20 premierships, blah, blah, blah.

they havent won one for exactly 40 years. a fan would have to be at least 50 years old to truly say they witnessed and appreciated a South Sydney premiership.

They would have to be in their mid-30s to say they witnessed and appreciated a win in any post season game.

Most clubs moved onto the business side of rugby league long before Souths ever did, who instead had some bloke run it like it was his own sentimental hobby horse. They seem to have got their act together now, and were heading the right way with assembling a decent playing roster too, until Crowe jizzed his pants when Inglis came onto the market and spent all that extra money on an unimportant position when they already had a cheaper one who fit the team appropriately. They lost the club's most important player in the most important role and it has set the team back several years.

.....
they have finished 9th & 10th with that most important player.
He may play well for the Eels. But he wasnt going to win them a trophy apart from the charity shield.

This may have just become the best thread on this site.

Just overtaking the previous 4 LOL@50uff$ threads.

LOL@50uff$ - again and again and again.

The thread wasn't meant to be a shot at Souths or any of the other 3 teams who haven't made the big one within the time that the NRL has been running. In saying that they do have 20 premierships and regardless of their last few decades that's a massive achievement in sport. If you ask anyone if they would rather have 20 premierships but not have played finals for awhile or if they would rather 0 premierships yet play finals footy regularly. I'm sure most would pick 20 premierships.
Uh... NO!
Maybe some senior citizens who witnessed some of those premierships would think that way, but I'm sure even them would prefer to see their club be competitive and play finals, instead of being the jesters of the NRL...

I still find it hilarious that the people who were calling Sandow the worst halfback in the league 6 months ago are now saying that he was our most important player.

If you look at the way teams play when influenced by Maguire, Sandow does not fit the bill. Sandow plays what is in front of him, he has so far proven he is unable to steer a team around with much direction.

I think he's a very talented player but he really isn't such a massive loss as everyone is making him out to be. He would not have worked well under Maguire's structure imo.

Oh yeah, and I'm pretty sure this time last year everyone was saying how Manly "has no halfback".. How did that turn out?

We wait for you to pull out 2 gun halves who will be internationals by OCTOBER 2012, given you based your squad around Sandow when you bought Taylor and Inglis as go-to men.

Yeah, because no other halfback would be able to play well with Inglis and Taylor... :sarcasm:

Just nutted out another interesting stats (not about Souths though)

2011 is the first year* since 1996 that the average points score per game didn't reach 40.

*1997 SL and ARL teams were combined to give a yearly total. In 1997 ARL comp, the Points per game was less than 2011 NRL, but when combined with the SL year, the average was higher for the combined codes than NRL 2011.

2011 - Avg Pts per game was 39.03.
Between 2006 and 2010 the avg pts per game ranged from 41.67 to 43.39.
From 2001 to 2005 the avg was between 46.88 and 48.86
From 1996 to 2000 the avg was between 38.09 and 42.15

we seem to have these 5 year fluctuations. 2011 could be the start of the next one, and if 2011 is indication, games are going to get closer and points scored per match will drop further over the next 4 years.

And Souffs finished where again?

Inglis needs Cronk or Thurston inside him. Ditto Taylor.

Sandow spent a season making chances for those two mongs and though "I wish I had Hayne outside me" ;-)

I've found the answer to Souths failures.

What they need to do, is get the comp down to less than 10 teams.

Souths have played 39 seasons (1908-1946) that have less than 10 teams competiting. They finished in the top 4 30 of those 39 seasons, picking up 11 premierships and finishing as runners-up in the final 6 times. They collected just 2 spoons (which were actually in the last two seasons where the number of teams in the comp was less than 10)

They have played in 63 seasons (1947-99, 2002-2011) where there have been 10 teams or more competing. The finished in the top half of the ladder 26 times of those 63 years, winning 9 titles and runners-up in the final 4 times. They also picked up 6 spoons.

From 1908-1946 Souths won 331, drew 15, lost 179 @ 63.05%
From 1947-2011 Souths won 619, drew 30, lost 697 @ 45.99%

Since their last Grand Final appearance in 1971
1972-2011 Souths won 339, drew 21, lost 516 @ 38.69%
