Greg Inglis announces retirement from rugby league

Do we have another ARLC/NRL policy that needs to be written down ?

Players retire at over 50-100 per year

Everyone wants some of them to remain in the game in some form or other

Be it coaching/trainor/mentor office job or social worker

Seems a bit crazy to say he can work for NRL Team B post retirement from a Team A NRL career but not for Team A or company associated with Team A ?

The job market is cut throat as it is

You seem pretty sensible Pommy (for a Souffs fan). You seriously think Inglis is foregoing over $1M?

I can only go on the facts as presented. They are he is due 1.5m in payments over next 18 months if he was to play and we are led to believe his salary will be 300k a year from Souths which means as the facts are presented he’s actually down more than a million in this period.
I understand people are doubting what is going on but the NRL audit these clubs and it would or should be found out if this isn’t what’s occurring.
If his mental health issues are as bad as reported I think it’s perfectly reasonable to assume he has decided 300k a year is more than enough to not put himself through it anymore. Plenty of other people find a rope just as appealing.

You need to realise that your basic argument is that because the NRL made the wrong call with Stewart and Matai, they should continue to make that wrong call for other clubs.

No, I think the NRL should change the rules for sure. Any contract signed after June 30 this year that is broken early due to retirement, should be voided from SCap calculations. All current contracts (and GIs), current rules apply.
Fair and gets the result!

So Greg if you retire now we will give you 300k pa over 5 years, just turn up at the club a couple of days a week say hi.

you're free to seek proper employment elsewhere, probably at NRL hq where they need a guy to talk to young guys about drinking and driving.

I know the NRL is run by a bunch of idiots but I cant believe they are so incompetent to not have a policy on this? Id have thought there was no contention, risk or anything in this decision. Player stops playing, stops being paid as a player, no longer on the cap. How hard can that be? I cant see any opportunity for a club to rort anything, end of day Souths are losing one of the games best players, they are no longer paying him, why would he be counted on the cap?

.

And? If his isnt contributing as a player what does it matter what role or salary the club employ him on post retirement? As long as he didnt take a lessor contract deal when playing due to a sweet guaranteed job post playing there is no issue here.

Do you really think GI wasn’t going to be inline for a nice cushy job like that at the end of his deal?
He would still be in a negative position to just retiring due to injury and keeping his salary.

Seems to be a fair few of these wrong calls that we have to suck up, whilst other clubs seemingly dont.

Stewart and Matai's contracts were both heavily back ended. This is what got Manly into the trouble that they are in. I'm sure that if they were being paid what they were actually worth while they were playing then the NRL would have let Manly out of the contracts they had when these guys could no longer play.

Don't need to tell me about it mate, I'm a Parra fan. We seem to cop plenty. Doesn't make it right to continue with those mistakes though...

To prevent the back ended contracts saga, if a players retires and has x years remaining. Determine the overall amount remaining above the average of the contract and split it onto the salary cap across x years.

It seems some clubs are better run and aren’t scared to take the NRL to task. If other clubs roll over because they’re lacking in decent leadership who’s fault is that?

Consistency is over-rated.

I don’t care what the description is half the ceos would be lucky to be on that type of coin.

It’s a rort , a way to pay out his contract.

Mate I work for a company that hasn’t made a profit in 12 years. The CEO made $800k last year.
