Eric still has some minor deficiencies to work on in his game (namely trying to offload the ball when being driven backwards) but to be fair he's been a wonderful acquisition for our club this year. There were plenty of doubters when it was announced that we'd re-signed him but he's been our best outside back this year by a country mile and he's scored a try in each of our last 4 matches and going for 5 on the trot this weekend!

Well done Grothey!

Go Eric!

He does make errors. But if he can amend them with great runs and crucial plays,

WHO CARES?

Go Grothey, you bloody champion! :D

Yeah, I was one of the skeptics. After 5 mins at Ballina I was tucking into humble pie, and it tasted good.

Guru Jnr was one of the few praiseworthy things Brian Smith has done in recent times, but to him some praise must go. I'm actually a tad surprised that he didn't get a City jumper. His take of Dykes late cross field kick v the Cowpats was pure class.

Well done Guru Jnr

Well done Eric, keep it going strong and just hang onto the ball unless scoring a try:eek:

Couldn't have said it better myself.

That 70 metre try down the sideline vs Souths, I was just like "That's his old man".

Those in the know have commented that he is a totally different person and player to what he was those years ago, I can't think of any other reason why other than the profesionalism and influence from the Eastern suburbs management that have got him to where he is.

Yes, Grothe Jnr 2004 is much more mature then Grothe Jnr 1999-2000. As has been said we all (eventually) mature, while the Roosters may have helped a lot was just down to Eric getting his head together.

He is still prone to mistakes but there are a lot fewer then before his peformances are also more consistant

with his ball handling skills, or lack of, I'm surprised he isn't playing at 5/8.

I never saw Eric Snr play due to the fact I was only born in '87 lol, but my dad has a heap of old footy tapes & was showing me some of Parra from 1982...And man, there sure are definite similarities between Jnr & his dad.
I have always been a fan of Jnr, even in his younger days, and I was very happy to hear the news last season that he'd signed with Parra for 2004. He has massive potential, just really glad to see he's finally got his head together and is starting to live up to that potential. Go Eric!

You're right about the similarities. The way they both fend off and bulldoze defenders, its freaky.

Eric Grothe snr was the greatest winger you will ever see. Who would ever forget that try v Canterbury, from a tap he just tore through the forwards and scored. Grothe was unstoppable. Young Eric is a reflection of the old man, but with the hair and beard, and that low running action coming toward an opposition winger at 100mph - awesome.

I remember a scene from the 1982 GF. Greame Eadie puts in a towering clearing kick. Lazy old Guru trots back, finds that he isn't going to make it, so he puts on the speed, reaches out with ONE hand, and takes the ball on the full. keeping speed, he wheels around, and ploughs back through the Manly forwards, before being tackles roughly where Eadie had kicked from. I think 3 rucks later, Ronny Hilditch dives over. Try and premiership Parramatta.

The one thing I am yet to se of Guru Jnr is the blistering diagonal run to cut down to the opposition winger on the far side in a try saver. They supreme moments in Rugby League - moments of pure genius. They reckon Guru would never let anyone clock him at top speed. No one ever knew how fast he was.

Aahh, the memories!

I remmember a game where he (EG Snr) took the ball from the kick off, beat about 12 players (some twice) ran the full lenght of the field down the left hand touch line and scored.

Did it all on his own.

A very memorable try. I forget who the opposition was.

Didn't see a lot of Eric Snr (well I can only remember back to 1986 but I know I "saw" a lot more then that)

but 1 ERic Jnr memory I have that not a lot of people saw was in reggies about a week or two before he made his 1st grade debut

At Parramatta Stadium v Sharks in Reggies
Sharks kick off Grothe catches the ball runs down the Eastern touchline no one lays a hand on him puts it down next to the posts.

Sharks kickoff

Grothe gets the ball from the kickoff runs down the Eastern Touchline no one lays a hand on him puts the ball down under the posts

Sharks kick off and make sure the ball goes to the other side of the field
