I'll go further out on the limb. Within 12 months Bird is playing PL.And the forum is awash with, "Why did we sign him?" posts.

I'll match your limb and say the complete opposite.
Bird will be playing like a demon and the forum will be awash with "f**k I hate Bird but he is playing very well" posts

Why should we have let him go?!

Sure he can be a fugwit, but why waste 60+ games of NRL investment on a player, and then offload him just as he's finally coming good...... He's definitely looking better than our other "investment" ...waste of space that merkin is

Normal money, I think he may have got more somewhere else but shows he has loyalty to the club imo.

Good luck to him.

167k a year is about right I reckon. It's not overs when Souths and Canterbury were both interested.

The bloke is realising that potential most of us saw in him a few year sago.

Isn't the salary cap going up to 4 million for next year?

By my calculations that averages @ $160,000 per player based on a 25 man roster.

Considering the potential that he is now showing & his experience @ such a young age, $167K is cheap.

Another club may offer a $100K more than that - it happens.

I agree with Since73 on this one. But I hope we are wrong if we are spending the money. Greg must have a good agent.

Now that we've kept Bird, will the club throw less money at Thompson seeing as we have a young Reece Williams sitting on the bench?.
Hope Bird doesn't go lazy again now that he has been signed.

The money sounds about right to me. I mean, 50k more or 50k less he's still good value, but I wonder how much less he might have stayed for?

Where does all this "future captain" nonsense spring from.
Why not Simmons?
Simmo has played a hell of a lot more consecutive first grade games than Bird.
Simmo has had a lot less trouble at the judiciary than Bird.
Simmo has had a lot less off-field incidents than Bird.

None of the current crop would look up to Bird either.
So why so many comments about him being a future captain.

I'll throw around a couple of names that have respect and players are beginning to look up to.
Kingston. Douglas. And maybe even Kearney if he continues to develop.

I'm only have a stab at figures here, so please correct me those that know the real ones.
What were we paying Vags...$250 000
Covell................................$120 000
Bird's new contract..............$ 170 00

So Covell, vags and Bird go, and that gives us...
A total of $540 000 to throw at Jamie Lyon. Plus the chance to combine with Albert again. We could be a chance. And of course we wouldn't spend that much.

Scott to the wing.
Kelly, Caine or Pom to Centre with Lyon and we are well covered for Backrowers.

No this is not a bias against Bird. this is an opinion based on watching the bloke go around for the past 3 seasons and seeing him finally put in when contract time comes up.
He got what he wanted, now lets see if the form continues for the next 10 rounds.
I will be more than happy to be proven wrong.

This is simple.

Is Bird twice as good as he was when he last signed a contract.

Think carefully. He has improved for sure but is he TWICE as good?

I think not. Yet $167,000 is more than double what he is currently on.

Of course it's overs.

I'm pretty sure Vags was signed for $1mill over 4 years Since 73. That'd make it more like $330k a year. I also think he is getting one of the $50k "star" player payments this year. Noddy the other.

GM's don't plan in one year increments. To spend $540000 on one player he is going to have problems paying 2 others in the 25 in the years to follow.

Macca, I said "Of course we wouldn't spend that much."
But that is how much would be freed up roughly.

We need to keep evolving our squad.
Some fine recruitment last year with Ross, Thommo, kearney, albert and Kinga coming in at end of last season.

The blokes we had for the past 2 - 5 seasons were never going to win a comp, so let them go.
the team we have now..is it good enuff to win it?
If not, keep eveolving - adding to the guys we have been bringing in.
Why spend nearly $200 000 on a bloke who's been stuffing around fopr 3 seasons?

I missed that. I apologise. How much would you spend on Lyon?

On Bird, he's shown his value in his last 3 games. If he can maintain that form for the next 3 years then we are getting a bargain. Ofcourse that remains to be seen but I'll back him in.

Looks like a reasonable deal. Ask me again in three years and I'll tell you if it's worth it... but for the moment, I'm cautiously pleased with the signing.

Of course it's overs.

If it wasnt for the lengthy suspensions and off field antis he probably would have got more than 80k on his last contract.

When i compare bird to mapp, 170k is cheap.
