Grade 1 Suspensions should be deferrable

A suspension is a punishment for doing something illegal in a game, to stop a recurrence of that illegal act the NRL takes something important from the player I.e. the right to play games for a set period of time. There is no point in getting lenient on a repeat offender, it is their fault if they miss a finals match for doing something illegal.

How about we just get a bit of consistency in the rulings and not charge one player for something another player got no charge for or charge players who kick, slap or eye gouge other players?

That'd be preferred over anything else,,JWH though done a deliberate thug act and needed a stint on the sidelines,Les Boyd got how long for a similar act? 12months? Eye gouging is worse though

I still laugh @ SBW running 20 metres to put a shoulder charge on Beau and in the same week Snowden does the same thing and gets 7 weeks.

Snowden definately deserved a decent suspension(not that hefty though) however for a repeat offender to get away with it was a joke.

Suspensions should never be deffered, crazy idea.

Maria got off lightly.

This.

And this.

Snowden got 4 weeks plus another 3 due to loading and carryover points. 4 weeks was about right.

If they're going to up the points value of big games, trials need to be banned from counting towards suspensions. Otherwise a player can cop a ban in Round 26, play all the finals matches because they're worth more and then sit out a trial the following season and be sweet to play in Round 1.

It sucks that a minor offence can make a player miss a big game. But it's even worse that players can huge suspensions (like Graham did) and then have a few games knocked off before the season stars due to trials.

No "ifs", trials should be removed since most regular first graders barely play 20 minutes of a trail anyway and the result is meaningless.

A knock on in a regular game is a knock on in a big game. Should be the same for all rules and regulations.

No. If you have a clean judiciary record you won't serve a suspension for most grade 1 charges (intentional high tackle and a couple of others excepted). If JWH or any other player misses a finals match it is because they have been charged or suspended in the last 12 months or they have a lot of carryover points from a previous offence.

This is really the best point in this whole discussion. Don't do something recklessly boneheaded, don't miss games. Simple.

Idiot.

He said grade one fool.

Get someone to read it to you.
I dont care if it was a grade one high tackle or a grade 20 on-field genocide. If you start altering finals matches so acts of foul play are deemed less important, you allow more violence and foul play in finals matches.

It might be a finals game, but it's still the same f*cking comp you idiot. Why make it so that only finals participants get a shot at lenient rules?

I think this idea has merit.

Maybe they should be able to defer more parts of the game.
Teams maybe should have 1 deferred penalty option per game.
Like... say your team gives away a stupid penalty on the 5th tackle right in front of the posts.
Just a penalty for holding down though...not foul play of course.
The team receiving the penalty needs to kick the penalty goal to win the game.
If you still have your 1 deferred option you say to the ref...
"Hey ref ....we'd like to exercise our 1 deferred option rule now please".
ref says into microphone (so the crowd can hear) something like... " Roosters have elected to defer this penalty to a later date. Penalty reversed...that was tackle 5 ...change over ...roosters ball".

Probably work when losing games as well.
Hey ref ..."we'd like to defer this loss to a game at another date"

It is brilliant.
Great idea. In this case a deferred penalty can be used next game. Instead of a kickoff, you can start the next game with a penalty.

How about deferring points? The Knights are up 54-6 with a minute to play, Mullen pops a field goal to make it 55-6, and Bedurus advises the ref to defer 48 points. They then record a 7-6 win, and get a 48 point head start for whenever they play Melbourne!

Nah- if you do something that warrants suspension, it's you're own fault.

From memory I can only remember John Lomax missing the Grand Final through suspension in 1994 for the Canberra Raiders. And Jim Serdaris missing a Grand Final in 1997 for Manly. Ironically for Canberra, it worked out for the best as the guy who replaced Lomax, Paul Osborne ended up having a blinder.

I honestly think because Isaac Luke is such a pivotal player for South Sydney that people are crying out about this. If it was a scrubber that no one cared about- I doubt critics like (Peter Sterling) would be making the same noise.

I think we all accept that finals games, especially a Grand Final is worth more than just a normal Home & Away game so I don't think it ever sits well with the majority of league fans when someone misses out on a big game for a minor suspension.

I think we should allow for players to defer, at the least, Grade 1 suspensions for finals games and possibly even Grade 2 charges as well. Obviously these suspensions would kick in the following season.

Thoughts?

No.

In fact given the wider audience, I suggest penalties in big matches (Origin, tests, Finals) should be harsher.

I think there is merit of giving the player an option when a Grade 1 means missing ONE game.
Miss the next game , done.
Defer the suspension by 1 games, suspension is TWO games ( must be served in sequence).
Defer the suspension by up 4 games , suspension is Three games.
If the player does not play again before/after serving suspensions , then the club is up for $500k automatic penalty.

Above would allow player like Luke to play GF and serve 2 game suspension following year ,. or allow a player who was suspended as a result of round 26 game , to play all the finals , however miss three games of the new season.

As much as it pains me to say it, considering that Luke will probably miss a Grand Final because of this.... Every player goes in to a finals game knowing what is at stake. If the chance of missing a grand final doesn't give you incentive enough to pull your head in, then you deserve to miss the grand final if you do something stupid. Simple as that. People are correct when they say that a Grand Final is worth more than a regular game... Of course it is, but by this scenario, an act of foul play is worth more in a finals game than it is in a regular match as well.

If the game on Friday was a lot closer and Luke dumps SBW on his head and the injury changes the result, everyone would have been blowing up deluxe.

As much as I want to see Isaac in the Grand Final, he has been charged so he must go to the MRC. The penalty if he doesn't get off is one game. It should be thus regardless of the importance of the game that may be missed. If you start being more lenient for finals matches then you open a Pandora's box.

The referee's and the MRC struggle to police the laws of the game as they are without introducing a separate set of laws for finals.

If you get 2 yellow cards in the World Cup Finals you miss the Final. If you want to play behave yourself!
