Hello everyone,

I just want to make a quick unofficial announcement and let everyone know that the wheels are in motion in Greece.

We are currently assembling a squad of players in Athens, we train twice a week and currently have about 13 players. The goal is to have a squad of 20 by Easter. A few important things that I want to clarify:

1. We have absolutely nothing to do with the previous Greek Rugby League administration, who have all seemingly disappeared since 2006 (Greece vs Serbia). Many attempts have been made to contact people who were previously involved, but none have replied. So we're starting again from scratch. Based in Greece from day 1, not Sydney.
2. All current players except one (me!) are born and raised Greeks. There are many Aussie and British expats living in Greece, who are welcome to join us, but we are not targetting these people in our recruitment drives, we are targetting young Greeks. Most of our current players come from one of the major Athens universities.
3. We are 100% committed and aiming to establish a 4-team domestic competition in Greece. This is our highest priority and we are not even thinking beyond this goal for the time being.

Here is our 'makeshift' website where anyone who is interested can follow our progress:

Also, we have just recently joined the social networking sites, so anyone who uses these sites, your support is much appreciated, here are our details:

Thanks.

Nice work, is this anything to do with the Greek side that faced the Student Pioneers last year? Good luck either way, I hope you can get something up and running there.

The guys who played in that team come from two established RU teams based on the island of Rhodes. We have had contact with them. They may be open to the possibility of defecting once we and another team can get up and running.

Interesting to note that the majority of your current players are from one of the major Athens universities as the Dutch have decide to follow a similar route to the Lebanese and concentrate on the universities to get RL moving forward. Their logic is that most of the players won't have any RU baggage and the unis will already have decent facilities to use.

Did you get in contact with Terry Liberopoulos at RL Review, he was involved in the 2009 campaign, at least with the Sydney based team and also I know he was trying to do stuff in Athens... see what he is up to.

^ I may have contacted him at some point, I can't really remember for sure as I've contacted so many of them over the last 6 months. But thanks for the reminder, I just shot him an email now just in case, I hope to hear back from him.

dp: We have no affiliation with the universities, it's just that most of our players happen to be studying there. Then thanks to word of mouth, they bring more people from the uni and so on. I suppose it doesn't matter either way, as the universities in Greece don't have much in the 'facilities' dept anyway, but it's proving to be a great place for us to target when recruiting.

I know I read something about a rugby league match was played on Rhodes island (Greece) in the past 6 months?

Anyway hope to see your goals come to fruition. Your certainly doing it the right way from bottom up.

Here is a link to a Greek rugby league/rugby union news website (mainly rugby union). If you scroll down the list of articles, there are 2 articles here about these games in Rhodes that you talk about.

It might be a good idea for anyone trying to organise RL in Greece to keep the administators of this website informed, as they have a dedicated 'Rugby' section and seem to be happy to publish any RL news.

Howdy Lang, I know a Greek lad who I was communicating with through Youtube at one stage, into lifting so a big strong kid. Massive NRL fan(only been watching since he discovered the game on Youtube the other year mind).

Anyway he's in Florina, and I tried to find a League team for him at the time but had no look, so he settled on the Thessaloniki Rugby team, not sure how far he's travelling for that or whether he's still keeping up with it.

If you ever get to a stage where there's a team near there, or happen to have one planned, I'll drop him a message.

I'm sure that your attempt would be supported by Serbia. You should contact Jovan Vujosevic, Central Europe Director of RLEF, and Serbian RL Federation on ragbi@verat.net. I'm sure that we might send some development side to Athens, perhaps, like we did last year to Hungary. They were also beginners, but they played three more games v Serbian sides to date, the last one on last weekend.

I believe things getting better for the region. Good luck

Yes Serbia is close to you, who knows, maybe Macedonia can kick start something. There is a huge Macedonian community in Sydney. I think that James Stosic and his brother Sasa ara Macedonian.

There are already a few RU teams up in Macedonia and if all goes well in Athens, that would naturally be the next place we'd look at, Macedonia, speficially, it's largest city Thessaloniki...

Oh wait, were talking about FYROM?

A few ideas being thrown around for the official logo. These are my two personal favourites:

One thing I look for when I purchase rugby league merchandise is that the words Rugby League is actually part of the emblem as I hate it being abbreviated. You want the world to see that it is a Rugby League item you are wearing especially in an area where Rugby League is not widely known.

I prefer the bottom logo . I don't like the font used for the words "rugby league" in the top one. Maybe as Rob said use the full words rather than an abbreviation.
