Queen

I respect what the beatles did and like their music

but if someone handed me two cd's I'd put on the queen one - the best band doesn't have to be my favourite

But the question is who is the best band, not who do you prefer?

If you handed me a Queen album and a Beatles album, without knowing the reputations of either. If I then listened to both, I'd say Queen.

Beatles easily.

They influenced Western Culture.

Queen were ok, but over-rated judging by this poll.

They were clearly 2nd division.

The only other genuine 1st division competition as far as critical/commercial success and cultural influence are the Stones, Elvis and Dylan.

I think the Beatles are often treated as tall poppies and people enjoy deriding them just because they have been so successful and are so popular.

The cultural cornerstones for me are the Beatles (music), Star Wars (film) and The Simpsons (tv).

The general public only knows around 10-15 Queen songs, yet they probably know 60-70 Beatles songs. This is reflected in such things as Australian Idol having a Beatles night. I can't see them having a Queen night any time soon.

so we are judging whats good music by australian idol now???????

beatles have great songs and are a great band, but are just plain boring most of the time, and as for knowing 60-70 songs get stuffed, if you went up to the average joe on the streets they could probably name the same amount as queen songs, yeah they had plenty more songs but well known songs the numbers arnt too different

There's no way the general public would all know 60-70 Beatles songs. I doubt they'd even know 10 Queen songs either. Quite an exaggeration, though I agree that Beatles jingles/riffs/choruses etc. are more common knowledge than Queen ones. You're average Joe will probably know Bohemian Rapsody and We are the Champions/We Will Rock You.

Anyway who cares, Beatles won.

Led Zep should've....

It's a reflection of the fact that Idol's producers know the Beatles are very popular, and based on the fact that it was the highest rating Idol episode ever (over 3 million) my opinion is clearly validated.

What a load of tripe.

3. From Me to You
4. She Loves You
5. I Want to Hold Your Hand
6. All My Loving
7. Can't Buy Me Love
8. Hard Day's Night
9. And I Love Her
10. Eight Days a Week
11. I Feel Fine
12. Ticket to Ride
13. Yesterday

1. Help!
2. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
3. We Can Work It Out
4. Day Tripper
5. Drive My Car
6. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
7. Nowhere Man
8. Michelle
9. In My Life
10. Girl
11. Paperback Writer
12. Eleanor Rigby
13. Yellow Submarine

(26 songs)

1. Strawberry Fields Forever
2. Penny Lane
3. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
4. With a Little Help from My Friends
5. Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds
6. Day in the Life
7. All You Need Is Love
8. I Am the Walrus
9. Hello Goodbye
10. Fool on the Hill
11. Magical Mystery Tour
12. Lady Madonna
13. Hey Jude
14. Revolution

1. Back in the U.S.S.R.
2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
3. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
4. Get Back
5. Don't Let Me Down
6. Ballad of John and Yoko
7. Old Brown Shoe
8. Here Comes the Sun
9. Come Together

That’s abit over exaggerated don’t you think
The general public wouldn’t be able to name 50 songs from there favourite bands back catalogue

Well I just showed you a list of 54 and I'd put money on most people (aged 25 and up) having heard each of them at the very least.

I'm also certain that you could play another 10-20 of their songs and get the same result.

That adds up to 60-70 doesn't it?

Id put money on some people not most, you'd be surprised at the amount of people who cant remeber anything any earlier than 1990

still imo Queen were better, far greater and unqiue sound, Freddies vocals are legendary, yet i still think the beatles are great band

you'd find that also a reason why idol dont have a queen night is 1. No one on there could sing a queen song and 2. They probably wouldnt fit into idols style of things they are too focused on the pop side of things

50% of Australians aged 25 or over. I'd put money on it.

They were of a different era, so bands like The Beatles had already laid the groundwork for bands like Queen to build on.

"far greater"

That's a bit of a precious attitude towards their material. More than half the folks bombed on the Beatles night anyway, so what would it matter?

Queen ARE pop, mate.

A Queen idol night wouldn't rate compared to the Beatles. Simple as that.

Maybe if your over 35 years of age and that's a pretty big maybe.
I cant disagree that if you played 4 or 5 Beatles and Queen albums in a mall the general public would recognize The Beatles songs more so than Queens but to say the average Joe would of heard at least 50 to 70 Beatles songs at least once is absurd.

I like the beatles a lot - no way could i name more than 20 songs though (although I say the same thing for queen)

for the record though queen ARE harder to sing - freddie has a better voice than lennon did even though lennon was a vastly better songwriter

theres nothing insulting about saying that

Yeah thats why Bohemiam Rhapsody is widely regarded as the BEST song ever written, not bad for a POOP band
