from 2011-2019 when he drove the rebuilding of the club, which is currently leading this year’s NRL competition.

Gould was made a member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2014 for “significant service to rugby league football as an administrator, commentator, coach and player and to the community.”
