Griffin's tactics are rubbish

I think the attack will come with time. With the talent we have and go forward we should have, once we get stability i think it will start to improve.

Defence should be the absolute focus in the off season. Whare and Martin coming into the side should do a lot for our edges. We shouldn't have any guys with glaringly weak techniques. Big job to improve the attitude and communication in defence though.

Do you think we would of won a few more games with Whare in the team? Having 2 test backs out. After releasing 400 games of experience is going to affect any side. We have a few pet moves in attack so that's a positive for going forward. Our right side is a problem which I think Whare fixes. Defence is not such an easy fix
Sure they would help. But look at the injury concerns the Storm have had in the centres and they have been unreal.

Cheyse Blair and Ryan Morgan would be on par with Will Smith at best. Atleast before this year. Yet with a decent coach they are looking like good players. Storm haven't skipped a beat whether it was their Origin centre, a second rower or Eels rejects in the centres.

It really hasnt mattered who we have had in our side. It has been weak defensively and probably the worst at defending the goal line in the comp. 3 passes from the scrum and there's space outside. Scoot from dummy half and there's space in the middle.

You don't think if we had Cronk, Smith, Bromwich and Harris we would be sitting up there? Simple we are a developing team you can't compare us to a very experienced side. Smith alone has played more tests and Origins then a handful of our guys have played FG games.

How are we compared to Knights, Manly and those teams with 1st year coaches?

He may have had some dodgy tactics at times, but last night he was spot on. Kick early and stop the Brisbane pack from getting the ball until late in the tackle count. I think Andrew Johns pointed out that due to the early kicking it was tackle 4 before the Brisbane pack were getting the ball. It completely neutralised their fast play the balls and McGuire and Thaiday looked stuffed having to keep running back to get onside.

The second tactic of bombing Corey Oates and kicking behind him, was another great tactic. Poor bloke will wake up shaking with pictures of Cleary launching balls in the air in his head. His confidence was shot after 20 minutes. I noticed that the Brisbane players went after Cleary to stop his kicks but to his credit, he just took the tackles and didn't flinch.

The third tactic of running attack through Milford's side also worked a treat. He struggled to stop us and we would have scored more past him if Blake could catch. At least Blake has started to spot gaps, now he just has to take his time and catch the frickin ball.

Yeah I'll give him credit for last night we actually looked well coached. Cleary's kicking game is something else, he already has an extra bit of power to his kicks than Sowie does, his bombs and long kicks are amazing when he gets them right which he is already doing most of the time.

I completely agree. That is precisely what we did and it exploited Brisbane to a tee. I think another thing that changed (although would not have been a tactic specifically for this game) is that Griffin had drilled into the team to go straight, and for Cartwright to run straight and not always be looking for a gap.

The running straight was the big change, it was really all we needed, that's why they have been so frustrating the last month or so. They earned the right to bring the backs into the game and provided Cleary with space to get his awesome on.

One swallow doth not a summer make.

It was a great performance last night , easily our best of the season but I'm not changing my opinion because of one game. Just like my opinion wasn't formed around one game.

Griffin's tactics are to be rubbish for 24 rounds just so we can turn it on against the unsuspecting Broncos. He doesn't care about premierships, just showing up Bennett and the Broncos twice a year.

I expect us to go left against the suspect Warriors defence exactly like we did last time. Every game we have tactics to match the opponent as any good side needs. Just needs to players to stick to it. Certainly are getting a few pet plays too. Signs are on the up I will judge where we are next year

If what the lurker says is to be believed its Melville and Brennans tactics that are rubbish
Maybe thats why there being shown the door

Here is the article in full.

The mastermind behind Panthers' game plan
Gus Gould has still got what it takes to coach in the NRL.

How do I know this?

Because it was Gus - and not coach Anthony Griffin - that came up with the Panthers’ game plan that proved Brisbane’s undoing in a major upset last weekend.

Penrith players have confirmed to me that Gus was the mastermind of the win, producing the game plan that brought the Broncos to their knees.

Griffin is a good man manager, but a coach whose strong point is not tactics - similar to Mal Meninga with Queensland and now Australia.

He normally relies on his support staff for the technical details on how to break down rival teams, but this week it was Gould - one of the great football minds of the modern era - who stepped up to the plate.

The Panthers will deny this happened - but it’s true.

Key point in Gould’s plan was the wrestle - to hold the Broncos down until the last possible second, slow down their play-the-balls - and frustrate them into error.

The Broncos don’t cope well when their play-the-ball is staggered - and that’s what happened the other night

While it cost Penrith a few penalties, it worked to perfection and is certain to be used as a blueprint by rival teams against the Broncos in coming weeks.

I can live with that.

16 point lead in Round 3... only to choke and lose.
19 point thumping this weekend.

Both losses would be hard to take. Especially as massive favorites in both games.

Well then Gould needs to explain appointing a coach who knows SFA about tactics.

Interestingly enough Gus blocked me on Twitter for criticising Griffin , wasn't rude at all just genuine criticism.

I dunno , something really feels off about our direction , seems like there's more crossing fingers than anything.

The author of this article appears to be suggesting that one or more Penrith players have told him/her that the team's tactics for this match (devised by Gould) were to hold down and concede penalties (which favoured us 8-5 although 2 of our penalties were mandatory for incorrect kickoffs and two more were for foul play that led to Bronco players being charged).

I call bullshit.
