Panthers boss Phil Gould has hit out at ‘conspiracy theories’ Greg Inglis was tapped on the shoulder at South Sydney, also blasting those who have an issue with a potential salary cap exemption.
While the NRL is yet to confirm if Inglis’ reported $1.5 million contract will be wiped from South Sydney’s salary cap, commentary around the topic has varied from supportive to sceptical.
“I don’t care, I really don’t, and what does it matter? I know it’s a talking point for the media and they’re working out now how much South Sydney have got to spend and fans of other clubs will; be saying ‘oh, that’s unfair, they’re going to buy one of our good players’,” Gould said on his
Wide World of Sports podcast,
Six Tackles with Gus.
“Well, that’s South Sydney’s good fortune. They’ve paid this fellow good money for a number of years and he’s now unavailable.
“Why do we want Greg Inglis to play on if his heart and his body isn’t in it?
“Greg, by his own admission, is done; ‘I’ve had enough’. Therefore, he can’t contribute that $1.5 million worth they were going to spend on him.
“It’s a wise decision. I don’t know if South Sydney have given him a nudge or a push or what have you. That’s what people want to believe.
“I don’t particularly believe that. I think Greg has made a very intelligent decision.
“Everyone else should just butt out. Conspiracy theories, ‘they tried to free him up’, or, ‘they tried to do this’, or offered him incentive to go — I don’t care about any of it, I really don’t.”
The NRL has confirmed it has not made a decision on Inglis’ retirement package, but Gould believes Inglis has earned whatever the club is willing to offer him in retirement and the Rabbitohs should be entitled to salary cap relief.
However, the criticism centres not on whether Inglis deserves to earn a decent wage — rather whether his contract be exempt from the salary cap if he was deemed medically capable of playing on.
