Grade 1 Suspensions should be deferrable

I think we all accept that finals games, especially a Grand Final is worth more than just a normal Home & Away game so I don't think it ever sits well with the majority of league fans when someone misses out on a big game for a minor suspension.

I think we should allow for players to defer, at the least, Grade 1 suspensions for finals games and possibly even Grade 2 charges as well. Obviously these suspensions would kick in the following season.

Thoughts?

A brainless genius like O'Donnell takes someone's head off in 3 semi finals and the GF and wins the comp. Cops a cumuative 12 month ban - retires.

Here's a tip - Maria doesnt leadwith forearm/elbows.

You quite clearly missed the part where I said low grading charges, i.e grade 1... possibly grade 2.

and if JWH had not been suspended you would not have even thought of this.
Stupid idea.

BTW a stupid decision in regards to JWH as well, if they are consistent then sam squirrel the coward should have got 10-12 weeks for all the crap he does

I've actually held this opinion for while, long before JWH got suspended that's for sure.

I just thought now was a good time to bring it up given his suspension seems one of the main talking points in Rugby League circles. I certainly wouldn't change the rules this year but imo it's a discussion worth having.

That and I wanted to see if I could start a thread on here that would generate some genuine Rugby League discussion without it turning into an absolute abortion of a thread like 90% of the others on here.

I wouldn't mind a system where finals and Rep games were given different loadings, being suspended for these is surely a greater punishment than it is being suspended for regular season games. But not a deferral system, with players changing clubs , you could easily get the situation where one club get's an advantage, only for another club to pay for it next year.

Leave it how it is players do the wrong thing they need to be punished regardless of origin or finals footy.

I agree. I've thought previously that ya should need more points accrued to miss a final or State Of Origin.

i.e. 150 points for weeks 1 to 3 of the finals.
200 points for a grand final or SOO.

dont break the rules and you dont get suspended. pretty simple really. if your dumb enough to thrust your elbow/forearm into someones neck and chin, you deserve a week for stupidity.

I've thought the same thing. We use the points system already, just up them for certain games. That way, if it's a shitty charge players won't miss a big game and they can serve out their time at the next 100 point game.

Suspension is a suspension that should start immediately.
Besides , this should not have been a GRADE 1, it was a deliberate raised cocked elbow, that could have broken a jaw. It should have been at least a GRADE 2 and if it had caused injury would have been more. It was deliberate raising of the elbow into a defender.I saw this as worse than the shoulder charge that broke a jaw in the Knights game.

Actually showed NO class from Roosters to fight the charge and the NRL should have raised the grading charge on review.Grade 1 was a gift to Roosters to allow JWH to play at least one finals game.

No. If you have a clean judiciary record you won't serve a suspension for most grade 1 charges (intentional high tackle and a couple of others excepted). If JWH or any other player misses a finals match it is because they have been charged or suspended in the last 12 months or they have a lot of carryover points from a previous offence.

It wasn't deliberate. It was the start of a fend but McQueen(?) was on top of him quickly. Try doing a fend motion off to your side and look at how your arm moves and compare it to the contact JWH made. He deserves a suspension because he was careless but it wasn't deliberate

I think this idea has merit.

Maybe they should be able to defer more parts of the game.
Teams maybe should have 1 deferred penalty option per game.
Like... say your team gives away a stupid penalty on the 5th tackle right in front of the posts.
Just a penalty for holding down though...not foul play of course.
The team receiving the penalty needs to kick the penalty goal to win the game.
If you still have your 1 deferred option you say to the ref...
"Hey ref ....we'd like to exercise our 1 deferred option rule now please".
ref says into microphone (so the crowd can hear) something like... " Roosters have elected to defer this penalty to a later date. Penalty reversed...that was tackle 5 ...change over ...roosters ball".

Probably work when losing games as well.
Hey ref ..."we'd like to defer this loss to a game at another date"

It is brilliant.
