I doin't get this thread. Are you saying the 2001 Broncos were a massive flop - all that "talent", and a Cronulla result?

Any side with Chris Walker in it can only be considered sh*t. He'd play in a backline with Horder, Gasnier and Dally M - and they'd lose.

The last 25 years, ay? Well, 2008-25=1983

Have the 83 Eels, 83 Sea Eagles and 86 Dogs over any of them. Manlys side in 83 had 11 test players on the field - the only 2 who weren't was Phil Blake and Phil Sigsworth.

Chris f**king Walker :lol::lol:

Oh - best side I have seen - the only one to shade the Eels side with the greatest consecutive premierships in limited tackle football history - Roosters of 75. Check that side for talent.

That is a solid squad. Though to answer your question a lot of those blokes were very young and didn't hit their straps till years later. Parramatta's squad was just as impressive in '01, and i'm not going to ask why they didn't win...

Brett Hodgson
Luke Burt
Pat Richards
Eric Grothe (released midway through the season)
Scott Donald
Jason Moodie
David Vaealiki
Jamie Lyon
Michael Buettner
Jason Taylor
Daniel Wagon
Chad Robinson
Nathan Hindmarsh
Ian Hindmarsh
Andrew Ryan
David Solomona
Jason Cayless
Nathan Cayless
Alex Chan
Gary Larson
Michael Vella
Brad Drew
PJ Marsh
Daniel Irvine

and probably a couple of others I've forgotten. But as I said dont ask why we didn't win...

If anything that side overachieved massively. Buetner and Taylor are far from the best halves combination to have played the game. The Knights were a better side on paper that year anyway with the likes of Johns, Buderus, Tahu, Mcdougal, Gidley, Kennedy, Simpson etc.

The original team posted was certainly a good side of individuals and you'd have to put them up there in the top handful, but as a team together they were far from one of the greatest and just average really. They lost 11 games in the home and away season and 2 of their finals including the prelim so they lost almost as many games as they won. I guess there's truth in the old saying, a team of champions and all that......

As far as the overall squad went it was impressive. Far from the best starting 17 but the depth and combination of old heads and young talent was ideal. 17 of those 23 I named either played for their state or country. And I was comparing that squad with the Bronco's '01 squad as per the original post rather than the best of all time.

No they wont.

Steve Turner = average club winger
Jeff Lima = good club prop
Brett White = rep dud, decent club prop

if you think these guys are going to be remembered as greats of the game like Webcke and Renouf you are big big idiot.

Agreed!
Steve Turner....in the same breathe as Sailor or Hancock!!! ahahah
Jeff Lima.....in the same breathe as Webcke.....hahaha
Brett White....my god....does it get any softer than him when it comes to origin?
Captain Klutz...you are a funny one..

Steve Tuner....what a classic!

Personally the best team that I have seen in the modern era is the 1994 Canberra Raiders. But they didn't dominate like the Melbourne Storm like they have in the past 3 seasons.

The 1994 Canberra Raiders line-up is mouth-watering. The important positions are filled with superstars [Mullins, Daley, Stuart, Walters and Clyde] then you add immortal Mengina and Wiki, then you add the finishers in Nagas and Nadruku and THEN you have the workhorse pack of Pongia, Osborne, Croker and Furner. Unbelievable side!

01. Brett Mullins
02. Ken Nagas
03. Mal Mengina [c]
04. Ruben Wiki
05. Noa Nadruku
06. Laurie Daley
07. Ricky Stuart
08. Quentin Pongia
09. Steve Walters
10. Paul Osborne
11. Jason Croker
12. David Furner
13. Bradley Clyde

14. Brett Hetherington
15. David Westley

*won the Grand Final

Only 8 teams have won the Grand Final after dominating the regular season since 1990.

Only Manly [1995 - 1997] has finished Minor Premiers 3 season in a row but only wining 1 Grand Final while the Melbourne Storm are a good chance to finish their third season in a row as Minor Premiers and quite possible take out the 2008 Grand Final.

Melbourne Storm [2006 - 2008**]
2008 - 16W 6L @ 0.727 Ranked First Avg For: 23.9 Avg Agst: 11.9
2007 - 24W 3L @ 0.889 Premiers Avg For: 26.9 Avg Agst: 10.9
2006 - 22W 5L @ 0.815 defeated in Grand Final Avg For: 24.0 Avg Agst: 16.1
Total: 62W 14L @ 0.816

So to answer the question the Melbourne Storm line-up in the past 3 seasons is the most dominant of the modern era.

01. Billy Slater
02. Steve Turner
03. Matt Geyer/Matt King
04. Israel Folau/Greg Inglis
05. Anthony Quinn/Matt Geyer

Good post and thanks for the information. I don't think anyone is questioning Melbourne's dominance though. This thread though is cleary supposed to be about the best team on paper, yet a lot of people posting in it don't seem to understand that. That Raiders side would be ride up there.

Do the Raiders from 89-91. Also do the chooks from 02-04. Then do Eels 81-86.

Since when did the modern era start in 1990?

You mentioned earlier Loudstrat and you are spot on, the Easts sides of 74 and 75. Totally dominated the competition and star studded. Best club side Ive seen. Not many posters would have been old enought to have had the privlege of seeing them.

Fairfax, Schubert, Mullins, Brass, Harris, Peard, Mayes, Beetson, Coote, Walters, Reilly...........bloody brilliant, and coached by the Supercoach

19 wins from 22 in '74, 20 from 22 in '75 (those were regular season). Unbelievable. And they'd go on and become the first team to win the WCC
