Gould leaving Penrith

We didn't.

It could have been Gus and Bennett.

I like Ivan. But he's not close to Bennett. Only coach you would definitely pick over Wayne is Bellamy.

I don't agree, I'm not a Bennett fan. I think he's results are tainted by being in a one team town with an unlimited cheque. (but that is a discussion for another day)

Gus's time was and is comming to an end. He did was his brief was (only thing missing was a trophy for NRL) The writing has been on the wall for tha past 2 years or so. Structures are now in place.

This is a damn shame. I really respect the way he handled the post Elliott years. Would have loved to see him on the stage with Wal holding the trophy aloft in the first weekend of October. Wasn't to be.

If there is a silver lining, it's that at least the coach and board will at least (notionally) be on the same page. It's all on Dave and his mate now.

It was always going to happen sooner rather than later.

Look at how Bennett is going this year with a ready made roster at Souths compared to Ivan, says it all really

I still don't agree. I saw first hand the mess he left at Newey. Anyways that's a chat for another day.
Tinkler was the main man responsible for the mess at Newcastle.

Bennett won multiple premierships at Broncos. Came along to the massively underachieving Dragons for instant success, went to Knights for a decent amount of success before Tinkler f**ked everything up again returning to Broncos and again being more successful than Hook.

Unlike Maguire I think Bellamy has proven himself at numerous clubs by being better than the guys before and after him. Instant improvement everywhere he goes. Cant argue with those results.

Another contract Gould couldn't fulfill.
Can't blame him for going with the mess Cleary & O'Neill have cocked up.
He now won't get to fire Ivan again.
I wonder if he returns in 2 years time when the wheels have fallen off?

I had similar thoughts. Perhaps we see Gould back here in a few years, assuming we still haven't won a premiership.

Nothing against Ivan Cleary I think he’s a talented coach who can turn our current form slump around.

However when O’Neill and these fools decided to go against the clubs football GM to decline Wayne Bennett’s offers they lost the greatest coach of all time AND Gus one of the most brilliant rugby league minds ever, all in one boneheaded decision to chase a coach getting a few wins at the tigers.

This will go down as the worst decision the club has ever made, alienating Gus the man who brought us back from the brink of collapse.

Huge thanks to Gus and everything that he’s done but now I just don’t have any faith in our clubs ability to make football decisions.

Beyond the shock of Gould's immediate departure (which I lament for the same reasons as many in this thread), this is another mid-season disruption that we did not need.

It also begs so many questions, such as: do we have another general manager of football lined up? If not, who is going to handle player contracts, retention, general administration of the football team? If not, who is going to do that work?

Did we sack Gould or has he decided to leave? If he has decided to leave, then some flack must fall upon him for the disruption mid-season. If the Board have decided to fire him, without addressing any of the issues in the previous paragraph, then that further proves in my mind that they are inept.
